As a Zero FX owner, you covered both pros and cons very well. Other Zero reviews I've seen contain a few incorrect statements and you seem to always do your homework best. Maybe could have put more emphasis on the bike always being charged in the morning, but I was really glad to see you reviewing a Zero. Maybe a video in the future on SR with Power Tank?
Thanks! Means a lot coming from an owner. I would love to have a go on the SR... personally I'd take the Charge Tank though. We have a ton of Level 2 chargers around here so I could see that being seriously practical. ~RF9
I’ve demoed an SR, and it was a blast. If I’m not mistaken, the 2018 DSR is VERY close to the SR in terms of range and power, but with a bit more suspension. LOVED the video, BTW!
Trevor, what are your thoughts on the relative silence of an electric bike? They're really interesting, and the price is fairly high, but not excessively crazy, I think. Just a little concerned about the lack of "awareness creation" lacking most of the noise that a regular bike produces, even the quiet ones. I'd probably get a small air horn as the first upgrade. :)
@@toki002 good point, but even if it only helps in limited cases, it can still help you getting noticed. Proper situational awareness is key on a bike, of course.
I legit love that you captured one of the most amazing things about electric motorcycles: Silence. I love hearing my engine roar on every turn in my sports bike, but the silent experience when riding electric is just unmatched.
I like the video, nice idea to make it look old fashion like that. However the burnout is cool but the high pitched sound of the bike reminds me my old drill :D
Incredible content and well crafted videos, presented in a way that just makes me want to keep tuning in! F9 just did it again, well done Ryan and Aneesh Shivanekar!
I think that's the case. I built an electric motorcycle recently and by the time we had to get it on the road for testing and filming, a new rule came on the restrictions of modified motorcycles which even lead to the Motor Vehicle Department breaking into College automotive fests and seizing bikes. It was the time of the elections too. We wanted to wait for things to clear up because if they are in a mood to get us, months of our work and money will be in jeopardy. But since we were getting close to the deadline, we did not have a choice. But even after riding more than 80 km on various days, the authorities never noticed it even with its sparkling blue and white paint job. So yeah, I think that sound is a significant factor for them to get you pulled over.
Great video, amazing ability to keep people watching without any dialogue! Please add a follow-on with your read of this bikes abilities off-road. With your dirt bike background and access to trails, I was definitely hoping for more pithy commentary and what works and what doesn't. Having a silent review is cinematic genius, it also isn't as informative as it could be to help people like me considering a purchase of the FX. Keep up the great work, and add an update on the FX offroad!
I still don`t understand how this guy does it. This is the best quality youtube channel, and he seems to be putting litte efforts to it aswell. F9 is amazing. Probadly has a IQ of 300 or something :P
Bruno Mikan Yeah, they have a team behind videos but usually that usually means repeatably soulless or even straight shitty content. (E.G. Buzzfeed.) Not to mention this is a motorcycle gear retailer's YT channel. I wouldn't say RevZilla makes low-quality content. Although a lot of them seem more like advertisements rather than a legitimately in-depth and informative review. But that comes from a company beholden to its suppliers. F9 has personality, style, substance, and fucking QUALITY for every video. And they care more about making an honest review than pushing a supplier's crap.
THE CAMERA WORK!! THE AUDIO QUALITY! Dude this is just, beyond National Geographic level. How are you not on TV yet? Oh right, because TV is obsolete now. xD
What an inspiration man, first 30 seconds i was like when will this montage end and then i soon realised this is not your regular bike review. Literally no words to describe this ❤️
I have a 2017 Zero DSR, and have enjoyed it for a little over a year. Essentially a model up from what was reviewed. (Just means longer range and a little more power/top speed). This review is pretty accurate. I use the bike for my work commute, and love it. Never any hassle, always a 'full tank' in the morning. And the quiet ride is really nice. I can go to In-n-Out at midnight and not wake the neighbors :D Some owners have gone for the charger upgrades that allow you to charge rather quickly using car charging stations. (less than 2 hours, some even 45 minutes or so, depending on if you plug into more than one car station!) which allows them to go for longer rides/road trips. Its POSSIBLE, but no where near the convenience of a gas bike. Having said that, this is definitely something you can see being 'the future' as soon as charging infrastructure gets built everywhere. Having said that, plugging it into a normal wall socket really does make it a super convenient and cheap commuter bike to operate. The up front cost is a bitch though.
I get this bike if all your doing are short commutes, it's nothing new they have had electric automobiles for over 120 years. They were marketed to women as a alternative to steam vehicles. My biggest complaint is the battery, it may last 5 years or it may not and they take too long to charge for the way I ride. Plus at this point in time it would be greener to keep your gas bike then buy one of these as the damage caused from not only making the batteries but disposing of them. When they come up with a different source of viable energy to run the electric I may think about it.
@@gctdonyre hopefully graphene in batteries gets adopted. It should help with longevity, capacity, and over all performance of li-ion batteries. Video of Samsung work into possible graphene batteries: ua-cam.com/video/Go2g_BNpG_Y/v-deo.html
