Although he isn't widely known in the western world, May I mention Seiji Yokoyama? He is mostly known as the composer for Saint Seiya OST. I wish you guys can check out his work. Songs like "Inside a dream" o "Heated Saints" are worth listen to
The train scene from Spirited Away is so moving especially with the music reinforcing the sorrow the main character is feeling. It's the first time she's had to just stop and has nothing to distract her from everything that's happened.
Studio Ghibli compositions always have this way of presenting things in dichotomy: intimate in an empty space; weightlessness and gravity; standing still and pulled forward. It makes it feel like you know you’re in a dream. It evokes both melancholy and joy.
I think you are missing mentioning the MELODY. That is a big plus whenever a Hisaishi piece is played. His melodies are memorable with all the interesting key changes or remarkable inversions.
I don't remember if you checked it out on your last Ghibli reaction, but Hisaishi's "Merry-Go-Round of Life" from Howl's Moving Castle is such an incredibly beautiful track I'd love to hear how you'd break it down.
Joe has a piano strung with heartstrings, His works, both in movies and not, just tear me apart sometimes. absolute artistry and beauty, a perfect match for Hayao Miyazaki's works in my personal opinion. Both can render me to tears.
I think Joe Hisaishi’s unique ability to, through his music, caress both you, the story, the characters’s fate in the film, very gently while opening your heart… is why his film scores are so touching. The theory can be studied to death, but ultimately it comes down to communicating a genuine understanding and care for people.
I have had the same ticket for a Joe Hisaishi concert rescheduled 3 times in the last 3 years due to covid. I will be so happy when the show is finally allowed to happen
It's the gateway to anime because the real music is the friends we make along the way. Seriously, Studio Ghibli knows the right amount of heartstrings to pull. They prove how powerful music can be. And that's on top of the beauty of Ghibli's animation. A perfect balance
I’m so glad you did A Town with an Ocean View. One of my favorite songs from Joe Hisaishi! As many others said, would love another one of these or focusing on one of the other Ghibli films you haven’t covered! There’s something so special and emotional about Joe Hisaishi’s work.
I hope one day you'll take a look at "Laputa: Castle in the Sky" 's and "My Neighbor Totoro" 's main themes :) Joe Hisaishi is an absolute legend. I love his music so much.
Charles has actually done 2 other videos on Studio Ghibli already, one of them, from 6 months ago, on Spirited Away specifically, and the other coming up on 2 years ago, including pieces of all three
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I was thinking "I hope he listens to The Legend Of Ashitaka" It's phenomenal! Certainly my favourite piece of music from any Ghibli film. You'll hear the same themes all throughout Joe Hisaishi's work. It's pretty romantic at it's core imo.
Me learning porco rosso for about a couple months knew the notes, and key it plays on. Seeing him progressively figuring it out by the second was truly amazing
Joe Hisaishi.. honestly creates these masterpieces of music, some of them I think can be on a level like Beethoven’s work, or Mozart. Ghibli has always had put talent and hard work into everything, and it can reflect on there works of films. Sixth Station is my favourite Joe Hisaishi piece. I wanna play it on my funeral
11:05 that's the kind of moments I love in your videos. You just take a Ghibli song and associate it with an awesome jazz exercise. I already knew about this type of chord but I've never seen it from this perspective ! Thanks you for your valuable content ❤
The Legend of Ashitaka made my face tingle the first time I heard it as a wee lad. To this day it is my favourite Ghibli track and that is really saying something considering just how GOOD all of them are
If you haven't already, I'd greatly enjoy your take on some Ryuichi Sakamoto pieces; he was a great inspiration to Ghibli composer Joe Hisashi and is a preeminent example of western style music with a distinctly Japanese inflection. Maybe. I'm not musically trained, but I'm a big fan of Sakamoto and love these videos
Sakamoto is great! I love also his work with David Sylvian. In particular the album Secrets of the Beehive which I think every person in the world should give a listen to
