Love your videos Eli. I am starting my first job in IT on Nov. 26th after 12 years of lab medicine. Got my A+ and then got a job as a client technology associate. Learning lots!! Thanks!!
Please don’t stop doing the videos; it’s amazing how detail and simple you can explain it. Once again thanks very much for your help since there are so many people that want to "teach" but can't teach...lol and that is a true statement.
I've only seen 1 of 328 vids but your methodology, approach and presentation is great. Very professional. from a knowledgeable but frustrated home user. i.e. family tech support
Hi! I am started to learn tech support and found this video which is very helpful , you know what English is not my native language but i understood everything you said . Congratulations . Keep it up.
I don't often comment on here but I just wanted to say thanks. I'm taking Cisco classes in college and I've been stuck for two days trying to find the syntax for specifying number of hops with tracert. THANK YOU!
Eli it is very helpful this info for lots of guys that are getting into PC repair and networking. I personally have lots of years fixing pc's but my networking skills are on the floor. I think I have ADD, so it’s kind of difficult to focus and actually comprehend the information being thrown at you.
I love your lectures, they really help me better understand these tools and some of the tricks to using them. Thank you. Do you have a class on router configuration tools such as Telnet and Putty?
thanks man!now i know what really ping means.i can only hear it from our networking guy in the office.sometimes when i have no net connections,he tells me to just ping on the com prompt.thanks!nice tutorial indeed of the basics in networking.an eye opener.:)
great video eli now i know how to use 'ping' the correct way, and almost every body on youtube demonstrating how to use the tracertand ping command command think they can hack with these commands but i only us 'traecert' just to find out external ip addresses
Hello as you know I am a fan of eli the computer guy and love ping even so and of course what eli eli teaches. Thank you for that. Greeting from Thomas near to Hamburg
You will either have to console into that router by connecting a computer directly to that router using a serial cable or log into it using telnet (telnet is a command you run on the command prompt in windows). In either case you will enter the commands to setup the router through a cli (command line interface). Cisco routers are known for not using a web interface to configure it.
thanks man, ping and tracert is something old, but after watching this video i learned stuff i didnt know about pign and tracert, thank you for the additional info! :)
hey eli, its really great the way you present your videos. i have been following you for almost 6 months now...i was wondering if you could tell us something about python language. i am not looking for core technical stuff.Just info like why this language evolved and what all can be done with it, and how it is different from existing languages that do the same stuff, the market scenario for python and fields of application..it would be a great help.. thanx
Hey man i got a geek squad warranty for two years from best buys when i was buying my windows hp. and one month later my hard drive failed and i ship my computer to geek in best buy and 3 months later our computer was shipped home and i start to use it but the problem was that the wireless connection bar was not showing any networks on my area.so i want to do research, that point of time i was 12 years old and i had no experience in computer stuff , but there was nothing stating about my problem, the reason why i was doing research is because it takes long time for best buy to look for the problem inside a computer or Technology. So I opened up the computer part and found out a little wire popping out so i connected it to chip that does the network searching. so from that day i got into computer stuff and know i fix my neighbors computers for free and sometime they get mad at me for not taking money from them, a'm like a geek i fix everything. I will make a video and send it to you eli please make a video on what you think about this article. Please reply man
Please reply because I am very in a critical situation that I am trying anything that's possible to avoid making a mistake getting into a field that I spent 2-4 years of studying and starting the job ending up not liking it than I have no choice to go back going crazy. So tell me is this field for me? I don't like math is there math involved in this at the job when starting? can I study only an associate degree and land a good job with a decent salary? is the job active do you talk to people?!!!!
Thanks for the video, very helpful. Pls i have a problem but not related to this video. I'm connected to internet via WiFi, the icon at the down right corner of my screen is NOT showing the network strength as usual, instead it showing the icon that appears when a LAN cable is plugged in. Is there any chance you can help me fix this problem? Thanks
In a local network, If you can’t ping a Windows computer by its host name from another Windows computer, then the cause is related to NetBIOS. Am I right?
can I use any of these tools to catch a hacker that has been relentlessly attacking me with remote access tools and gaining permissions on my network? right now I see 2 phones and another computer i dont recognize on my network..and thats just for starters....
So, Eli, how did you managed to resolve your dns name("test") with ip adress(192.168.1.5)? If I`m correct, than this kind of custom configuration is registred in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\host file ? AM I RIGHT?
hi eli, i'm having a problem here. every single time i pinged, i always get the result - "destination unreachable". i did a little bit of troubleshooting, which is enabling ICMP IPv4 Echo Request. After do that, isn't the firewall made an exception for pinging? but why i still getting the same failure? Thanks in Advance , hope you could help me out here^^
actually I am using LINUX machine and my computer is connected with the router in wireless connection when i am typing ifconfig(in linux it is same as ipconfig) it not showing the default gateway ip address and in my wireless setting 5 computer are connected so how I will know my router ip address?
hey man i am watching all your videos and they are very helpful although i have a doubt in this video is there any way i can reduce my ping i know it depends on your isp and net speed but is there any config where in can reduce my net ping as i am a gamer i get very high pings on certain servers.
Is it normal to have 7 loops when tracert to google.com Is google.com appearing as 1hr14s21-in-fl.1e11.net[173.194.34.129] to other people. As I once found my ip had been changed maliciously somehow?
I see on my network there is a deivce w/ no name or IP but a mac address.. Is there a tool to find an IP or host name by mac address? trying to see if someone is stealing my wifi
Well, you can not ping a MAC address. I guess you would just have to physically look at your network devices you have to see if that MAC address matches with one.
if you host file on your computer is broken it will not work pinging localhost but 127.0.0.1 will always work unless the TCP stack is broken which is a driver issue or network card is dead
Eli the Computer Guy I'm trying to ping my brothers Mac. He did a speed test and showed me his results. I have a 60Mbps, 3Mbps connection, and just wanted to see how long it takes me to send packets to his computer using Ping. Since I got the 60Mbps connection, I'm upstairs on the 3rd floor and am only getting 26Mbps, and have ordered CAT6 cable to hard wire my laptop to the router to get the full 60Mbps connection I'm paying for.. But anyways.. So basically, since I've upgraded from 15Mbps, and etc. etc. I actually have been learning or improving my understanding about networking a little better for the past 3 days.. I wanted to ping his computer, but I think I just read about online that I can't do that, because he's behind a router. etc. etc. Why am I getting request timed out when I try to see how long it takes my computer in PA, to talk to his computer in NY..? I did a tracert also on the IP address I got from his results from SpeedTest.net, which consists of 30 lines, some of them.. like 22 of the 30 lines consists of asterisk.. I'm sure when I get my CAT6 wendesday, I'm sure my connection will be very near the 60Mbps I'm paying for, and not this 26Mbps I'm currently getting, even though I'm getting 3.16Mbps UP, and a ping of 12ms when I test my connection on SpeedTest.net.. Can you help Eli..? I also know how to change the settings on the router, which all I have to do is type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar in firefox or chrome, and enter the password.. Which I haven't messed with anything in there, I only use that to reset the router if my wifi goes out or whatever.. which usually takes like 80 seconds to reboot the router.. btw, wow.. you must have a very long run of ethernet cable connected from your computer to your router, because it took 2ms to ping it.. It usually takes less than a ms to ping your router.. doesn't it..? At least that's what I gathered.. so far.. from what I've seen.
Great Video...I could not get Ping test (Home) to work or tracert yet tracert dsl reports worked. Im in Australia using System admin I do know how to ping say google.com & Im sure Tracert has worked for me before
It's not really 23 minutes on "ping" but 23 minutes of valuable troubleshooting knowledge. People are so whiny, and spoiled. They want to learn a career in a 2 minute youtube video. smh
Love your videos Eli. I am starting my first job in IT on Nov. 26th after 12 years of lab medicine. Got my A+ and then got a job as a client technology associate. Learning lots!! Thanks!!

