+EricArceneaux I have a question. Do i have to breath always like that while i am singing? Because its very hard to do it while i sing and it makes me tired.
as an amatur singer ive searched alot IF YOU SEE THIS, KEEP WATCHING HIS VIDEOS THIS DUDE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT! helped me alot so thank you for all that good work =)
Yes. It is a VERY good idea to focus on this 2wks-1month, before moving on to the next vid. Of course, everyone is different. But many people encounter problems simply because they move ahead before their bodies are truly ready. Remember: If any particular element feels difficult to u now (ex: expanding the back), that doesn't mean to get frustrated and quit. It just means that your body needs more time. Patience is critical for success with this. So I thank u for posing that question.
0:11 intro talk stating should breathe low and talking about how diaphragm moves. 3:24 abdomen exercise - hand on stomach breathe in (hand should move out). Make sure to keep shoulders stable and relaxed. 5:17 back muscles exercise 7:55 intercostal muscles/rib cage breathing exercise
It's simply a matter of practice. You're asking your body to engage muscles that you haven't made full use of since you were a baby. It takes time to redevelop them. Be patient, and remain consistent with your practice.
I am a classical singer, lyric coloratura soprano and these are some of the best instructional videos I have seen on breathing. I am glad I found them. Also your vocal warm-ups for opening up the voice are great for both beginners and seasoned singers alike. They are good for any singing style to release tension in the neck and upper body and to learn to sing in a full unforced and focused way. Thank you! I am going to refer to these often.
Hey man, It's been a year since I started singing and I found out I was a counter tenor! Correct breath support along with an open throat really works. It just takes time for you to develop that coordination. For new singers do not give up. This is half the battle. Once you figure out this then you need to do lip trills constantly. You can't get mixed tell you get a connected voice which takes a lot of effort. It's not going to happen over night. You also got to learn how to control your pharynx as you go up in pitch which is actually going down. That's a big secret but you didn't here that from me. Never reach for any note! Not even the low notes. If you do this is your neck muscles engaging which isn't your real voice. Your real voice is in the center behind all your fake voices. A weird concept to grasp but once you find it you might cry like me lol.
Asthmatics often do have a harder time with this, initially. However, these breathing exercises can work wonders, over time, in alleviating asthma symptoms. Just be sure to check with your doctor before doing intense breathing exercises, if your asthma is severe.
I have searched throughout youtube for instructional videos that is easy to understand how to breathe properly from the diaphragm and most were just saying that your stomach has to expand and your back muscle but that's it. They didn't go more in depth about it which is why I find this video very helpful because it's easy to understand even if you're an amateur. I will definitely use this to help me. Thank you for this awesome video.
Shi-fiddle sticks. I love the way you connected with us so freaking fast!! I'm such a beginner at singing, and what you did with the breathing (shoulders going up) caught me off guard! You're awesome!
Eric, I have Scoliosis & it tends to be very difficult to keep my back muscles working when breathing. But I'm working on it of course, I am grateful for all the love you offer to the world in your videos.❤
if your struggling to expand your BACK tense you lower abdominals (ABS) then use the same technique you did to expand your belly but make sure you keep your abs tens NOTE don't tense them to hard because it wont work. your welcome
Eric, I’m not sure if you’ll see this, but I wanted to thank you. I’ve been singing for years (no formal training, just a love for singing and songwriting) but never shared publicly until a couple of years ago. And while I enjoy writing and singing music for people to enjoy, it’s been so hard because I’ve always lacked confidence and have struggled greatly to have the strength to sing for longer periods of time. This has held me back from opportunities I’d love to take. After watching this video, something clicked for me. My breathing has improved drastically and I find myself significantly less strained than before. Your teaching has been a game changer and I am SO grateful! I wish I would’ve seen this 7 years ago when you posted it, haha!
The very short clip of the teacher singing at the beginning feels like mystical communion to me. It's strange to think of someone manipulating all of these muscles and techniques while sharing something so emotive, so sweet and seemingly effortless.
I've been doing the breathing exercises from this video, and vocal exercises and warm-ups for only three or four days now, and I can't already feel the improvement Definitely watch the whole video and all the others, at least on this topic This is the first thing that's actually helped me with my voice properly Thank u SO much EricArceneaux Stay awesome
I experienced a Lacunae Stroke 13 weeks ago. Right-sided weakness was my major symptom, speech was hardly affected, singing vocals disappeared. I'm a Singer,a Preacher, a Lyricist and an Nurse Educator. I need my vocals. After 13 weeks,my chance to be a voice Student arrived!! Taking care of me now is my focus. The Lord has given me a second chance to give Him glory! I walk,I talk and I will sing better than before. Eric is a GIFT. Thank you Coach Eric."Old Mac Donald" sounds better. That's' the song I chose to compare. Yah- Yah is my challenged, but not for long. Glory to God!!!! Saturday morning Voice Lessons Yes!