Maj7#4 (or #11 but I mostly see it replacing the 3rd, not extending on it in these cases) is used so frequently, from what I can tell, because it is a nearly complete chord of the In Sen scale-one of the two main Japanese pentatonic scales-of its 7th. For example, Fmaj7#4 has all the notes of an In Sen scale starting on E, excluding only D.
So something that I've noticed with "A Town With An Ocean View" is that its motion flows in and out like a tide, which helps explain the title and theme of the piece.
Honestly, I love your videos like this because they're not just entertaining but I also end up learning a lot about composing and music theory and your perception of everything happening in the song is awesome! I would also like to request some more Zelda Breath of the wild 👀
Loved the part when he accidentally starts playing Spirited Away. Great video as always. Would love to see you check out some works by Nobuo Uematsu from Final Fantasy.
I would say Studio Ghibli is responsible for creating a lot of the anime sound we are familiar with today and also setting the bar for how good animated food looks. Please do a part 2 of their works this is great!
Joe Hisaishi is just BEYOND incredible with the music he composes. Just beautiful and full of feeling. He knows how to expressing feeling through music.
Ahhhh I loved this!!!! でも惜しい!!! I wish Charles was familiar with the story a little for Kiki's! Its about Kiki, a young witch, who only knows how to fly, flying off to find a town to 'settle' in. So that base upward motion (flying off) that lands (settles) on the 5th is sooo relevant to the narrative!!
I'm so happy you made another video on those masterpieces !!! I've discovered a lot of music thanks to internet, and with channels like yours, but those pieces, particularly the ones you analysed here, are amongst my favorite musics ever. So emotional, powerful and light at the same time, sounds like childhood but mature at the same time
If you like Ghibli and you also like jazz, Platina Jazz is definitely your go-to band, they make amazing jazz versions of Ghibli movie themes and they're amazing. Give them a listen if you are interested, they have a few albums
Fun fact about Kiki's Delivery Service; the city of Koriko in which the movie is set is primarily based on the swedish cities of Stockholm and Visby. Very beautiful cities (no bias whatsoever because I'm from Stockholm)
It might be a little niche, but Yoko Shimomura's work on Radiant Historia is absolutely incredible and worth checking out! She's also worked on more famous games like Kingdom Hearts
Joe Hisaishi is one of the greatest composers of the last century, full stop. His music just conveys so much depth and richness of the human experience ❤
Charles have you ever checked out Nier automata’s sound track?? I remember playing through and actually just being taken away by it I’d love to see your thoughts on it!
I don't know much about music (I work in TV), but I love your channel! Violet Evergarden is one of my very favorite anime, & has an absolutely GORGEOUS soundtrack! Don't know if it's complex enough for a breakdown, but it's absolutely worth checking out!
Charles, have you ever heard of FKJ? He's a french artist and, in my opinion, a genius when it comes to music. I would love to see you analyze some of his pieces. For example: Sundays (piano piece) or Us (Color Show Session)!
I wish this episode was twice as long.. A Town With An Ocean View and Bygone Days are 2 of my favorite pieces from Joe Hisaishi, so to hear them both in 1 episode is just great 🤗 Btw, the audio clips used seem to be from the Budokan Studio Ghibli 25 Years Concert (from 2008). It's easy to find on UA-cam, it's awesome. Just the opening suite from Nausicaa is already worth it.
I always love how enthusiastic you are about good chord progressions. Although I don't fully understand the technicalities of what's happening in some music, I get a lot of the same feelings unconsciously. Especially from Joe Hisaishi and Studio Ghibli
I gasped when you started to play One Summer’s Day BY ACCIDENT! We love to see it! It’s super cool how Joe Hisaishi made both songs in the same key but with completely different feels. Where One Summer’s Day feels almost whimsical and mysterious while Bygone Days is more jazzy. Hisaishi is truly a master at his craft.
Watching jazz musicians marvel at simple inversions never fails to entertain. For the record, the chord with its 3rd in the bass is called a 6 chord, or sextacord. If the 5th is in the bass, it's a 64 chord or quartsextacord. As in, C-E-G is a C5 chord, E-G-C is a C6 chord, and G-C-E is a C64.

