Anti-tourism protests across Spain continue despite economic growth | BBC News

- The Spanish economy has been growing faster than most of its European neighbours recently - and that's in great part due to its tourism industry.
Tourism contributes around 13% of GDP growth to the country's economy thanks to a model based on sand, sea and sun.
This year, nearly 100 million foreign visitors are expected - a new record - and not everyone is happy about the influx of tourists.
Anti-tourism protests have been taking place across many parts of the count§y, including popular destinations Barcelona and Malaga.

The military industrial complex , the insurance companies, politicians, the 1 percent, the healthcare companies are having glass of happiness right now. There completely off the radar on being blamed all over the world it seems like
They really are not
Tourists are absolutely apart of the problem
Mob mentality is rarely rational.

How? @@cremepuffle tell me how tourism is to blame?😊
"tourist go home" - ? Well that's literally the definition of a tourist: you go somewhere to visit and then you go home.
LMAOOO
😂🤣
Exactly, a tourist and an immigrant are NOT the same thing. Most people spend less than 2 weeks, then return to their country.
Fair enough, but lately, the majority of tourists have been behaving rowdily, and the locals have had it up to here with them. You want a country to welcome you with open arms, right? Then, treat the locals the way you want to be treated.
But all at the same time, and in the same months, causing a housing/hotel bottleneck and a hike in prices for exactly 3 months of the year, which then spews over into renting on AirBnBs (hotels too booked and expensive).
The result is a puddle of shit. I live in Spain, know what this looks like.
Imagine if your mortgage or rent got 3X more expensive for 3 months of the year.
....and during COVID the Spanish resorts were crying that they had no tourists coming over to aid their economy!
It are not the resorts protesting
It's impossible to fully satisfy people
@@Rezistenza1998 it's certain that the money generated by tourism would trickle down sooner or later to the pockets of the protesters. For example those who work in the food & drinks manufacturing industries, building and maintainace workers, bus and taxi drivers, food producers, catering staff, manufacture of gifts and souvenirs, restaurant owners and workers, tour guides, interpretors and Airport staff. I am sure that some of those protectors have friends and relatives working in such a capacity.
@@walboyfredo6025 so you say the government should enslave the country to tourist companies which have extremely low wages and destroys the country, and will completely fall when there is a global economic crisis. instead of developing industry and becoming self sufficient. Reliance of tourism means enslavement of the locals and sells the country out to the big tourism companies, it is the biggest destroyer of lives in Europe. Commercial tourism makes Europe unlivable.
Spain is a shit hole and very expensive. And full illegals
Blaming tourists is nonsense. Blame the politiicians for allowing so many landlords for renting out their properties for tourism rather than for residents and for not building enough affordable housing.
yes ,,,thats govt lack of regulation 😂 ,,,
I don't know what property rights are like in Spain, owners should not be forced to stop using their property however they want.
Spain being a welfare state and charging so many taxes, then to keep it that way the state should have houses for the population at low cost.
If you are apartment owner I cant tell you what to do with your own property. And renting apartments for tourists is totally legal, you could move to city less tourism if you can't afford it in a touristic city
Renting to tourists is part of the tourism industry.... nothing against tourists of course but if you stop renting to tourists, the tourism industry suffers as well The creation of Hotels also affects rents and price value of surrounding neighbourhoods ... you cant have your cake and eat.... im not Spanish but here in Portugal we have the exact same problem.... the bottom line is no country on earth that rely on tourism as its major or substantial economic industry, is actually a great place to live in... and what is happening to the south of Europe, is we see tourism rising and economy growths but the standards of living for people who actually live in these countries is dropping, while the cost of living has gone up substantially. To the point where that, genuine stuff and people that the tourists came here to actually experience, is disappearing because the native people are leaving the big cities and urban areas, because it has become too expensive...
@@mohammedhassan430They should put a limit. No more than 1 home can be rented out per household. If violated, you must sell below market rate.

This is mainly in south Spain and particularly Barcelona. I’m Spanish and I can tell you… tourists are not the problem!!! Check your gov in these regions..
I am Australian, but I love Spain and try to spend time there every other year. Barcelona is a vibrant city, but the anti-tourist thing has been around a long time, and the housing/Airbnb thing is just a pretext. I can remember going there in 1983 and seeing graffiti that said "f*** off tourists". My last time in Barcelona was in 2019 and it was more evident. So last year, when I spent seven weeks in Spain, I ignored Barcelona. I went to Cardona and Lleida in the north east instead, and also went to Zaragoza, Cuenca, Madrid, Malaga, Seville, Cordoba, Segovia, Leon, and Burgos. There are so many beautiful places and wonderful people in Spain, so if the people of Barcelona don't care for visitors it's their loss.

