  • Manned submarines could become a thing of the past as undersea warfare hots up and technological developments allow drones to take over.
Blue Whale is an Israeli-developed autonomous submarine designed for navies wanting to move away from manned platforms doing dangerous tasks.
Its capabilities include detecting undersea vehicles and submarines, and conducting ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) missions ahead of potential amphibious landings.

Sounds ideal for sud sea cable monitoring and protection.

Excellent, some positive news regarding sub-surface autonomous systems development, a critical enabler which needs to complement, but not entirely replace crewed submarines. I feel there should always be a Man-in-the-Loop core capability backed up by a comprehensive array of autonomous ISTAR and eventually active defensive and offensive systems. This capability now needs to be funded properly and brought into service asap with the Royal Navy, with particular focus on the UK’s ASW and surveillance and protection of Undersea Infrastructure. Our National Security depends on this, now more than ever!

"Cetus", apt for an autonomous cetacean.

I wonder with a proliferation of these vehicles in the seas how cetaceans will be protected from excess sound or anything else we did seemingly just decimate one species with the new sonar?

Every torpedo is an autonomous submarine.

    Does warfare have a future?
The IPCC questions whether any warfare in the immediate future is compatible with globally accepted climate change goals.
It seems the arms industry and global militaries are ignoring their responsibility to cut AND prevent carbon emissions.
Damage done by war results in the production of carbon emissions.
Leaders and militaries do not factor in rebuilding emissions into warfare emissions.

I can't wait until someone puts an AI into a tunneling machine. Then we can have autonomous drones in the air, in the seas, and underground.

Not recognising marine options and rthreats, is a bad move. Consider the advances Ukraine has done, and its effects. From a nation to have no navy, to one that doesn't need one.

Competitions run here in the UK for these over the last years, open to anyone.

Are you talking about 'subrace' - the competition for human-powered subs? That's the polar opposite of this. It's cool as, but it's not "for these". Is there something for autonomous/uncrewed subs?
