  • The Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0 is a premium full suspension SUV electric mountain bike that blends commuting with cross country, trail, and high-speed performance. includes outstanding custom fenders, rear rack, a 1,000 lumen headlight, and brake sensitive rear light. Available in four frame sizes, two colors, and three trim levels (4.0, 5.0, 6.0). Mullet wheel setup with 29" front and 27.5" rear. Excellent weight distribution and electronics integration, IPX6 water and dust rated. Lightweight, smooth, responsive Brose motor (custom made Specialized 2.2 Class 3 mid-drive offering 28mph top speed). Peak torque rating of 90nm, highly tunable motor performance with Mission Control smartphone app. Internally routed cables stay out of the way and look great. Outstanding battery pack shape and mounting design, there's no need for a separate cover that adds weight and complexity, removal feels safe despite exiting downwards from the downtube. Magnetic charging interface is convenient and durable, fast 4 amp charger is compact and capable. TCD2 MasterMind color display is customizable, dimmable, has USB C charge port. Above-average air suspension, 130mm RockShox Lyric Select+ fork and 120mm RockShox Deluxe Select+ rear offering compression and rebound adjust. Dropper seat post makes the bike approachable and Body Geometry touch points feel great (to me). Pointy kickstand can sink into soft terrain, long front fender may clip obstacles, relatively high price. Great dealer network.

Hey guys! One update from the Specialized team, they've notified me that the Tero X 4.0 is also Class 3, 28mph Speed Pedelec. To confirm the complete Turbo Tero X lineup 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0 are all Class 3.

Great experiences with Specialized tero x 5.0. is super comfortable, fully suitable for everyday use in the city, as well as on a forest path, flowing trails... mega natural motor. 70nm is fully sufficient except when the most difficult, stubborn terrain is very steep uphill - then take the top version. Good value for money and a "moderate" weight of 26.5 kg. If you can only have one bike, that's probably the smartest thing to do with just about anything.

I bought a Turbo tero 5.0 last year but really wanted a FS and 700 battery so the only alternative was a Levo comp but since it's my daily commute and I wanted a bike to do cross country at weekends I had to have a kickstand so no comp but Tero 5.0 was the only option. I do around 6000 km a year and like the 5.0 but IMO the brakes and fork could have been better and I really miss FS. X 6.0 looks like the perfect bike for my use so I'll check it out when it arrives at my LBS.

    Hi Court
As always excellent job, appreciate the review.
With the exception of the pedals Specialized did not cheap out one this one. Decent drive train & suspension 4amp magnetic mount charger is a nice touch. Nice it has USB-C yet only one amp output isn't great. Surprised Specialized went with a Brose motor. As big as Specialized is you would think they would have their own branded motor.
    Thanks Court

I haven't even owned a modern or full sus much less an ebike yet and not only am I terrified of the prices I am horrified at the thought of finally picking my dream bike, dropping the cash on it, then thinking about how expensive of a thing I'm gonna be abusing and leaving around locked up when I'm not around. In fact I can't tolerate the idea of leaving something that pricey unattended that I think I'll have more peace of mind purposely picking cheaper beaters I won't be so heart broke about breaking or leaving around, although I have yet to see any worthy "cheap" emtbs. But I really do want to formulate a list of best cheapest emtbs that I can smash trails with while getting good long warranties on

Yeah, the Specialized products are some of the highest quality and coolest (in my opinion), so they are priced at the top. For $4.5k you can get the Turbo Tero X 4.0 with the lower speed and downgraded components... but it's still a pricier electric bike.

Hi. Thank you so much for the excellent review. I literally was going to call my LBS today and order the Tero 5.0 XL, as I've been trying to decide between that and the Trek Powerfly 4.0. After seeing your review, I'm now thinking I might want to hold off and get either the Tero X 5.0 (I don't think I can afford the extra $1500 to upgrade to the Tero X 6.0). Quick question - from your experience on this bike, do you think it's worth paying an extra $500 for the Tero X 5.0 (compared to the Tero 5.0)? I'm 6'3" and weigh 250 lbs. My concern is going from the 90 nm engine in the Tero to the 70 nm engine in the Tero X. I would assume since the Tero X is class 3 (vs. Tero being class 1) makes a difference, and the slight loss of torque isn't too big of a deal? Also, getting a rear suspension, fenders, rack and lights might more than make up for the difference in price. Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Yeah, that's one of the big benefits if you get a Trek, Specialized, CUBE, BULLS, or other big ebike manufacturer... they tend to have more size options. For me personally, Specialized makes some of the most comfortable bikes in general. My personal bike (that I bought independently many years ago) is a Specialized Stumpjumper full suspension, much like this Turbo Tero X.