This is why domestic vacations have become far more attractive to me over the past decade. I'd rather see my own country than be around people who hate me being there.
As an Australian I'm very proud of you. Don't waste your money here, people definitely hate you as a tourist. Tourism makes previously comfy islands unlivable.

Blaming tourist were the real problem are politicians and law makers not adressing a housing issue.
Theres no housing issue when they inflate prices for tourism. Thats a tourist problem.
Yes sure. The politicians allow the tourists are stone drunk and politicians are to blame that tourists behavior. We can read it nearly daily in the summer in the newspapers. Maybe the politicians are to blame that tourists in some towns just give shit to privacy and occupy privat property. It is very easy to blame only ONE group. Politicians could do something about the housing issue, tourists should understand they are guests and should show respect. And the owners of houses ? They do the same as everywhere in the world : making profit. Who says not me is a liar.
@claudejeremiahgreengrassif you ask me you're the dummy here. Insulting without providing arguments. I live in a small town in aragòn and lecal farmers who lived here for generations can't buy houses for their children that are forced to migrate to big cities. Why? Because rich tourists buy away while only living here 3 months a year, so many towns are becoming empty. Only to see dumb foreigners like you who know nothing of our situation run their mouths while living in a different country
@@nelaVanBrussel What are the tourists doing other than giving their money to see this beautiful city? You should blame the politicians for stifling real estate growth like they typically do in all industries they have a heavy hand in.
@@kommisar. Lol politicians dont have a heavy hand in this, that's the problem. They are bought by the foreign investors that created this mess. Spain needs politicians that defend the interests of their constituents instead of foreign investors, and heavily regulate them so they cant buy up everything anymore. Im spanish, the problem arent the tourist this is a shame . However The situation in 2008 was very goood (comparing with nowadays). Im from málaga the average salary of low-medium class people in 2008 was about 1000 euros and the average rent about 300. Now the AVG salary is around 1400 but AVG rent is 1000. @@J.marrrrThe same is happening in every country. I grew up in Berlin and you could pay 200 Euros for a flat here. Now you pay for 35 Square meters sometimes above 1000 Euros. If you only earn up to 2000 Euros per month, there isnt a lot left for other things. But its not the issue of tourists coming to Berlin, we have a housing shortage and its the government in Berlin who is responsible for that. They need to build more affordable housing and change the laws that investors cant just come and take so much money for apartments. I feel the same issue is going on in Barcelona. Its a very nice city so of course many people come and go but thats normal in a globalized world. We need to react to change better and find solutions instead of blame others. Thats the secret of life. Always think ahead.
Ok, but they have a point in the sense that living in a tourist area sucks (myself living in one), if you are going to go buy basic needs like food or anything the cost is ridiculously high more so in Summer just to make tourists pay more and local residents have to deal with that and buying apartments or a house of your own is laughable, you can't simple as, you have to move out.
What I think is happening is that due to the higher influx of tourists in these months, the prices of everything have risen so much that it has reached the point that locals can barely survive. It's not xenophobia, don't be stupid. Yes, attacking tourists is not the solution but the basis of what they are saying is not wrong.
They were rude before the anti-tourism.

Indeed those are stupid leftish natives. I know how stupid they are.
those are left wing protests nothing to do with the current ones you can find those tags in greece too
immigrants would be leagues and bounds worse than tourists.
Tourists would spend disproportionately more money in the area and take up significantly less accommodation.
1 bedroom could house hundreds of tourists a year who bring money and spend it on food, amenities, services etc. But still only occupied one bedroom. A single migrant would occupy the same space, but also occupy a job of the locals and not be spending in the area nearly as much. Also putting strain on things like the education and healthcare sectors.

Crazy. Every tourist, including Europeans? Americans love Europe.
Average citizens care about quality of life, economy growth doesnt always result in better lives for them.
Well said
GDP growth translates to QoL improvement only if you are asset owner. Most of the people in rich welfare states are entitled and have high consumption rate (for their earning potential), and hence keeps on running on hamster wheel forever. Any welfare entitlement stops or prices rise, or even if they see others prospering more, they are immediately upset. One needs to understand, why frugal and hardworking Indian and Chinese migrants perform so well in Western countries.