I love these videos SOOOOOO much, and I am still hoping every day to see you break down HOWLS MOVING CASTLE!!! It is one of the most beautiful and enchanting things I have ever heard ever, and I wonder how jazzy it is or if it's mainly so good just cuz of its composition over basic chords
Please just more Ghibli! Love the way you analyze them and improvise . Totoro's beautiful as well. Btw, Annique from the "Heart of the keys" channel recently sight read several Ghiblis. Can't get enough.
You should do a video listening some Casiopea songs, they're a japanese jazz fusion group from the 80's, their songs are so awsome, songs like, Domino line, Midnight Rendezvous, Reflections of You and Tears of the Star, all amazing, love yout videos Charles

You should check out Sky: Children of the light
Pixar’s Soul please! It seems like a perfect fit for this channel
28th time of asking to make a video on Bayonetta OST
out of context here, but i think you gotta check out electronic artists (ie. porter robinson, madeon, etc). I'm a huge fan
Joe hisaishi is my all time favorite composer and he has a ton of amazing independent work out side of films that you should check out too
I agree. Piano Stories II from 1996 is by far my favourite of his albums.
@@malcolmaaron4496 that’s probably second for me. Piano Stories III is unmatched with that il porco rosso arrangement.
He's in my top 3 too
Although he isn't widely known in the western world, May I mention Seiji Yokoyama? He is mostly known as the composer for Saint Seiya OST. I wish you guys can check out his work. Songs like "Inside a dream" o "Heated Saints" are worth listen to
I always listen to his song "White Night" as an unofficial Christmas song. It sounds like sitting by a snowy window sipping hot chocolate.
Accidently playing spirited away theme is not necessarily a bad thing
lol
Lmao
Hilarious
15:00
Ah, I see what u did there. Well done!
The train scene from Spirited Away is so moving especially with the music reinforcing the sorrow the main character is feeling. It's the first time she's had to just stop and has nothing to distract her from everything that's happened.
Princess Mononoke is my favorite Ghibli score and it’s so gorgeous in how simple it really is. Also my favorite movie
Studio Ghibli compositions always have this way of presenting things in dichotomy: intimate in an empty space; weightlessness and gravity; standing still and pulled forward. It makes it feel like you know you’re in a dream. It evokes both melancholy and joy.

Yes and such sad anime but just happy to watch it with the sadness to remember live life to fullest.

Such a beautiful piece of music ❤
I love castle in the sky!!!!!
Yes! And Howl’s Moving Castle
For a jazz take on anime, I recommend The Consouls ua-cam.com/video/fs-iJdGQdL0/v-deo.html
Part 2 of this. For spirited away, howl's moving castle, my neighbor totoro... all of them have joe hisaishi's music
Charles has actually done 2 other videos on Studio Ghibli already, one of them, from 6 months ago, on Spirited Away specifically, and the other coming up on 2 years ago, including pieces of all three
The music also good as jazz - especially when The COnsouls play ua-cam.com/video/fs-iJdGQdL0/v-deo.html
Yes…honestly, Charles, your understanding of music and the beauty of voicing and the complexity you go into is just…it is amazing
Bygone Days is one of the most beautiful pieces of music that I have ever experienced. It moves me every single time.

The non-main themes are so so so beautiful. I have a cover of it on my channel with my chinese musical instrument :)
@@Epicentera The anniversary concert is probably the most beautiful thing in this world! How I wish I could have been there in person~

Joe Hisaishi Is An Absolute LEGEND At Composing, He Has Made SOO MANY PHENOMENAL SONGS! So Many Memorable Beautiful Pieces. ❤
The Legend of Ashitaka made my face tingle the first time I heard it as a wee lad. To this day it is my favourite Ghibli track and that is really saying something considering just how GOOD all of them are
its a good as day when this man makes a ghibli video
True

The porco rosso theme is so underrated! Captures the feel of the movie so perfectly 🥹
I think the opening theme of Nausicaa is one of Hisaishi’s most underrated pieces. That string section that comes in toward the end is so powerful.
Maj7#4 (or #11 but I mostly see it replacing the 3rd, not extending on it in these cases) is used so frequently, from what I can tell, because it is a nearly complete chord of the In Sen scale-one of the two main Japanese pentatonic scales-of its 7th.

