    Harvesting herbs which are suitable for pigs, chop and boil it, ferment it 2+ weeks. when feeding, mix with hot water to thin it up, added 10+% grains or whatever leftover for additional nutritions. Lot of labour. 1year for processing to 200+lb. The taste of the meat is next level.This info from my own experience when I was a child in China. I think that is the best way to produce meat-low cost, little resources required. The question is nobody experiment how to mass produce herbs for pigs(like grass for cow).

    I kept the same strain of pigs going for 15 years. My first sow's Boar father was a full Durock. I kept a rent-a-boar. For each sow Borus bred I was paid pick of the litter. Most pigs in New Hampshire in the 70's and 80's were yorks and landrace. One year borus bred two "wattle pigs" that was what we called them. They had wattles and turned up noses. I also charged one pigglet to nut all the males in a litter. I ended up with three "wattle pigs"
    I took them up to auction in the fall, hunting season, when many are looking for porkers to mix with the venision.
    That worked out well. They sold by the head not the weight. Those little wattle pigs fetched more than pigs twice their weight. People wanted those little wattle worthless pigs.
    I didn't keep any as breeders, they never grew well.
    I moved my pigs daily. They covered most of our 26 acre farm during the pasture season. Pigs do very well on skim, acorns, grass and the bucket under the drain at the local pub.
    I collected from the pizza place the IGA and two bars. I had a solar cooker for the slops on sunny days.
    Good luck with your little wattle pigs.

    Looking at you milking the cow, have you considered a surcingle strap with spring rod for suspending the milker (that's what the grooves on the underside of the handle are for)? I grew up on a small dairy farm, milking 30+ cows in tie stalls. Using the surcingle, the milker moves as the cow moves.

    I love your daughters bob cut. She has beautiful hair. I have been putting food grade coconut oil on the teats, cow and goat, to condition the skin. Living on the dessert they tend to get dried out and leathery or chapped with just the teat dip. This has been the first year I dont have any chapped, cracked, or wounded teats. I wonder if that might help Luna, thought I would share.

      Joanne Ganon yes they do eat grass. Weed em and reap doesn’t have much pasture. They keep all of their animals on just an acre because they’re in the suburbs. I’m sure they can’t keep all of those pigs in the pasture because they’d root a lot since they don’t have a ton of grass.

  • @moregardening5014
    @moregardening5014 4 роки тому

    One thing I will say is if you are going to feed the kunes make sure to limit it. With too much food, they just gain fat since they’re a lard pig. I fed mine 2 scoops of feed a day and raised them for a year. But I don’t have a diary cow yet, when I do I’ll be excited to feed the skim and whey to the pigs for sure!

    Take care with the milk..many over feed Kunekune and because they are a lard pig a very thick layer of fat results and the meat is not worth eating..done right , Kunekune Bacon or meat cuts are the best i've had. Ours get no scraps, just grass and windfall. huge selection of fruit n nuts. I finish them on buckets of plums..we nearly lost this rare breed in 1988..

  • @perkar49
    @perkar49 4 роки тому

    just remember, Kunekune are a Lard pig..we put nose clips in diggers , not all Kune are diggers.ours get grass and windfall fruit n nuts, used to keep Orchards clean and disease free. no scraps..nothing else, minimum pig nuts to train to come when called..butcher at 3-4 yrs. We also grow most of our own food. Living our dream.

    My dad home place had a ditch dump that encompassed about 2 acres of heavy clay gumbo soil he would plant a roasting ear corn patch and after the the corn we didn't put up or eat and it got to hard he'd buy some feeder pigs and a calf and put out on the corn patch the calf would eat the corn and the pigs would clean up behind the cow whole corn is hard to digest and the pigs would glean the whole corn that the cow passed.

    Thanks for the wonderful tips throughout the video! It's even a great peep-hole into cow and pig raising. My family raised both, amongst many others, but because I was in the city I barely got a chance to learn the livestock side. I'm not against it, just not set up for it. Maybe in the near future that will change. :)

    *QUESTION* How much are the pigs actually eating the grass itself vs rooting it up just to eat grubs, bugs & worms for their actual protein?

    • @moregardening5014
      @moregardening5014 4 роки тому +1

      Yes they really do eat the grass. I just sent 3 kunes off to be processed. They don’t root mouth with frequent moves. They eat the grass the first and then when they run out start to root which is a lot worse in the Spring when it’s so wet. I still fed mine pig feed, but just 2 scoops a day which is a lot less than standard pigs.

    Be wary of feeding to much milk our first two feeder pigs we got free day old bread and free colostrum milk from a comerciel dairy and our pigs had a solid two inch layer of fat over the whole carcass sur it was free food for them but the fat layer was too much we used to leave a slop bucket at our local green grocer who would give us all his bruised food and wilted lettuce and other greens that wergoing past their best by dates but the pigs loved again food fo free we also got scraps from nursing homes although you had to be careful with that because it is illegal to feed pigs slops with meat in them in Australia because we don’t have hoof and mouth here it can be in meat products like salami and other smoked meats as a lot of non commercial pork produces don’t boils the swill at a high enough temperature to properly kill a lot of the bugs that can be transmitted to your pigs so because of this we only got vegetables from green grocers which ment at one point we were feeding our pigs strawberry’s which they love and when ever any local farmers had a glut of a particular vegatable we would harvest it which saved the farmer from having to clear his fields himself we would dig over the last of his potatoes to give us free spuds for the pigs also we stripped what was left of his corn crop and because we didn’t care about it being gmo as we only fed it to our horses and not to any of our food animals

    You're smokin! Wild pigs eat vegetation all the time. Spend some time in So. FL. They eat fruit, rooted plants, grass and vegetative forage greens and they wouldn't eat it if it did nothing for them. If you stopped feeding your pigs grain you'll see that they will forage for themselves and still get big, just a lot slower.

  • @debbieb.8708