The problem is Airbnb owners, Hedge Funds ...
That and the fact that the central government controls the port and the airport, so it's impossible for local governments to curb arrivals in any way at all.
Same in UK problem is not eu citizens but owners and goverment including home office !
Hedge funds are a parasitic abomination.
Hedge funds? I think you mean Private Equity. Hedge funds prefer more liquid investments, real estate isn't liquid.
Yes, and no tourists destroys both.
Went to Barcelona last week, none of the Spaniards refused my spendings there and told me to go home instead
Wow, what an intelligent comment, in Barcelona probably 80% of businesses in tourism aren't spaniards and btw even if they don't like you certainly they won't at least not taking your money...next time try to ask someone to help you out understanding the world
They need to stop short term bnb, I used to love them as a tourist of course but then it happened to my neighborhood and not I’ve seen the light, we should banned short term rentals and tourist should only book in hotels
But really it's not just Airbnb. It's just too many people visiting places which were never planned to accommodate so many of them. Basically you're visiting a place and most of the time being stuck looking at the back of the people in front of you.
In Mexican tourist cities like Cancun, Los Cabos, Nayarit, Oaxaca or Mexico City we are used to tourism, we have never attacked anyone who decides to visit us and everyone returns to their countries happy, I attribute it to a problem of idiosyncrasy, the average Spaniard is not very friendly, polite nor hospitable (I didn't have a very good time in Madrid).
I would love to go to Mexico City one day. I don’t know too much about Spain, but my sister went in the late 90’s for a travel abroad experience. She noticed that her Korean friend experienced a lot of racism there at that time. And also people around her and her friends kept complaining about how all Americans were fat (my sister is only 92 lbs she’s tiny). Actually she gained weight in Spain which made my mother so happy, but only momentarily as she lost it rapidly after a week back in the States. 😂

naahhh spaniards are nice. Let's remember that this is a minority of people, I'm pretty sure they are many spaniards that are quite pissed of about those protests right now. Including all the people that work for the tourist industry.
When we were in Barcelona in 2010, there was a huge protest against tourists. Spains economy is based on tourism and related activities like construction but they don’t have a very well diversified economy. The unemployment rate is 13% as I write this, the highest in the EU.
That's exactly why they are protesting, get it?

Spain is a country with rich history for goodness sake. It shouldn’t be taken advantage of made it an international resort for drunk tourists and tanning addicts.
Spent some time in Spain last year and loved it but... There was a fairly heavy volume of tourists on the streets of major cities that was very noticeable. Restrictions on short term apartments, especially in peak season, and limits on tour group populations in each city makes sense to retain the character and culture of this lovely country.
As they say, never bite the hand that feeds you.
I grew up in malaga, I went to school there and speak the language to a native level. I go back at least once a year to visit. This year was definitely the most hostile the locals were towards me until they heard me speak. One of the big problems they won't take into account is during the financial crises in the 2010s experts claimed they've built too many properties and had nobody to sell them to. The construction industry ground to a halt with alot of workers retraining as the news reported there were sufficient homes for the 35 years. Now they are struggling to keep up with demand and can't build houses quick enough.
This is the problem when people don't understand how economy works. A housing problem which is caused by landlords doing airbnb is now being blamed on tourists which are pouring millions of euros each year.
These people have no clue that if tourists don't go to Spain anymore then millions of them will lose their jobs and wont be able to afford appartments neither.
Finally, someone with a brain.

The problem is that rents are so high many can't afford them as it is.
Yep, Globalism

