- “My beliefs are more important than anything. If I have to give up basketball, I will.”
During the 1995-96 season, Denver Nuggets player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf refused to stand during the National Anthem as a form of peaceful political protest. As a result, he lost his career. Abdul-Rauf speaks about his experience and how Islam and his conviction kept him motivated and steadfast, despite the backlash. Check out his new documentary released on Showtime called, "Stand".

He was a great player who played through a life long illness he was born with. He was a great player, but even a better man. For the sake of Allah. He didn't care about being attacked by his peers, employer, government, civilians. He lost millions of dollars that he could've made for the sake of Allah. He got black balled. He knew through Allah comes justice and ease. May Allah guide us all. Look how happy he is internally. I went through depression and called out to Allah and started doing dikr. Remembrance of Allah and studying about the trials and tribulations the Prophets went through. And especially the stories of Prophet Muhammad may peace and blessing be upon him. My depression started going away. And with patience Allah opened up doors for me that I didn't even knew existed. Put your trust in Allah.
SubhanAllah thanks for sharing , great reminder
Allahu Akbar.
Alhamdulillah
Masha allah, I had my anxiety slowly disappear after making a habit to ponder on the prophets' trial and tribulation too😊 alhamdulillah. It isn't easy. But nothing is impossible for Allah.
Indeed. I watched his TV prog ''stand'' really deep in his faith Mashaa Allah.
I am white and belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon) and when I was younger I didn't understand why he was doing what he was doing. But as time has gone on and I have gained much respect for his courage in his beliefs. To stand up for what you believe (especially in that environment) is truly inspirational. Cheers!
@LMNM800 Thank you though I do believe in Jesus Christ and is the literal son of God. His sacrifice allows all of us (regardless of religion) to return to live with God. xoxoxo
Saw “Chris Jackson” score 55 points as LSU beat Florida…and as a huge fan of Ali and as a Vietnam veteran…thank you sir for your stand and your sacrifices off the court - I salute you and all that stand for justices that need recognition!!
After 500 years and thousands of miles away, sometimes African-Americans make our way home. Thank you for sharing your story my brother.
400 years to the very first ship. 1619.
What a great humanitarian,he was Steph curry before Steph..May Allah bless him and grant him the highest path in janna with his family
MaShaAllah!!!!! An inspiration for us all in Ethiopia 🇪🇹 🇪🇹. May Allah (s.w) protect you.
This brother was Steph Curry before there was a Steph Curry!
May Allah azzawajal elevate his rank and give him glad tidings, ameen! ❤
Mashallah sheikh Omar I love brother Chris Jackson Mahmoud Abdul Rauf . He stood up against injustice and sacrificed everything for Islam and Allah swt. May Allah continue to bless both of you inshallah.
Great Shooter...I saw him as a Freshman at LSU to the NBA. When you become conscious of your humanity, money in the NBA is meaningless. I was the driver to Ali and James Baldwin in DC when they were honored by the same people who refused to respect them. It was a great feeling to be in the company of Ali for seven days. I named my son, Malcolm as a way to honor the great Man, Malcolm X. There was another Brother who played in Denver in the 70`s, Warren Jabali who was forced out the NBA because he was a supporter of the Black Panthers when he played in Oakland for the Oaks in the ABA. Rick Barry talked about him all the time.
He looks fantastic for 53 mashallah.
No don’t say was 😮our brother still is awesome in our own

Man has some solid jokes but we gut people who need that bread 🙂
''FREEDOM IS A ROAD SELDOM TRAVELED BY THE MULTITUDE'' !!!!!!!.... i'll take quality over quantity anytime . I grew up with Muslims AND Christians in my families but my single mother never forced Islam on myself (youngest of siblings ) ... but i'm just a man whom appreciates the deeds of MAN '.....Blessings Brotha' Mahnoud
Alhamdulillah. Allah guide you to the right way
Do many Muslims truly believe in God alone, and able to walk faithfully with Him alone. This is the Islam of Abrahamic Monotheism, not the Islam of Hadith of Abu Huraira et al.
MashAllah!!

Asalam alaykum Imam Omar Suleiman, I wanted to ask you... how do we know allah subhana wa tallah is happy with us or unhappy with us
If you feel close to Him and continue to seek to please Him thru your worship and good manners with His creation means that Allah is pleased with you.
Thanks alot Umm Sarah, but what I mean is that is there a way to see if Allah SWT is happy with us... Like in a visible way?

You must be different kind of Muslim because you are talking about love and caring instead blowing buildings up.
Just 1 question... is applause permissible in Islam?
Yes, in the past there used to be less applause. Recently, there’s more and it’s being allowed more. The scholars continue to analyze and re-analyze issues in our modern lives in the light of our deen. Applause is something that is cultural rather than a part of the belief of non-Muslims so that’s why it is acceptable for Muslims to engage in. Allah knows best.
Women clap men don't they say allahu akbar
He hardly “ risked it all “ .. He got a net worth of $5 million .. He made sure he made his money before he became all courageous .. Look up Muhammad Ali’s story .. He refused to be drafted to protest the Vietnam War .. He was stripped of his title and banned from fighting professionally .. It wasn’t certain if he would ever be able to fight again yet he stood by his beliefs .. That’s a profile in courage ..
Why must there always be an opiniated dumbo who feels the need to speak in matters he is totally uninformed about. You haven't and you couldn't walk a block in his shoes. You haven't and you couldn't bite the bullet, or face the hail of mean spirited and hypocritical bullets that he confronted in his personal and professional life. But here you are, with an opinion. An opinion aimed at downsizing a man's spirit and achievement, and worse of all an opinion aimed at creating division through comparison. Ali was Ali sir, he did what he did, he deserved all the love that he got, and still gets. This doesn't diminish brother Abdur Rauf. He endured what he endured, and came out triomphant. You and your ilks CANNOT AND WILL NOT diminish him, nor his story.
Jesus Christ is the only Lord and Savior.
I enjoyed watching Chris Jackson play basketball for LSU and the Nuggets.
why is he dressed like he is going to a nightclub?
