      Why are you listening the settings for the R Compressor. They are based on his incoming audio, and it is subject to change every single time you record something, ultimately rendering it irrelevant and useless.

    I love how Kenny breaks down the separate monitoring and recording tracks in this. Really similar to the workflow working with the Apollo console but he pulls it off entirely in Ableton. Actually kinda 🔥.

  • @lilwombat
    @lilwombat 2 роки тому +10

    The main thing about the latency track is that the monitoring is set to off if anyone is trying it. Also he doesn't need to record the track set to in since it's just monitoring.
    I record myself and I don't actually find it to be better because I was hearing it with the latency when I was recording so I already adjust for that subconsciously.

  • @tajbratton2961
    @tajbratton2961 2 роки тому +24

    There is a way to get around the “tracking” and latency” tracks for Apollo users. Just monitor through console and use console for your effects while monitoring. Then put your Ableton vocal chain on AFTER recording, for playback. Still adds a bit of an annoying extra step but this way you don’t have to keep track of two tracks and moving takes.

    • @mezcalibur7778
      @mezcalibur7778 2 роки тому

      you can do this also on an audient or discrete or almost any interface now

    • @chriskill6661

      Are you saying to basically just mute/unmute your vocal fx chain for playback?
      Monitor through console > record to track with vocal fx chain muted (in Ableton) > unmute fx chain during playback ??
      I’m just worried about hearing both console and Ableton signals at the same time.. are you also changing the track from “off” to “auto” each time you want to playback recorded takes?
      Hope this isn’t too confusing 🫤

    • @DEDBOIGRACE
      @DEDBOIGRACE 2 роки тому +1

      This is what I do in logic. It’s actually really convenient cuz I mix with a lot of UAD plugins and I have a bunch of DSP. So I can basically run the exact same chain on my interface itself as I do in the DAW. And both the monitoring and recording channels end up being 0 latency cuz the plugins are running on the interface, not the Mac. 🔥🔥🔥

    Just offering an alternative to his latency workaround in Ableton for anyone who may want a different option (I learned this from an Alex Tumay stream):
    Create at least two tracks, and name one of them "recording" or "tracking"
    Select them both and create a group
    Apply your vocal effects to the group track instead of the recording track
    Arm your "recording" track and record to that
    Use the second track as the place where you keep the good takes
    This way you don't have any effects on your "recording" track and the vocalist can hear their effects without latency (your buffer size/delay compensation has to be set correctly of course)

    • @HalfJoked

      You can do this easier:
      Put monitoring on your effects "Tracking" track.
      Create a new Audio Track ( CMD + T ) and put the monitoring off on that -->
      --> Arm both tracks for recording
      --> After recording just take the one from the empty effects audio track.

    Maybe a dumb question, but I noticed that in this updated version doesn't include a Gate Plugin.
    Say if Kenny theoretically was going to apply Gate to this updated template, should it be placed on the 'Tracking' (what the artist hears) track or would it be on the 'Latency' (no latency) track?
    I know that nothing should go on the Latency track, but for something like Gate I wasn't sure if that is an exception. Thank you!

  • @tajbratton2961
    @tajbratton2961 2 роки тому +22

    I’m going to attempt to explain the latency and tracking situation in a way that is more easily understood. Basically Ableton has an issue with its internal routing that allows the plug-ins on your track to affect your recording. So you’ll notice if you record with a heavy gate on a track in Ableton, it will just straight up not record the more quiet parts when in reality the gate should be POST your recording not PRErecording therefore it SHOULD have no actual effect on the recording itself once the gate plug-in is removed. Unfortunately Ableton hasn’t gotten their shit together so this or being a UAD user is the only work around.
    TLDR: Don’t record with a gate of your track in Ableton. Apply gate after recording and beware of Ableton’s ever so slight latency issues

    • @Fizzzel
      @Fizzzel Рік тому

      wtf the thing with the gate is just not true, the effects/plugins on a recorded track are never baked into the recording itself, even a gate. If you delete every effect on the recorded track it will be just raw (besides some latency if monitor was set to "in" as kenny explained). How do you get to your result with the gate? I'm interested :D

      @praxusjoon2478 sounds fun! So if you click the yellow button on the track it will activate the channel, meaning you'll hear the processed vocal. Simply deactivate the track by unblinking the yellow button. Your voice will be audible because of your sound card's direct monitoring of the dry audio signal, which will have near-zero latency. But you'll still get the reverb and delay from the sends as long as the send channels are routed correctly like in the above video. Hope that helps. I made the same mistake. If you're still having trouble just let me know how your two tracks are set up and what sound card you're using.

    Someone knows how to make this on FL or has link?

    • @goeighta
      @goeighta 2 роки тому

      I just commented this:
      In case you use FL Studio and want to do this:
      On the mixer, route one RAW channel to another where you want to put whatever effects you want, then unlink the raw channel from the MASTER channel and arm disk recording (dot button at the bottom of the mixer channels) on the channels you want to record, then hit record>play to start recording (it will be reflected in the playlist).
      Additionally, if you have a project with too many active plugins on other channels, it will be impossible for there to be no latency, and if for some reason you don't want to freeze all the tracks or render the instrumental, adjusting the track latency (clock button at the bottom of every channel on the mixer)>Set from>Master. This adjusts the latency and makes sure there is not too much latency.
      I hope it helps someone.

    Can somebody explain wtf a slap delay is?

    • @tonyc110
      @tonyc110 2 роки тому +1

      A slapback delay is a delay with a very short time, so it gives a slightly staggered doubling effect. Rockabilly guitar is a classic example.

    • @LokeyeMC
      @LokeyeMC 2 роки тому

      Thanks to Toni's comment below, it's looks to be a 32nd note on tempos between 75bpm - 120bpm. And then a 48th note for slower than 75bpm and a 24th note for faster than 7bpm. In fact a slap delay wouldn't drift into 16th note territory until you're above 240bpm in bebop land. But 60ms - 100ms is a far more direct way to think about it.

      yeah this setup confused me a little bit i'm not really understanding the difference, but maybe he's saying that the 'tracking' audio may be offset in the ableton grid (tho i feel like it wouldn't) so just to avoid having to pull it back a couple ms he just copies over from 'latency' track? dunno feel like i'm missing something here