As you know Eli, ping and traceroute are unix programs that were ported to DOS. ;)

While troubleshooting DNS, many people say that we should use nslookup not ping. Can you explain why?
Very clear ! Thank you so much :)
In a local network, If you can’t ping a Windows computer by its host name from another Windows computer, then the cause is related to NetBIOS. Am I right?

Type 'route -n' in your command line
Could you do more on tracert?
hey man i am watching all your videos and they are very helpful although i have a doubt in this video is there any way i can reduce my ping i know it depends on your isp and net speed but is there any config where in can reduce my net ping as i am a gamer i get very high pings on certain servers.
Yeah. You can also plug the data into your local DNS server and the same results will be achieved.
Is it normal to have 7 loops when tracert to google.com

Wait. Did you say we'd be hamstering ourselves if we don't use ping properly? >.
Eli when i use traceroute on my mac with an ip address I just get "1 * * * 2 * * * 3 * * *" etc. Why is this? And how do i fix it? Please help.
ping possibly got stopped by a firewall
what does first thing do?
I see on my network there is a deivce w/ no name or IP but a mac address.. Is there a tool to find an IP or host name by mac address? trying to see if someone is stealing my wifi

or you can use pathping which is ping and tracert bundled.
1:13 Either Bob isn't there, or he's been mauled lol. No, jk. Great vid Eli :D
Wouldn't using "ping test" use NetBIOS not DNS because "test" is not an FQDN?
great tutorial
thanks a lot Sir,
Good One.
Man you are really good thank u
Very helpful
Session is too long but its knowledgeable...like it ***
