Re-scoring Spirited Away

- Joe Hisaishi's scores for Hayo Miyazki's films evoke a feeling unlike any other film score. In this essay, I look at how Hisaishi's approach to writing music for Studio Ghibli films leads to this unique soundworld and show how successful his approach is by re-scoring a scene taken from the middle act of 'Spirited Away'.

I can't be the only one who wanted this to be like 3 times as long
I will not get tired of these kind of topics delving into scores. So good!
Thank you! I thought your video was beautiful, by the way. So well put together.
@@ListeningIn get listen, My birthday has already passed away but maybe you could do 2 more episodes of 2 studio ghilbi songs and realise both of them on April the first?
Laputa the castle in the sky and Howls moving castle are My childhood films I watched when I was little and it would mean a lot to hear you exsplain the theme songs of the 2 films in 1 or 2 secrets videos
The last few birthdays have been terrible and I got nothing or no one for My 18th Birthday this year and it will mean do much if you could do this for Me. Keep up the great job and keep making more videos, you do such a great job and you deserve 100k subscribers for it
Everyone covers Hayao and this is one of the not only first analysis i’ve seen on Joe Hisaishi, but the best. Wish it was longer!
I have the art book of Princess mononoke, and in the beginning you have poems by Miyazaki which he wrote for joe Hisaishi, so he can base his scores off of them - they are so beautiful, and Hisaishi really captured them so well. It makes even more sense now that you explained how they approach writing music. Kinda wish you mentioned that movie. In a future Video, perhaps?
"I've picked up some new friends, see.." with her smile and playing that variation on One Summer's Day instantly makes me tear up and I don't know why.. 😢
I have been trying to figure out why Joe's music is so different from anything else out there. And I think here you explain it really well. He uses his own ideas and vision before the movies are finished. He captures the essence of what he sees. I saw him life in Belgium not so long ago. By far the most emotional musical experience I have had. Thank you for covering him and his work!
What I discovered in my studies is that Hayao claims he doesn’t have an ear for music, but he plays stuff on repeat until a scene forms in his mind. It’s pretty cool, and seeing you explain how he does that is so cool. Thank you!
Once again, thank you so much for the incredible high quality content you share with us here on UA-cam, we really appreciate it!
My pleasure! Thank you so much for watching!
God I love watching these. I wish I could animate half as well as you!! What mic do you use if you don't mind me asking?
PS now supporting you on Patreon! Keep making these!!
I've just seen - thank you so much Oscar! I'm so grateful! I use a Yeti Blue (www.amazon.co.uk/Blue-Recording-Streaming-Condenser-Adjustable/dp/B00N1YPXW2/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=yeti+blue&qid=1606854736&quartzVehicle=106-1349&replacementKeywords=blue&sr=8-5) with some manipulation of the audio. I think the microphone is great. What do you use?
Listening In I have that same mic but it definitely doesn't sound this good. Maybe it's just my voice lol
Haha maybe it is just your voice then!
Ha! I'm sure it's not just my voice...
Always loved Ghibli music. really brings something whenever I listen to it.
Most underrated page on UA-cam fo real.
Amazing job
the funny thing is that you used micky-mousing to accompany the emotional structure of your video. Just thought it was something worth noting lol
Joe Hisaishi at his finest! Thank you, as always, for the lovely essay! 😊
This channel deserves waaaaaay more love and subscribers. He is so good at teaching and explaining!!! Thank you for all your videos!
Truly made my day!
Thank you Robert!
@@ListeningIn I feel really bad I cannot contribute to your patreon at this time, you are easily my favorite channel on UA-cam. When times get a little better, I promise you'll get my support! Keep up the great work.
Wow I'm so glad I found your channel. Absolutely beautiful work
Ugh I could watch your videos all day. So beautiful. Great work.
Thank you so much AJ!
Thanks for including Miyazaki in your content.
Would love more videos of of hisaishi's music! All of your videos have a "re-watch-ability" unlike most other's on UA-cam. I would love a more in-depth hisaishi video!
This is so well-made, great job!
This is honestly such a beautiful video!!!
Hey, this was excellent! So glad the Director Project brought me here. Definitely going to check out some more of your vids, thanks.
This channel is so underrated.
I have been a great fan of studio ghibli for quite some time, yet I cannot decide uppon which of the film scores I like the most. Every single one of them carries some great emotional connection for me. I would love it if you would cover Hisaishi's other works.
this was so wonderful, thank you
I love "Cave of Mind." Which was used when Sophie travels back in time to see how Calcifer and Howl became one. It reminded me of an American composer named Aaron Copland.
Thanks for this video man😍😍 Loved it
This is so good!!!! I didn’t know anything about image albums, and the example you gave with the rescored scene really got the message across effectively. I learned a lot, thanks!
I thought image albums were just collections of songs sang in-character by an anime's voice actors?
one of the best vids I've seen!
This is the most underrated video I've ever seen on youtube
Great video, knew the music in this was special just couldn’t quite explain it
Neat approach to analyzing Hisaishi's music. It works wonderfully.
i cannot agree more with the point you made, and i love the very calm and smooth aesthetic of your videos.
I think Imagination, as you said, is the singular thing that draws me the most to the Ghibli universe.
unlike so many other soundtracks, Hisaishi's music can be listened to by itself and be just as impactful.
Brilliant and beautiful
dude, you are amazing!!!
Thank you Diego!
incredible video!
Version 2 hit really hard
Interesting. I believe this image album thing is also what is given to Hans Zimmer for the music in Dune 2020 and we see it as the "sketch book" and the pieces he composed for the film.