How is you look pulling out a cord at night and plugging it in, then unplugging and wrapping it up in the morning an easier "full tank in the morning" than me sticking the nozzle in my tank for literally 18 seconds? I appreciate that you like the bike, and it's cool. But I don't think it's a huge convenience thing over a fueled bike.
As always, an imaginative, informative, and extremely well produced video. Really great job. As to your observations and conclusions, I'd say that you were strong on left-brain facts but a bit light on the right-brain delights that riding a Zero FX provides. To me, it feels otherworldly to whack the throttle (rheostat) at 20 MPH and then fight to keep the front wheel down for 200 yards -- all silent. That silent-green sea of torque makes this bike special. The rest is just numbers.
dude!!! Im after buying a Harley so watched a couple of your very informative reviews. Ive now spent the last 2 hours watching a lot of your other vids!!! Im hooked! Its great to have a reviewer talk our language. Awesome.
I get the practicality in urban settings, but I need a bike to commute 55 miles each way on motorway to get me to work. Electric tech still can't give me that without some serious range anxiety. But hey, big step in the right direction!
Luis Martinez you misunderstood, he needs the bike to go 110 miles per charge (he said 55 each way). And on a motorway, so has to do it fast. That looks like a fail to me, so far. Doubtless the tech will catch up one day, but it’s got a long way to go from here (pun somewhat intended). Les in UK
@@Llyander Most workplaces have electricity. If you can plug in at work, the bike will be full before you head home. No more having to stop on the way home for fuel, no more having to warm the bike before you ride home. No more paying for petrol and maintenance. It's like having a working week that's half an hour shorter but getting paid more. Try asking. My work was reluctant at first but it fitted with their green goals.
Your creativity, blackboard teaching & humor keep me waiting in suspense for the next video. My favorite subscription, love the channel & every video so far. Thnx aye 😉
In the meantime, my CB500F can do over 300 miles to a tank at a decent cruising speed (60-70mph) and refills in just a couple of minutes. When an electric 'bike gets even close to that, I'll be interested. Maybe 5-10 years from now?
At the moment electric bikes make no sense at all unless you ride short distances to work 20 to 30 miles tops and recharge overnight. The cost of the things is also prohibitive in the UK they are about £14,000 with the rebate for something that wouldn't compete with a 250 scooter performance wise. You also have to factor in replacing the battery as these have a life and degrade with use & I suspect how it is used and temperature it is used in. Untill the range goes up to 400/500 miles & the cost comes down to near parity with and equivalent ordinary motorcycle I will not be buying one.
@Waxel Punkt. That would be my solution too. The main difficulty would be standardising for size, shape and access, as they'd be too heavy for people to lift easily and swapping them would need to be mechanised.
Exactly my problem. EVs will always suck in the range department. Sure, you can stop and charge it, but that gets boring after a while. Really, they should try to market this to civilian hunters.
So your channel gets a lot of attention from your North America neighborhood ( USA 🇺🇸 and Mexico 🇲🇽 ). You are on point with the pros and cons. Even someone who commutes 30 miles in Phoenix might come across issues with over heating/ thermal since it is over 80 degrees F majority of the time. Perhaps it needs better cooling options available for the regions that get more ☀️ and less ❄️ ?
Try 2-5 years from now, technology is expanding at an exponential rate. 10 years from now every car company will have a relatively affordable, all electric, self driving car. I’m sure they’ll have motorcycles that can go pretty far haha
This is Zero's SHORT range bike. If you get the 14.4Kw DS/DSR you can EASILY travel over 115 miles per charge and quick re-charge to 80% in an hour. I've managed to do a 370 mile day trip in Northern Michigan with ease on my 13Kw (2016) Zero DS. I'd encourage you to compare the 14.4Kw DS with factory quick charging next time. Oh and the "Taxpayers money" part... Don't forget the billion's of dollars that go to oil companies every year in America... For the past 100+ years. That always seems easily forgotten ;)
You have to factor in 20% power loss and therefore range over the lifetime of the battery pack and reduced battery performance in winter with lower temperatures. Plus if your travel on freeways / motorways the range falls off at those speeds. I don't think I could reliably do a 75 mile daily commute over 5 years but I may be wrong. ( I can't charge at work)
@@stevebolton8471 There's several guys on the ZERO forum that have 4+ year old Zero's with over 70,000 miles and no noticeable battery degradation. I just rode my Zero today 35 mile's in Michigan's crisp 39 degree morning. I maybe lost 2% more charge then I would on a 70~80 degree day. I can regularly get 90 miles without trying, on the expressway even in cold weather. If I stay easy on the throttle I can get near 120 miles.
Anthony Helmholdt wow, that’s good to know. What speed are you doing constantly. I rode a BMW C Evolution and the range dropped like a stone as soon as I hit 50mph on a motorway (that was speed restricted). After 45 miles I had 40% battery left and luckily was allowed to recharge at the hotel I was eating lunch at. Loved no gears though so I ended up with a DCT Honda for just over 50% of the price of an electric bike and I get 84mpg average over 5k miles.
@@stevebolton8471 To achieve 110+ miles I need to keep my Zero DS at about 65 mph average. This is fine for most Michigan backroads and state highways. If I need expressway I usually keep it under 80mph and can still get 90ish miles per charge. PS, I push the range of this bike often because my in-laws have a cottage exactly 100 miles expressway, or 93 miles on state highways/backroads. I have to stop and charge for about 40 mins if I take the expressway. If I take backroads (less-traffic, curvy, and more fun anyway) I can go the whole way without stopping and arrive with about 10~15% left depending on outside temperature and my speeds.

