As great as Becker was, and played that day. As old as Connors was. This was a match that, one could easily see, Jimmy could win if Boris faltered. He did not.

But he was beatable on clay, he never beat Wilander on clay for example (only two meetings but still). And Becker was great, the way he brought power into tennis in WImbledon 85 is among the finest moments in tennis.

@@dks13827 Yep, Wilander wrote in his biography that Connors always put 100% in exhibitions also, something he had a hard time doing himself. Also when he(Wilander) did his comeback in 93, he found it hard to focus on every point also in ATP tournaments. The problem there started in 89 when his motivation dropped a bit. That was a disaster for WIlander game who needed a sharp brain to work as he lacked killer strokes.

Nein. Insgesamt hat man das Tennis wesentlich langsamer gemacht. Grundlinienspiel in Wimbledon hat es mit Becker nur selten gegeben. Schau Dir mal Matches von Sampras an. Mehr Serve and Volley geht nicht.

Jimmy never beat Becker, think he was 0-3 against him. Age comes into play, but here he beat himself more than anything. Lot of balls in the net. Too many errors. I think he had something going on health-wise. He was not hitting the ball as cleanly as usual.

Nah...players grew to much bigger sizes by the 80s. Becker was a load at 6' 3". Borg, Connors, Vilas, all capped at 5'11". Then Becker, Sampras, Rafter, Cash, Stich, came along...which puts Agassi among the all time greats at 5' 11". He hit so hard that he competed well into the 21st Century against giants like Safin.

Jimmy was almost 35 and Becker was 19, there was an age difference of almost 16 years, which is too much for any athlete to overcome. Had Jimmy been younger, he would have beaten Becker.

What kind of logic is this? Nadal and Djokovic in their mid-30's have never beaten top 19 year old players at the Slams? Of course they have. Djokovic is not currently No. 1 at 35? Of course he is. Becker was a more complete player and would have beaten woman-style (Connors) if he was 15 years older.

@@Ajayk9099 He won because of his tenacity and fighting spirit, not because of his game, which was backward. Once complete players like Lendl and Becker arrived, even his tenacity was no match for them. Becker was no where near his prime in this match and clay was his worst surface, but Connors with all his experience still couldn't beat him. Why? Because his game was too one-sided to compete against an advanced player like Becker. I'm done with this argument.