This was beautiful friend.
wonderful video
Fascinating. I've never forgotten seeing Castle in the sky in the UK in the 80s at Christmas - first time I'd ever seen something that wasn't a disney cartoon and I was mesmerised. It's still my favourite Miyazake movie, and I love the music as well.
at last someone actually talks about Joe Hisaishi's music! if u want to cover more score in anime movies, i'd like to suggest Silent Voice's musical score. the theme song always make me cry
I love Hisaishi's music.
Man... That's beautiful.
I just finished a new PC/monitor setup, and this was the first video I watched on it. Definitely a great choice :)
I think I almost subconsciously consider that piano piece less as part of the score and more like an insert song, though it has no lyrics. There's no leitmotivic use of it, it's not incorporated into other compositions, rather it comes in and everything else is put on rest for a minute.
That’s a really beautiful way of putting it. You’re right, it sort of suspends the narrative.
Très juste !
I looove Hisaishi.
*sighs in delight*
So much love for Ghibli films. Would love to see a video essay on Akira Ikufube... Godzilla's theme!!! 🤩🤩
This and other vids are incredibly good!
PS What do you think about susumu hirasawa and his music? I find it chaotic (like parade in Paprika) and at the same time highly catchy.
Perhaps a better example of this is the final music to Princess Kaguya when she is returning to her moon family taken from her parents who we have journeyed throughout her earth life from a baby, erased of all memory of them, whilst the music is playing the most joyous and festive music of the whole film. The music is not only emotionally contradictory, completely insensitive to the emotional transaction the film provokes in the audience, but is actually more intelligent and objective to the sutation. So whilst the audience's emotion feels one way, the music actually leads the audience to the right perception of the moment.
Hisaishi is one of the very best
I’m not always interested with the score, Buu the you gave me some for thought. Thanks.
That's interesting -- in the book of Yiruma's sheet music I have, "Remembrance", each piece has a name referring to a particular feeling or situation. I guess it's movie music, although to my knowledge only one piece has been used in a movie.
One of my favourite video-essayists covering one of my favourite composers scores for one of my favourite directors. This is perfect!
By the way, have you ever listened to Hisaishi's classical works (unrelated to films or videogames)? I really quite like some of them and would definitely recommend checking them out, but they're unfortunately quite obscure and completely overshadowed by his filmscores.
I haven’t listened to them, but I definitely will. It’s be really interesting to hear what his concert works are like. Thank you for watching a glad you enjoyed it!
@@ListeningIn I'd probably recommend either his String Quartet or "East Land" Symphony to begin with, although within the limited number of pieces he's done there's a lot of variety style-wise.
I actually did a small write-up going through his classical works in chronological order (with links and playlists, since his works are a bit difficult to find just using a regular search), on reddit if you're interested. He's had a fairly unique career, and going through his statements and quotes in regards to it was quite interesting. old.reddit.com/r/classicalmusic/comments/i2uim9/an_introduction_to_joe_hisaishi_from_a_classical/
The analysis of the score of Blade Runner from you would be so interesting to watch
I've watched a lot of Miyazaki's films, and it took me a while to warm up to Hisaishi's music. I especially did not like the music at the end of Princess Monanoake, after everything blows up. It seemed incredibly schmaltzy. But your analysis has made me reconsider this composer. And I admit, the music in Spirited Away is effective. I certainly noticed that the style of Japanese music was very different, it seemed at first to me to be very clumsy and naive. You've inspired me to take a second look at the genre.
I can't believe you went and Mickey Moused your last line after all of that XD (Wonderful video though, always inspired by your essays :D)
I'd love to see an analysis of yours on both Blade Runner movies 🙏
Ok what is the vocal rendition of the Spirited Away theme at the 2;50 mark?
BTW I'm, so glad Hisashi Joe is getting the recognition in the west he deserves
Would you say that FLCL does the inverse of both approaches? Timing the action to the music, and letting what's in front of our eyes and ears dazzle and distract us from the characters' true mental state?
Hiroshi Miyagawa? Where almost all of the major music in Space Battleship Yamato are mods of a few themes.
You need to do more Mitazaki films. Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa are begging for a deep dive
Does anyone know the source of the footage from 1:55 to 2:10? It's amazing!
Could you tell me who covered "One Summer's Day" from 2:28? Sounds beautiful.
Thank you for great content!
That was me! Added strings to the original (mainly for copyright reasons!).
@@ListeningIn wait, there is an official version of this piece with vocals on top? I couldn't find it.
Oh! That’s Hisaishi’s original version from his image album. Search for ‘Spirited Away image album’.
@@ListeningIn now I see. Thank you!
Do you know anywhere I can get scenes from Ghibli films with the score removed? I'd love to practice scoring on some Ghibli scenes! Thank you.
Sorry, no. I created the dialogue-only version by removing the music from the film audio. If you're interested in doing it, I used a programme called Xtrax Stems (audionamix.com/xtrax-stems/).
@@ListeningIn Okay thank you!
A comment for the algorithm!
Why does one has to be better than the other. I mean its all down to someone ideal on how to tell a story.
omg i do the same :D ;D
The link in the description to the director project playlist seems broken. ua-cam.com/play/PL_XBsckzagj23_rA59PO3i1AcIb2Igv0I.html This works for me
Have you thought about a video analysing Cyriak's videos? I'm sure there's some microtonal stuff and other weirdness that gives them such an unsettling feel. It'll be interesting seeing how he does it.
Spectacle and tension is sacrificed for imagination and emotion. At least, that's what I hear in Ghibli music
Music plays such a major emotional role in film and I think this is why much of anime for me is a disconnect. The score never feels relevant to the pictures on screen, or at least some anime is that way.
That’s really interesting. Have you got an example? I don’t that much anime, but would like to see more!
This! It's always some god damn j-pop song playing over medieval fantasy settings lol
Yes. And it's better
too bad you did not keep the original language in those sequences....