Thought I was gonna only watch a minute or two but watched the whole thing. Probably the only UA-cam video beyond the length of a music video I’ve watched entirely and enjoyed. Great film work and editing
After riding a couple. Yes. You can't rev when someone comes into your lane, you can't make yourself known. Horns don't have nearly the same effect as a rev, people ignore them too often. These are unsafe, the range is terrible when riding hard, overpriced junk.
Loud pipes dont save many lives... Have you noticed loud bikes are loud AFTER the bike has passed? From behind the bike? Im sure some cager has been startled out of somnambulism by a loud pipe but wont save ya from granny making a left ahead of ya.
So I've watched your videos before and loved all of them. The quality is top notch, and is a breath of fresh air. I can tell you put a lot of thought into each video and that you want each video to stand out from the last. 10/10
This was a joy to watch, just shows how most people with expensive camera gear waste their money when what they really needed is some lessons in how to film and tell a story properly. You have set a new standard and now I don't feel like watching a regular review with someone blabbing anymore.
It's deceptive. From motor to wheel, there is one torque multiplier. In a petrol bike, from crankshaft to rear wheel there are 3 torque multipliers. Motor torque cannot be compared to engine crank torque, because the final result at the wheel is where it counts. Plus e-bikes won't allow full power right off the line. I once calculated the torque at the wheel on an MT-07 in 1st gear, when engine has reached torque peak. It's many hundreds.
In the same way, gasoline engines provide instant torque. If not, they would be shut down and nothing moving inside. All of these modern statements, most of them ridiculous. Another? "It corners like it's on rails!" Except train rails are usually very straight with very gentle corners where a relatively low speed train moves. "Instant torque!" yes, just like a gas powered bike when the clutch is released. Torque is a rotational force. Nothing would even be felt if a gas bike didn't have instant torque when the clutch was released. "Pulls like a freight train!" which usually is a very slow, arduous process without much speed.
Lifted_Above that’s just it. A clutch, no matter how aggressive still causes a delay. No clutch, no delay. No need to spool up the engine to optimal revs or downshift to do the same. The electric motor pulls .. at any speed. Then there are the physics of gasoline engines, 4 strokes, 3 of which produce no power ...
Yes, because I'm so incensed that there should be a 1/4 second delay in clutch release to ruin my whole day riding a motorcycle. I mean, the whole noise it makes, engine spooling, transmission shifting, mental game of optimal power for a given condition is just too much to take. Why were these things even invented? Bow down and worship the battery powered god?
this man just made a motorcycle review without saying a word, bravo!

