Thank you so much for being as authentic as possible and doing research, as someone who is Japanese, I really appreciate it. This look is very beautiful, and you do it very well, and I believe you are honoring the Geisha if nothing else. You are an amazing artist who does amazing stuff with makeup, I respect and admire you so much. ^^ Contrary to popular belief, I do not consider this racist at all, this is not yellow face, she is not attempting yellow face at all, she is honoring a very respected profession, and did a lot of research. I have seen some pretty racist "Geisha" makeup looks, and this is not at all one of them.
If anyone has bothered to read the description, she says flat out it was an /attempt/ at something. She was /trying/ to get it accurate, by researching it and everything.
You know, this is the only geisha makeup tutorial on youtube that I've liked. You keep it classy and accurate without doing the costumey, almost "orientializing" stuff that everyone else seems to go for. Bravo!
@EllieLynnCollins from what I've read it's done to give the illusion of the face and part of the neck being covered by a mask (giving an air of mystery) and the back of the neck was (is?) considered a very sensual part of the body so painting it this way highlights it.
Wow, I am astonished, you look so pretty, like a marvelous porcelain figure, precisely I wanted to enter a competition with this kind of makeup, this is fantastic as a help. I wonder if you found a tutorial for the hair in UA-cam, I remember looking for one and not finding a proper one. Congratulations on the Cosmopolitan nomination.
You're absolutely right about the lips. Geishas were known for drawing their lips on very small. A very traditional Asian concept of beauty is for a person to have large eyes, a tiny nose, and a small mouth. As you said, very doll-like. (This is probably why modern anime is drawn so exaggeratedly.) [My source - the loads of Asian friends/families I grew up around!] Beautiful makeup and great tutorial! c:
Sheesh some of you need to calm down. Just because something isn't just right doesn't mean it's completely horrible. There are tons of makeup looks, hair looks, etc that are INSPIRED by something or have elements of it but aren't necessarily supposed to be the exact thing. I like doing geisha eyes and stuff like that but it doesn't mean I am an expert in it. It's just having fun and showing how cool the culture is. Some of you need to throw a bucket of ice water over your heads lol ;-D
I want to re-do this tutorial so at some point later in the year though. I've managed to find out a bit more information about the clothes, hairstyles and makeup (you wouldn't believe how impossibly secretive this stuff its! I've bought five books on the subject as it is and there is still so much I cant find reliable information on!) and the lighting in this video drives me nuts! The new version should be so much better! :D
In Japanese culture, the neck is a sensual area. The white makeup is a sort of mask for the Geisha, and exposing some natural skin adds to the mysteriousness of the Geisha beauty.
@MatildaLikesCake I use the as dressing gowns :) One was from matalan and the other one (the peach one) was from Thailand :) You can find some on e-bay :)
I adore that you did the neck shape! Information about Maiko and Gaisha makeup (or anything about them in general) can be so tricky because they're so purposely mysterious. I'm glad you took the time to do it right, though! Your work is always very appreciated.
This is one of the better Geisha tutorials I have seen because Geisha are supposed to be very SIMPLE and people LOVE to over work them. Great job as usual!
i absolutely love that you kept this so authentic. there are so many maiko/geisha tutorials on here that are "modernized" or whatever. i love love love this.
{Copy pasted from another comment} Shut up SJWs. This isn't racist at all, she is emulating an aspect of Japanese culture that is time honored and she is trying to do it the traditional way given that she is using what is available to her. I think you really need to read up on what cultural appropriation actually is because this isn't it. I wear African dresses because I have an admiration for African cultures and I respect them. Also, learning and being inspired or exchanging cultures is how humans fucking grow. Has it ever occurred to you that by engaging in such exchanges helps with combating racism?!
@bmybaby101 she did the geisha look pretty well. its fairly well and accurate for what they did before in the past for geisha, it doesn't look too costume which is what most ppl do for geisha looks. Geishas are suppose to be tone down and more natural looking than like... hookers haha. so I don't think its half fast its just accurate. She obviously did a lot of research on this.
I sure I've done a few things which are inaccurate, but in regards to the small lips I'm positive that I got that correct because ever book and article I read on the subject said the same thing :)
+Ladie Vortexa I agree. Also, being a geisha was an occupation. I don't get why people are being so up the ass about appropriation when this wasn't the whole culture, she is being respectful of it, did her research, and acknowledging that she is not getting it 100% perfect
Brilliant tutorial. This is one of the only Geiko makeup tutorial I've seen that actually demonstrates the traditional style rather than a modern interpretation. The way you did your hair is much closer to the Geiko style than I've seen in other tutorials. Could you please link to the hair tutorial you used to achieve this look? Or could you make a hair tutorial so we can replicate what you did in this video? Pretty please?
