I love how Shane asks questions back. Shows it's not all about him, that he's interested. A lot to learn here.

I love learning from others. Despite what I do for a living, I hate the attention on me. All of my ideas come from others.

I loved that aspect too. This began to feel like two good friends exchanging ideas / picking each others' brains. It was fun to experience. On that note: Tim, I (and many others I'm guessing) would be immensely sad if you ever left this scene.

@@benjerman4438has he ever suggested that he would stop doing this? Where did this idea come from?

@@yomain7227 Well yes, he actually said something along those lines in this episode. I'm not sure where it was in the conversation, but it was a general statement - something along the lines of "I have things like that ready for when I eventually move on from these current endeavors"... I may be way off with the wording, but it was something general along those lines, and I understood it to (very possibly) be referring to his podcasts, among other things.

    KEY TAKEAWAY:
Set rules for yourself, and then you don't have to rely on willpower.
My wife and I recently made a rule not to have any alcohol in the house. Now I only drink 1-2 glasses per week vs nightly.

Also, I've been dreaming for this episode to happen & wow... it's here. Two podcast GOATs for me. And it doesn't hurt that they could pass as brothers lol

Not to take away from Tim"s Dad's 50 lb weight loss success but IF people are using Ozempic (not saying Tims Dad is using Ozempic) I wish they would say vs. "I did ....". Basing this on a recent comment by Jason Calacanis. And then hearing JC on an entrepreneur clip that he cut out 500 calories a day.... without mentioning talking Ozempic or saying why now he was able to do what he previously had not despite years of attempts and all the $ possible to throw at the problem.
It is a conundrum....you don't want to discourage people for whom these drugs are not an option for whatever reasons but then it can perpetuate the mental aspect of "Why can't I do what others can?". FYI, I dont have this struggle because I have many strict rules with food boundaries for health and long term recovery from chronic food addiction. For me, there is no mental argument because it's not an option. Exercise.....was a loose rule and now a continual struggle despite my experience and knowledge.

moving constantly as a child is not a great way for kids to thrive. Not being able to get close to others, inevitably causes attachment problems

I agree with what they say about education here being too easy. Often they are lowering the standards to hit the standards. VS pushing or teaching people to hit the standards. This isn’t just with schools. It’s police, fire departments many businesses

I love thinking backward and asking myself what would a person who accomplishes this thing do in order to be successful and then asking myself if there is a rule I can create to do that. Simple. Easy. Effective. A more detailed conversation on different types of rules can be found in Clear Thinking: Turning Ordinary Moments into Extraordinary Outcomes on page 113.

  • @KeithMacKayHome

"Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast" -- makes sense to see this from military folk. I first encountered it in a Wilderness First Responder course as we were learning how to think through medical crises far from truly professional help...and it's also totally aligned with Shane's earlier point about truly defining the problem in one meeting, but deciding on course of action in another. Allocating adequate thinking time to the problem at hand is an under-appreciated strategy. It still pays to have a bias toward action -- but don't short-circuit the opportunity for reflection. "Sleeping on it" often adds so much value by allowing the subconscious all that time to bring up objections and improvements...sleep on it, then act. Thank you both for some great new strategies to explore in my own life.