Is it not ironic that a "futuristic" electric motorcycle doesn't have standard LED headlights 🤣🤣🤣🤣
crylicstar thats what throws off rubber neckers in their v6 camrys and dodge rams .. ha
You'd be surprised how many states/countries regulations don't really allow for them...
Yeah, WTF!
I fitted a LED myself on my zero ds . It was as hard as changing a bulb. But they surely should have LED from factory
Omg. Seriously.
Yes, I do love my Zero DSR.
Yes, it does have limitations...
that's why I have more than one motorbike. I have more than one tool in my toolbox too! Great vid!
Its funny. You end up riding the Zero most of the time because it so damn much fun. And when you hop on the gas bike it feels like a locomotive, loud, dirty, and slow.
@@thorstambaugh1520 Even funnier when you think about it is the fact that they are, generally speaking, diesel powered rolling generators. A big ass diesel engine, b.f. alternator, and 6 electric traction motors. lmfao.
@@storejoshuprite not all od them, but yes. Just because mechanical transmissions for them have to be huge and pretty expensive.
More than one tool in your toolbox, eh? Is that euphemistic speak?
@@thorstambaugh1520 if your bike is dirty its your problem because u don't clean it. If its lound install a silent exhaust, if its slow then its an old piece of crap. Gas is much more fun. Sound, smoke, gear shifting, revving and no need to wait for it to charge
Proper situational awareness is key on a bike, of course.
bike accelerates more often. so it creates more noise. see what you saying. but loud people do notice loud pipes.
I legit love that you captured one of the most amazing things about electric motorcycles: Silence. I love hearing my engine roar on every turn in my sports bike, but the silent experience when riding electric is just unmatched.
I must say this is the most unique bike review I've seen.
That intro where he did a burnout actually made me say "holy shit" out loud
Holy smokes*
I like the video, nice idea to make it look old fashion like that. However the burnout is cool but the high pitched sound of the bike reminds me my old drill :D