Thank you for this look. It is amazing. It is so nice to see a makeup tutorial that really looks into the traditional applications and image of the Geisha/Maiko Makeup.
@47nicknack The official maker of geisha brushes is Hakuhodo, which sells the brushes online along with their regular makeup brushes. The brushes are more pricy than your basic drugstore brushes (and it makes sense as they are specialized brushes and handmade), but you have to realize everything a geisha "owns" is expensive from the undergarments they wear to the adornments in their hair.
@1neige2 If you pay really close attention to the geisha in Tokyo, you'll notice that they completely cover the back of their necks, but the geiko and maiko in Kyoto have the shape to keep the makeup out of the hairline, as well as to accentuate the beauty (not sexual aspect) of the long neck. :)
@GabbyBernedo It was for the kimono it dips at the back of the neck so it shows skin.Back when there were geishas it was a sexy thing for the guys to see the contrast of skin color and the shape of the design on the back of the neck.Since there were only a few places a geisha could show skin the neck was a really important place.
@tamakifan The foundation is applied on the back of the neck in that style because it is deemed to be aesthetically pleasing and it is applied so low because Maiko and Geisha style the neck/collar of their kimonos lower than is worn by other japanese. women! Long answer hope this helps!!
Well I read her video description. Turns out she has researched into the background of things, but this look is what she prefers. Also may I quote: "Ideally in a year or two I would like to re-make this tutorial, this time using the proper brushes and makeup and also do a blog post going with the tutorial talking about each item, their history and interesting facts, but for the moment I hope you like this one :)" Just enjoy the video.
this was so inspiring to watch... i loved the part when you were doing your back. the shape was just beautiful and so eccentric. the full look all together just.. agh... you amaze me girl. :) congrats on your nomination!
close enough. So far you are the only one who at least pay attention to details. Some people think painting the face white and put red here and there on a face is Geisha/Maiko make up. So ignorant. But I love the fact that you are respectful to the real Geisha and Maikos and I love you. You are the BEST.
wow I always love your videos, simple bocz of your makeup skills and your photography skills are just pefect together, love love love the last photo, seriously amazing!!!
@512AliN I won't be able to have perfect lighting till I find a new place to record (I record right in-front of my window) hopefully I'll be able to get the lighting perfect in a few months :)
that's right! You know what? I've been searching for this make up tutorial for sooo long! Thank you so much! Where did you get the kimono? It's gourgeous! :)
I love your make up and style :D Klaire you could inspire the most depressed of people by your work. I love it so much and i love how inspired and how much positive energy you give off in your videos its just so amazing. You have inspired me and many others in so many ways. Keep up the perfect amazing work you do,and never give up your dreams. :) :D
Klaire, I absolutely love your videos and was thrilled to see this tutorial, thank you! IThis subtle geisha look will be perfect for Halloween...pretty and simple. Some of your work was washed out due to the lighting( especially when you're applying foundation). I don't intend to be a master of pointing out the obvious, but it looks like perhaps the highlights/saturation/lighting could just be adjusted during editing in FCP(or the like) and the video would sharpen up?
I think she did a beautiful work, I see nothing racist about wanting to celebrate a beautiful culture and it’s beautiful traditions.I for sure will try this tutorial.
@47nicknack They don't use any specific 'geisha' brushes. There's an old video of an actual Geisha preparing her makeup and she just uses regular brushes, what look like paint brushes.
Where do you recommend buying the Kryolan White foundation? I really really need some for photoshoots. Thank you! This video is great and I love that you did traditional geisha.
The hair is really cute how did you get it like that? The whole tutorial is adorable :) How do decide on music to go with your videos? Music always matches so well!
haha i really do enjoy the videos that you make i love mostly ALL of them xD btw, is e.l.f a good cosmetics brand? because I was about to order some stuff online but my mom told me I shouldn't since they asked for too much info. and also cause we never used it before keep up the good work! :DD
Klaire, I'm thinking about creating a cosplay of geisha, and I'd like to use your techniques. But I wanted to know... how did you do this hairdo? I simply love your videos, I watch them very often here in Brazil!
This is so beautiful! You do such a good job with getting clean lines on the edges of your lips, how do you do that? Also, do you like Doctor Who? You look a lot like one of the actresses in one of the episodes. :)
@piggsflye , May I suggest mixing it with a bit of moisturizer? It might go on smoother. Hope that helps! p.s. I love the tutorial Klaire! Very simple yet beautiful!! xD
@GabbyBernedo The reason for the "stripe" on the back of the neck is basically to represent the class of the geisha/maiko. When there is a 'U' curve on the back of her neck, it means she's a maiko, a beginner entertainer. But when she has a 'W' formation, it means she has had her mizuage and is now a geisha, a higher class performer and she is going to graduate from her househould to become a woman and get married. @AnonymousBlacksheep ... Those really elaborate Geisha hairstyles are actually wigs. Because they are so elaborate, its simpler just to have a wig made, or with many older Geisha, have as many as her station will afford her.
