  • This is our wee dander through Enniskerry village Co Wicklow. This quaint Irish village lies next door to the fabulous Powerscourt Estate.
( Many thanks to Richard White, who posted in very welcome detail about the Clock Tower that dominates the centre of the village. He says,
'The town looks very Georgian especially those houses you showed us. The Free-standing Renaissance style three-stage granite clock tower, built 1843, possibly to designs by John Louch, with cupola added in 1860 by Sir George Moyers.'
Enniskerry, (historically Annaskerry, from Irish: Áth na Sceire, meaning 'rugged ford') is a village in County Wicklow Ireland. The population was 1,889 at the 2016 census.
The town is situated on the Glencullen/Cookstown? River in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. It lies 24 km (15 mi) south of Dublin. Bray, on the coast is the nearest large town.
Enniskerry is a planned estate village dating from the 1840s, with the original buildings designed in a neo-Tudor style. Later additions are Georgian. The Protestant population of the village attended church in the grounds of the Powerscourt Demesne until 1859. Mervyn Wingfield, 7th Viscount Powerscourt built a new church, Saint Patrick's, in the village, which was completed two years later, in 1861. This coincided with an extensive renovation programme that also established the Italian gardens at Powerscourt.
    Film and TV connections
In 1944, Enniskerry was the setting for some scenes of Laurence Olivier's film adaptation of Henry V. The local community provided a number of the extras in the film.
Johnny Nobody (released in 1961) was partly filmed in Enniskerry.
Scenes from a number of other films, including P.S I Love You (2007) Into the West (1992) and Leap Year (2010) were also shot locally, and the Powerscourt Estate was used as a location for The Count of Monte Cristo (2002).
The village has been the set for numerous television advertisements. From 1996 to 2001, along with Avoca, County Wicklow, it played host to the television series Ballykissangel. On 16 March 2009, Meredith Vieira and Al Roker broadcast live in Enniskerry for NBC's Today Show.

Thanks very much for sharing that Tom. Brought back many happy memories of trips to Enniskerry as a teenager, get the 44 bus out from Dundrum and hike the Wicklow hills. If you'd carried on up the hill past the Garda station, there's a little road to the right and a lovely old stone forge with the door in the shape of a horseshoe. Probably took care of the farriery for the horses from Powerscourt estate. If you didn't take that road but continued up the steep hill there's a very fine church (Protestant if I remember correctly) on the left. Enniskerry is a magical little place, nestling among hills and moorland. Glad to see it's being well looked after. Hope you enjoyed your visit. Wicklow is known as the Garden of Ireland. Lovely coastline too. Best wishes.

Ah Barry! If only I'd known about the old stone forge....... I'm sorry to have missed that. Thankfully we stopped in and filmed the Powerscourt Church of Ireland built by the Powerscourt Wingate family. The village is indeed picture postcard perfect. We were impressed. The Kingfisher did great tea and scones.

We had a super time. We love discovering all these hidden gems, most of them aren't on any tourist map. Yes we checked out Bray and Greystones coastlines too. I'm so glad I brought back a few happy memories for you. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

Yes Shaun that phone box would indeed be rare nowadays. Enniskerry has been used quite a few times over the years as a film set backdrop. A quaint sleepy wee village.

Hi Tom nice wee walk around, I’m sure you know the red and white pole is a barbers pole, the stripes represent blood and bandages, back in the day your local barber cut your hair and bandages your wounds. Well I’m a barber never bandaged any wound’s,but, I customer asked to take the stitches out of his hand, and I obliged so keeping a little of the tradition going. The town looks very Georgian especially those houses you showed us. The Free-standing Renaissance style three-stage granite clock tower, built 1843, possibly to designs by John Louch, with cupola added in 1860 by Sir George Moyers.

Yes I know the old story Richard! lol Very few of these barbers poles remaining. I presume that in the olden days a lot of jobs like the barber would have been interchangeable. No doctor's surgeries or A&E so people doubled up. Great stuff that you could do that and were willing. Wow, brilliant clock tower information Richard!!!!!!!! I'll add that to the video notes below. I was disappointed there was no signage on the tower apart from the Latin numeral date. Thanks for taking the time on this!!

Most people heading for Powerscourt hardly give Enniskeery a second look. Yet is is a fascinating quaint wee village. It has been the backdrop for quite a few films and the TV series Ballykissangel.

That string of letters represents Roman numerals that tell the year in which that monument was built. This means that it was built in 1843 in the Renaissance.
