Narrator is a drug user. Dr Wu is his dealer. Katy is the drug, heroin, probably. That sax solo is wondrous, takes the song to masterpiece. Piano is superb RIP Walter Becker
Probably my favorite Steely Dan tune..thanks, dude... Katy is scag..Dr Wu is the dealer. Becker and Fagan were both English majors..they write narrative poetic stories for lyrics..and their musicianship and studio engineering skills are Impeccable...
It's about a Vietnam vet who is living in Miami after the War, struggling to beat his heroin addiction. Piastres were the currency of South Vietnam until 1978 (a holdover from when the French colonized Indochina).
Beautiful tune. I've read that Katy is a metaphor for heroin and its seductive yet damaging effect. "She is lovely, yes she's sly", but she lies and deceives. And yet, he remains obsessed, addicted to her charms. I believe that these were the demons that Walter Becker in particular was struggling with. Phil Woods was one of the most revered and awarded alto sax players and composers that ever lived. Multiple Grammy's. In addition to his straight-ahead jazz records, he also plays the iconic sax solo on Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are". The album is Katy Lied, and it's excellent top to bottom. The first SD album I bought. Thanks for your great reactions.
I would have bet that it was Steve Gadd playing drums here. Some of those fills were very reminiscent of the song Aja. But after a search, I see that it was Jeff Porcaro.
From what I've read, The Dan songs have meanings, but I don't bother trying to figure it out, I just enjoy the ride! I searched for your Dan songs, I'd recommend RM (No Static At All), Babylon Sisters, Gaucho, Green Earrings. All immaculate!
Dude you are spinning one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums! Especially check out the "resolves" when they switch things up the come back to the main theme! Nobody does it better than Steely Dan. My #2 Favorite, but I have two Co-favorites.
Sweet! The species of grasshopper pictured on the cover is commonly called a katydid after the loud, three-pulsed sound they make. "Black Friday" and "Bad Sneakers" are the two singles from the album.
Hi BizMatik! It's been quite a while since I've checked you out! I'm thrilled that you're reacting to Steely Dan! This cut is such a very cool vibe! Thank you! ☮️❤️🎶
Perhaps my favorite Steely Dan song. Thanks for playing and reacting to it! Dr. Wu is indeed a drug dealer and Katy is the drug. "Don't seem right, I've been strung out here all night. I've been waiting for the taste you said you'd bring to me" But I also think the name Dr Wu comes from the comedic Larry Niven scifi novel Ringworld. Not that he literally is the drug dealer, but Louis Wu is the main character who is kind of stumbling through the universe on a grand adventure. Becker and Fagan are great scifi fans. I just think the Ringworld books are right up their alley and the name Dr Wu just fits into the lyric structure so well. So when I hear this song, I can't help remembering various adventures and characters of Dr Louis Wu on Ringworld.

Jeff Porcaro was a drummer, even at the age of 20, doing almost every track on this record.
My favorite Steely Dan song. "Imagine my surprise when I saw you"
Phenomenal drumming.🎶🎶🔥💃🕺✌️🩵
20 yo Jeff Porcaro.
Probably one of my favorite albums from them.
Love me some Steely Dan.
Brilliance from the Dan!

Steely Dan has their own style of music and I enjoy them very much and they are very harmonic musicians!❤😊👍🎶🌞

Exactly! I tend to take music as a whole. If somebody wants piasters in their song that's none of my business!
This is my #2 album
FM, from the movie soundtrack
@@leonardshevlin7260 such a great track!

More Steely Dan! Awesome music.
The late great Phil Woods on sax🎶🎼💗 Doctor Wu-one of my faves
One of their very best. Their stories are deep and mostly true. They are occasionally personal like My Old School!

My #2 Favorite, but I have two Co-favorites.
One of my fav tunes of theirs lyrically, has the "implied rhyme" at the chorus "are you with me Dr...?" (Wu)

Some of the finest music ever produced. My sentimental favorite, I went to school with the Porcaro bros. Check out the Yacht Rock documentery.
👍👍Cool. 🖖❤
Phil Woods. LEGEND SESSION and live Sax artisan!
Their albums Never fail! Glad you reviewed!
Ready
Superman, Destroyer, Low Budget, Alcohol - all good tunes. Well, anything by the Kinks won't disappoint.
Great pick. Been awhile hearing this. Thanks

This was the song that hooked me on them.
Fantastic album. This song got me to buy it.
My fav Steely Dan song ❤
FYI "that stupid song" is Visions of Johanna by Bob Dylan- which is, in fact, an awesome song.

*Looks up - meerkat style* : Where did you hear that from Barbara??