I couldn’t make a video like this. Too much crying from all the masterful compositions
What about "The town with ocean view". It feels so sentimental. Back then i had a depression, when i heard this song i cried 🥹🥰
Thanks for video 🫂
Ghibli music just puts a huge smile on my face and it does so _effortlessly_
I wish you would do more of these studio ghibli videos! I love all the music in it and how you break it down in a way I can almost comprehend 😂
I LOVE the fact you included poco Rosso, one of the most underrated movies from ghibli!
My excitement went through the roof when I saw Bygone Days!
Honestly, I love your videos like this because they're not just entertaining but I also end up learning a lot about composing and music theory and your perception of everything happening in the song is awesome!
I would also like to request some more Zelda Breath of the wild 👀
these pieces always bring me to tears, everytime.
Props for covering Porco Rosso! The English dub did that movie dirty. It's my personal favorite.
5:30 sounds like we wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year
1:47 to 1:52 reminds me of Beatles - Blackbird. Or at least the Geoff Castelucci cover of it
Loved the part when he accidentally starts playing Spirited Away. Great video as always. Would love to see you check out some works by Nobuo Uematsu from Final Fantasy.
I would say Studio Ghibli is responsible for creating a lot of the anime sound we are familiar with today and also setting the bar for how good animated food looks. Please do a part 2 of their works this is great!
the four chord progression in “bygone days” is my favourite progression ever ❤ literally any song with that progression is a major vibe
ghibli's music is some of anime's finest and best music. ever.
The "what is that?" moment at 15:05 had me cracking up
I love studio ghibli and their music so I'm so glad you made this video
Joe Hisaishi is just BEYOND incredible with the music he composes. Just beautiful and full of feeling. He knows how to expressing feeling through music.
I know absolutely nothing about music but I still find these videos absolutely fascinating. Keep up the great work!
I watched Porco Rosso for the first time in 10+ years a few weeks ago, and I have been listening to Bygone Days nonstop since. Highly recommend.
Please do a video focused on only princess mononoke's music, it's just amazing

It might be a little niche, but Yoko Shimomura's work on Radiant Historia is absolutely incredible and worth checking out! She's also worked on more famous games like Kingdom Hearts
I really love her work on Final Fantasy XV. Somnus is my favorite piece.
For your reference, the name of the composer of Ghibli, ”Joe Hisaishi”, written in Kanji, it reads "Quincy Joe". who he respects.
The wind rises is underrated. it has the best story and music among all ghibli's movies
Thank you so much for this video. I enjoy Ghibli's soundtracks and now learning The Bygone Days on the piano.
That Oh-woahh at 6:00 got me!😂😂😂😂

Love your videos! I notice I slowly start to recognise these musical patterns more and more because of your videos, it is quite nice :)
I could listen to you improvising forever. You should do it more often in your videos!
Nausica is Ghiblis first film I think, the music for that particularly in the intro is immaculate.
Gosh its amazing
Charles got spirited away for a sec. As expected
Charles have you ever checked out Nier automata’s sound track?? I remember playing through and actually just being taken away by it I’d love to see your thoughts on it!
The opening theme of Naussica of the Valley of the Wind is utterly fantastic; the part from at 2:00 to 3:50 makes me tear up every time.

Kiki's Delivery Service was one of my fave. Plus her city reminds me of my small countrytown in france where I grew up.
You picked my absolute favorite Studio Ghibli song first. A Town with an Ocean View has brought me those feelings of wonder and chills many times.
It's interesting how I can still enjoy this video so much even if I don't understand a thing he says lmao
I got to see Joe Hisaishi in concert this summer and he played the Princess Mononoke song and it was beautifuuuuul. I cried
I'm p sure I would cry if I heard any of this music live
15:01 I was laughing hard when, out of nowhere, he started playing Spirited Away xD
voice leading! An important part of why some of these chords are in 1st inversion.
11:05 - Lovely. Would like to hear this as a full song.
love how you ended up playing one summer's day starting from bygone days haha

platinum disco would be a fine introduction too in my opinion
I love how the show has different opening themes tied to different characters
