why you add D major..
Why would there be a D Major chord in an E major track? Throws it all off...
It's a modulation he borrowed the D major from the mixolydian mode instead of the Dmb5 from the ionian mode (the ionian mode is the major scale). (VIIb degree instead of Viib5). It gives a "rock" feeling, cause the myxolyduian mode is the mode of rock and blues.
I think there might be several theories to explain, I only interpret it like this.