Nice bikes and I want a Como 5.0 IGH, but neither the bike or the battery has any UL ratings. Specialized (aka People for bikes) only wants the battery to have a UL 2271 rating, instead of the "full system" UL 2849 rating. You should always point this out in your videos when you show or talk about the batteries.

Hi Tom! Yeah, I like the full suspension and SUV setup with rack, fenders, and lights. The mullet setup with larger front wheel surprised me, but seems to be a trend for "best of both worlds" in mountain bikes. It's larger and heavier, so a bit slower to turn, but the lower attack angle smooths the ride out. It's just a trade off... and again, I was more surprised like "wow" because that costs extra and is kind of fancy. The size small frame has two 27.5" wheels, so if you're not super tall, that could be an option, or just swap the front wheel and tire out.

Ex vado rider here. TeroX is a really nice bike. But does anyone make a carrier that allows a standard Topeak omnirack quick mount to be fitted? Seems like a missed opportunity to me. I use my Topeak bag all the time. It has folding panniers on the side for when you need extra capacity. The quickmount makes it easy to switch the actual bag between bikes.

Great review, my wife and I are ready to get our first ebikes and this seems to be a great fit for us. However, my wife is 5'-1" and likes to sit more upright on a bike. We were first looking at the Specialized Como or Vado because they seem to have more of an upright posture. But the Tero X will fit our riding style MUCH better, specifically, we want the full suspension, etc. Do you know in the Small Size frame how much greater the "reach to the handlebars" would be, if any, for her compared to the Como or Vado?

However, I'm not in the market for a kind of "fitness/city" bike that can ride some trails(if you know what I mean). Would appreciate your feedback! Thx

Great write up and UA-cam review. I'm in the market for my first ebike and coming from two Specialized bikes already (Stumpjumper and a hybrid/fitness) i'm now older and looking for a single ebike to attempt to adequately tackle bike paths and some single and double track (albiet not highly technical). The turbo X appears to fit the bill but need to decide on trim level. I was wondering if anybody can comment on what I will be giving up in terms of performance between the X 5.0 vs 6.0 specifically related to, I believe, the inability to lockout the rear suspension on the 5.0 as well as 70nm of torque vs 90nm on the 6.0? Will either of these have a significant impact on performance in terms of efficiency, range either on or off trail, etc? I assume level of component quality between is similar otherwise? Just not sure if the extra $1K is worth it in this platform and intended use.

I hate dealing with a bike that has a rear fender that wraps that far down on the wheel. You snag the fender on steps and can't roll it around on its back wheel. Also makes using a 1Up style rack a PITA. I performed surgery on my wife's Como, but shouldn't have to. I don't care for Specialized's pointy kickstand and its "in the shop only" firmware updates.

If not sure what country, state, province you are in (looks like Arizona?), but if this is a class 3 bike should you be riding on that path in the video? I'm not accusing, just questioning. I was ready to go buy this bike but then realized the class 3 designation. Arghh!! The rules differ by area but I don't want to take the chance of being restricted in the future. From the Bosch web site:
"Class 3 eBikes are typically allowed on roads and on-road bike lanes (“curb to curb” infrastructure), but restricted from bike trails and multiuse paths. While a 20-mph maximum speed is achievable on a traditional bicycle, decision makers and agencies consider the greater top-assisted speed of a Class 3 eBike too fast for most bike paths and trails that are often shared with other trail users."

I think it depends on the location, but you're correct that generally in the US mountain bike trails invite Class 1. It's sad that the big European companies have lobbied in the US for a classification that gives their slower products an edge. In Europe the limit is 15.5mph (25km/h). It's easy to pedal beyond 15 or 20mph, especially when descending.

I know, pretty expensive, right! The high-end brands and top-spec bikes (like this being the 6.0 vs. their lower-spec 4.0) tend to cost more in general. Ebikes do things that motorcycles cannot, and vice versa... like ride on trails, don't require a license, no gas needed, no license or registration. Many non-electric bikes cost $7k+ just because of the engineering, materials, and branding. Furthermore, there are some motorcycles that cost $50k+ like the Kawasaki Ninja H2 R.