The Geisha tradition began in times with no electricity. They used the white foundation to reflect the candlelight, so the customers could admire their beauty allthough the light wasn´t very bright.
Did anyone else notice her kimono was wrapped in the wrong direction? It should be left over right the way you're wearing it would signify that you're dead
SweetDragoncandy yes it's Halloween but it's also someone's culture. I'm sure it would be appreciated if it was at least done as accurately as possible with the known meaning behind it.
Stephanie Riggsbee I was referring to the wrapping of the kimono. I meant that it is probably wrapped like you would do for a dead person because it was for halloween :)
+Stephanie Riggsbee I know you commented this forever ago (but I'm just now seeing this video) most japanese people wouldn't mind to much if they saw her wearing it incorrectly, They'd likely just tell her what wearing it the way means, and show her how to properly wear it. The japanese honestly aren't as concerned with people mucking something up as we are in the west, most would be overjoyed if more people even tried things from japan
@KlairedelysArt I'm also really Tan. I used to be tan-yellowish, but now i can't go back to my original colour. Could you make some tutorials for tan skins???
Just to clarify, yes, there were prostitutes that did dress up as geisha, but they are called Oiran or Tayu. Maiko's are like apprentice Geisha's and they are both trained in traditional dances, tea ceremonies, and musical instruments. They also play the part as hostesses for events. Oiran's have their obi tied in the front and have insane amounts of hair ornaments and layers of clothing. Its really easy to tell them apart. :)
@GabbyBernedo The strips of exposed skin is like showing your ankles in middle times, if you've even see Memoirs of a Geisha it explains this in the movie.
I don't mean to be critical of your comment or anything, but the color only on the bottom lip is if the maiko has been a maiko for less than a year. After a year of being a maiko, she is to wear the color on the top lip as well. :)
Thank you so much for being as authentic as possible and doing research, as someone who is Japanese, I really appreciate it. That's the problem with working with natural daylight in England. Planning on re-doing this tutorial at some point this year :)
@crimsonbutterflies The one under the peach one was from matalan and the other one was a present from my mum. I think she bought it from ebay :)
I want to re-do this tutorial so at some point later in the year though. The lighting is too bright to see what she's doing.
yeah
@bmybaby101 This the the Maiko look, I have plenty of other arty looks for the future.
+Ladie Vortexa I agree. Also, being a geisha was an occupation. I don't get why people are being so up the ass about appropriation when this wasn't the whole culture, she is being respectful of it, did her research, and acknowledging that she is not getting it 100% perfect
Geisha *inspired*
Leave her alone.
I don't care if you're white, you look amazing and please ignore what others are saying.
I can't tell you how awesome you are for actually doing the proper research for this makeup :)
This makes me want to go watch Memoirs of a Geisha! Great tutorial, love it so much!
@princsscassie1997 That's the name of the brush so that's what I called it in the tutorial :)
Wow your the most precise Geisha tutorial I have seen from someone that isn't a traditional do it Japanese person, I really like it :)
Brilliant tutorial. This is one of the only Geiko makeup tutorial I've seen that actually demonstrates the traditional style rather than a modern interpretation.

You are the first guru I've ever seen to do the spot on the back of the neck!! How awesome! :) Love it, as usual!
love this amazing artwork. Foundation is truly the key. And the lip is just perfect.
@Nuuyu No I didn't use any mascara :)
That's the most acurate geisha makeup tutorial i've seen so far! You must be proud!
Thank you for this look. It is amazing. It is so nice to see a makeup tutorial that really looks into the traditional applications and image of the Geisha/Maiko Makeup.
You do not know how long I have been waiting for this.
@47nicknack The official maker of geisha brushes is Hakuhodo, which sells the brushes online along with their regular makeup brushes. Geisha and Maiko makeup are different tho...
she most likely doesn't care
Hi Sehun-ah, how is the rest of your group :D ?
she created a make up which includes elements of both.
RainKeehl its clearly said maiko make up!
RainKeehl She clearly had the video at the beginning say, "Maiko Makeup".
@TheAmimies I don't have one and I don't want one at the moment so it's all good :)
@SaphireMonroe Lol. My sisters say I have an E.T. neck :)
@tamakifan The foundation is applied on the back of the neck in that style because it is deemed to be aesthetically pleasing and it is applied so low because Maiko and Geisha style the neck/collar of their kimonos lower than is worn by other japanese. women! Long answer hope this helps!!