Incredible content and well crafted videos, presented in a way that just makes me want to keep tuning in! F9 just did it again, well done Ryan and Aneesh Shivanekar!
The sheer amount of creativity and follow through is pretty remarkable. Great production quality.
A bike review without saying any word... this is unhearded off. Great job F9 crew!
"unheard" of hahaha
Very confusing though, I don't know if I need one or not. Lol
If cops have a tendency to pull over loud vehicles then....will this bike be never pulled over?😱
I think that's the case.
I have a Zero SR. I love the look on cops faces when I pull up next to them and they had no clue I was there.
The hell just happened? I watched this until the end, Congratulations!
6:37, that part! Hahaha!!
Brilliant, simply brilliant video! As usual, outstanding quality! Awesome work again!

Simply the best review I've ever seen. Well crafted, intelligent, funny, informative.
This has to be one of your best videos YET. Congrats F9, this was beautiful
I still don`t understand how this guy does it. This is the best quality youtube channel, and he seems to be putting litte efforts to it aswell.
F9 is amazing. Probadly has a IQ of 300 or something :P
Probably can spell probably too 😂
Guess he doesn't spell as probadly...
Its a whole company not just him
Bruno Mikan Yeah, they have a team behind videos but usually that usually means repeatably soulless or even straight shitty content. And they care more about making an honest review than pushing a supplier's crap.
probadly = in favor of badly

I can go to In-n-Out at midnight and not wake the neighbors :D
Some owners have gone for the charger upgrades that allow you to charge rather quickly using car charging stations.
@Dave Stern Battery has to be replace-able in the future if we stay in lithium-ion for a while.
@@gctdonyre hopefully graphene in batteries gets adopted. It should help with longevity, capacity, and over all performance of li-ion batteries. Video of Samsung work into possible graphene batteries: ua-cam.com/video/Go2g_BNpG_Y/v-deo.html
Henry Wes Your gas bike is no way greener than this. Remember, they also need batteries and engine oil.

For a bike that quiet to have a kickstand that noisy is unforgivable!!! 😂
Loud kickstands save lives.

What kind of exhaust should I get for my electric bike. : ]
Something from Kirby or Hoover, maybe? 😏
A piece of plastic to rattle against the wheel spokes.
Install a speaker with exhaust sound recorded.

dude!!! Im after buying a Harley so watched a couple of your very informative reviews. Ive now spent the last 2 hours watching a lot of your other vids!!! Im hooked! Its great to have a reviewer talk our language. Awesome.
I love the editing, very unique.
I get the practicality in urban settings, but I need a bike to commute 55 miles each way on motorway to get me to work. Electric tech still can't give me that without some serious range anxiety. But hey, big step in the right direction!
They have bikes that go way beyond 55 miles. Just gotta pay more haha
Les in UK
I believe the bike chargers faster than 8 hours. You only need enough range for a one way trip if you have a charger at the other end.
At least right now - No. No charging points anywhere near me. :/ They are slowly becoming more common in the UK, though.
Try asking. My work was reluctant at first but it fitted with their green goals.

you deserve WAY MORE attention your videos are phenomenal
I had never heard of this and didn't realize I needed one in my life until just now. Damn it.
Not even motorcycle reviews. Makin short film pieces👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Really Fantastico! The ability to share your toughts and opinion just with figures and pictures and no one word is simply great!!
Your content is so high quality, you're really awesome!
production value: off chart! well done!

FIRST SILENT REVIEW I HAVE EVER SEEN YET SO INFORMATIVE!
GREAT JOB!
Thought I was gonna only watch a minute or two but watched the whole thing. Probably the only UA-cam video beyond the length of a music video I’ve watched entirely and enjoyed. Great film work and editing
I laughed out loud a few times through this! So great! 😂😂
Not a single word was spoken and yet its still one of the most comprehensive reviews i have ever watched.
let's not exaggerate.. it is on the artistic side of things :}
They say, "loud pipes save lives" then.... does this bike loose lives?
3:21 Your stupid trails ruined my windows homescreen
TORQUE!!!
INSTANT! (well, minus what the throttle mapping takes out so you don’t fall off the back every time to go from standstill :))
Well scripted video review. Very unique! :-)
Wow the most unique review i have ever seen! Great job! And right in my back yard!