In Greece we have crazy economic growth but trust me, the average citizen is almost poor
Exactly... I live in Crete and my wife earns for 40h a week job 750€ included the child bonus you get every month. Our rent is 800 for 63 sqm and our electricity bill is 50 euros a month. Now the tourists doesnt understand that because they earn 2-5k € a month and live like kings here. 1 gyros is 5 € in Chania and the quality is almost dogfood. Tragic
More than 10% of Spain's economy comes from tourism. Tourists are coming to save a country that was going downhill. Why are you complaining?😂😂
We in Florida feel your pain 100%. The funny thing is that these tourist say things like "if it were not for us, you wouldn't have money to buy anything"..............................ignorance. As far as the growth goes, growth doesn't care about the natives or their lives. Everything the man says about the prices going so high that locals can't afford anything anymore, THIS IS TRUE. It's time for the local government to step up and do something. Not only in Spain but in Florida in the US and other places also. It's getting to the point where you can't even find anyone on the street that is actually from Florida and it's going to get that way in Spain and other places also. Those that think I'm stupid for saying this, live in places nobody wants to visit OR they are one of the tourist that never left one of the places I've mentioned.
As a spanish from Catalonia. I do not agree with this. It is not the tourists fault. Those who have been profiting from it are the ones to blame.
Turist brings money to the country and contribute to its growth. I don’t want my country to suffer, however, i also think that tourism should drastically drop so they can face the reality of what the country is without tourism. The economy would be much worse…
I have always said the way Spain does politics is obsolete and not the best one. We still got lots to learn.
I understand where they are coming from, however, there has to be a better solution than blaming tourists
Unfortunately tourists will be replaced by millions of illegal immigrants, who will have to be supported by the tax Payers, the hotels and probably air bnb will be housed by them ,then your country will really suffer, as they don't go home either. hope this don't happen as Spain is a beautiful country.

But Spain receives many, many tourists, too many. It is the largest, or second destination in the world. And this has its ecological impacts and the quality of life of its inhabitants. Money, economy is not everything.
Spain is a wonderful country to live in.❤🇪🇸❤
Targeting tourists instead of the root of the problem lol They seem very bright and practical.
Be careful what you ask for without knowing the implications.
I had been living in Thailand for many years - mostly in tourist destinations. Thai law restricts short term rentals for private property (rental period needs to be minimum 30 days). BUT, this law is rarely enforced. So in the end many regular condos are still offered on _irbnb. And the Thai locals are fucked up as well. Laws and regulations are nice but won’t discourage greedy home owners to offer them for short term rentals.
I was just in Barcelona and did not encounter any issues or witness these protests. I rented a hotel because Air BnB is often no longer a cheaper alternative and can be quite the opposite with all of the cleaning fees hosts have. I can empathize with the Spanish people though as we in Toronto also have a housing affordability and availability crisis which has gotten out of hand.
people need to understand that GDP growth doesn't always reflect on the quality of life for most of the population... As I'm writing this I noticed there is another comment saying the same thing, in other words.
I'll still leave this here.
Well it depends on what the goals are. GDP equals national strength. If a country is fine being not independent in foreign or trade policy GDP can be ignored.
@@bulthaosen1169 No it does not. The only useful thing GDP shows is potential for financial gain for big fish and to mention it at rallies. GDP has thus became a target, and consequently a bad metric.
If every third household started a backyard garden and feeds two neighbours and their own families (theoretically of course), GDP would plummet by 5-10% while starving children would drop to 0%. Or what about car fuel sales? They account for a massive part of the economy, but it's just a net expense for all businesses and everyday people, pollutes the environment around you, while all the money goes to fat fish in foreign tax havens leaving no jobs or technology or expertise at the source.
Welfare states that provide tax paid education, healthcare etc., often have more equity in high quality of life but these sectors contribute less to GDP on paper (see extremely high US healthcare and tuition costs). Same goes for other public services and wealth like clean air, public transport and I'd wager even national defense.
You’re right but people are idiots who don’t want to try and understand
@@DesignFIaw you do realize what you just said equals less national power right? The country and the individual are not the same. Otherwise Lichtenstein would be world power. Not US.
Well this video is not accurate at all. People are not blaming European tourists and of course it's not an Air B'n'B problem. The point is that the Government is allowing banks and big companies buy buildings and try to kick out people from their homes, no matter if they are old people with nowhere else to go. All those buildings, even whole streets, are to be overpriced rented to tourists, increasing the rents everywhere in the city and letting only a few places to live in. The protest is against the Government and I'm shocked that this channel is so sensationalist not to say the truth.
Cliched drivel. Tell me which apartment buildings are owned by banks? It's not their business skill. Stop being brainwashed into hating on business, just because they are an easy target.
if people's temporary visit gave you such frustration then what were you thinking while colonizing 50 countries??
I'm from Spain and also from Andalucía. People are not blaming Tourist, the problem is politicians, as always here in Spain.
In Malaga as a many other cities, Cadiz, Sevilla, Barcelona, Canary Islands. They are developing Houses to rent only for Tourist, because spanish poor people can not afford the rent for that apartments and there is not more houses.
So Spanish people can not live in our cities. The rent for Appartments could be 1000€ or more only for 15 days, and that a whole month of our salary if we have a work of 40h.
Majority of people we dont have that salary