Thats very tiny and simple!!! Amazing that you got such an effect with that little eye Makeup!!!!
I think this is the best geisha look I've seen yet :-) Great job, Klaire!
You should redo this soon! It's been so long. Beautiful job!
I love how Klaire's viewers really stand up against haters. You guys are awesome! She certainly deserves it. (:
Congrats !!! happy for you!! you deserve it! you are very Talented!
This is a great video. I think you really have the geisha makeup down perfectly!
You do realize that Maiko only have lipstick on the bottom lip for the first year right? You just did a tutorial for a Geisha.
ECCO PINK Just first year maiko do that
Sarah Vargas I know, that's what I said

the most authentic geisha/maiko make up tutorial i've seen yet
Congrads! The makeup that you did looks fantastic!
It's actually two dressing gowns layered over each other :)
wow I always love your videos, simple bocz of your makeup skills and your photography skills are just pefect together, love love love the last photo, seriously amazing!!!
I liked it a lot! You did a good and I can't wait until you do it again.
@512AliN I won't be able to have perfect lighting till I find a new place to record (I record right in-front of my window) hopefully I'll be able to get the lighting perfect in a few months :)

Oooooo pleeeeeeeeeease do another video😊 I looked in the video description and saw that you wanted to do another updated video😄😄😄
YAY! i feel proud knowing i already voted for you in the cosmo contest :)
Klaire, I absolutely love your videos and was thrilled to see this tutorial, thank you! IThis subtle geisha look will be perfect for Halloween...pretty and simple. Oh I am so happy to see an make-up artist that actually did some research on maiko's make-up.
Its been two years now (sort of) so would you re do it again! :-D loved it - beautiful
@47nicknack They don't use any specific 'geisha' brushes. There's an old video of an actual Geisha preparing her makeup and she just uses regular brushes, what look like paint brushes.

i love this tutorial.
u r really good at doing these makeup art tutorials:)
Oh my god i love this! I love geishas and for you to do this tutorial makes me so happy!
The hair is really cute how did you get it like that? The whole tutorial is adorable :) How do decide on music to go with your videos? Music always matches so well!
great job !!! looks very misterious and beautiful
lovely tutorial!!! I appreciate it a lot that you were going for the original look instead of just doing something geisha-ish XD have a nice day! :)
haha i really do enjoy the videos that you make i love mostly ALL of them xD
btw, is e.l.f a good cosmetics brand? because I was about to order some stuff online but my mom told me I shouldn't since they asked for too much info. and also cause we never used it before
keep up the good work! :DD
Klaire, I'm thinking about creating a cosplay of geisha, and I'd like to use your techniques. But I wanted to know... how did you do this hairdo?
I simply love your videos, I watch them very often here in Brazil!
@NizziRandomz geisha paint the shoulders, neck, and back when they do their makeup
I love it! I would like to see the hair tutorial! This is lovely! ♥
amazing! you actually did the fine details :) so good!
Loved this look , you made it look great and very spot on as well x doing the back on the neck must of been hard lol x x love it =)
This is so beautiful! You do such a good job with getting clean lines on the edges of your lips, how do you do that? Also, do you like Doctor Who? You look a lot like one of the actresses in one of the episodes. :)
Great job Klaire! very accurate in every aspect,I especially love the lips. :)
Awesome ! I just planned to do this make up for my school party, where did you get this amazing kimono :D ?
I dont care if they were allowed full lips or just lower lip i think u look amaaaaaazzziiinngg good job!!

Did anyone else notice her kimono was wrapped in the wrong direction? It should be left over right the way you're wearing it would signify that you're dead
+Stephanie Riggsbee Well this video IS in the halloween playlist.. :D
SweetDragoncandy yes it's Halloween but it's also someone's culture. I'm sure it would be appreciated if it was at least done as accurately as possible with the known meaning behind it.

You look so great with concealer/foundation on your lips, suits you very well (:
great tutorial, You have to be one of the most beautiful people i have ever seen in my life!
@Jojeeh adding it in the description box now :)
Klaire whereabouts in England do you live? I would LOVE to take some photos of you in your different makeups... So amazing.
this is gorgeous as always ms klaire!!! i love it!! i would have NEVER been able to do that design on my back!!! lol! im just not that coordinated :P
You're quite amazing... Great talent and very nice explanations. I hope to see more from you ^^
@KlairedelysArt I'm also really Tan. I used to be tan-yellowish, but now i can't go back to my original colour.