This young man has delivered one of the best and most honest explanations of healthy breathing that I have seen on the internet. I was particularly impressed that he stressed the fact that the lungs are actually quite high but with the correct breathing it feels "AS IF" the air goes low. It's astonishing how many supposed vocal gurus miss that simple fact, so well done for your integrity. One important fact is missing though and it is VERY IMPORTANT. Men breathe IN differently from women. They truly do. Both sexes breathe out in exactly the same way. When you demonstrated how to breathe you have a perfect demonstration of a healthy male taking the correct breath for good voice production; so all you male singer's out there COPY HIM and do the exercises. Now FEMALES pay attention! As a man breathes in the wall of the abdomen protrudes THEN the ribs expand precisely as described and demonstrated. When a woman breathes in the diaphragm descends (causing the abdomen to protrude slightly) and AT THE EXACT SAME MOMENT the ribs expand sideways. So, in a man it's a double action, 1: diaphragm down THEN 2: ribs expand BUT for the female it's a single action, the diaphragm descends AS the ribs expand. This is MOST IMPORTANT and should NOT BE OVERLOOKED. If a woman breathes exactly like a man after a number of years the tone becomes hollow (hooty) and will eventually wobble. So ladies, practise scrupulously 1 AND 2 as your breathing and leave the men to do 1 THEN 2. Apart from this, this is a truly great lecture of honesty and integrity free from loathsome cheap gimmicks. Well done.
Eric Arceneaux is so great. I'm taking voice lessons with an in-person instructor and watched 5 or 6 of Eric's UA-cam videos just for practice between lessons. I noticed improvement that day. I'll probably buy his Udemy course (Phase I).
I will not lie, this deeeefinitely helped me. My vocal range grew after doing this exercise but... I have never burped so much in my life because of breathing 😂
Thanks so much, I am returning to gigging after 23 years need to do this daily for 2-4 weeks! I’m not a belting singer which some live musicians in rock genre think is weak .. want to combine coloratura with power and not lose my tones. I am 61 so correct form will buy me time to still do what I Iove.
Oh my god, i saw these videos series one day ago and I practiced, then woke up, practiced again and then I tried singing.... After some time, i felt as if my voice opened up, i never felt that sensation before, and i was able to belt high notes i always struggled with, and with no pressure on vocal cords that used to stop me from reaching them. I can't wait to see what would a month of practicing this make. Also I'll watch more of your videos after this for sure!!! Thank you so much, i watched breathing tips and videos before but i realized i was doing something wrong because they never worked. No video helped me like this one. This one changed my technique COMPLETELY and in only a day i sound SOOOOO much better and it's all thanks to you!!!!
I had an accident two weeks ago and badly bruised my ribs, just above the kidney area in my back. I could not take a deep breath without feeling like someone hit me in the back with a semi truck. Doing these exercises, while painful, have helped me heal faster. My doctor told me that it would take more than a month to start feeling better but I am already feeling much better by doing these breathing exercises multiple times a day, every day.
I did these exercises a couple of months ago and then found that I could actually sing from my diaphragm but now, I've been lazy and stopped doing the exercises so I've come back to learn again. :P
This is such a great video, as well as most of Eric's videos. He gives so much great and useful information, and it is such a shame to watch this channel filled with nonsense and spam-like comments from people trying to make fun of these exercises instead of actually sharing their experiences using these exercises and how they changed their voice. That gives such a non serious vibe to these videos, where in fact these are super serious videos and the information in them is life changing.
I'm newly subscribed and I've only watched Part 1 so far. But as an impatient dude who wants to sing beautifully, I'm finally taking the plunge and sitting down and watching an expert explain what it takes to sing properly. It helps a lot that you're suave af and have those looking-into-your-soul eyes. I'm gonna watch all 4 Parts, repeatedly.
The first 10 seconds is worth highlighting these points: 1) It shows Eric can actually sing, and I can trust his advice more than some other teachers that hardly every show themselves singing (e.g. Dr. Dan) 2) It shows him slouching shoulders forward, and NOT filling his belly up like a balloon, which is often exaggerated by singing lessons on diaphragms, including this lesson itself. However, he is singing AMAZING in this _non-ideal_ form. Which proves that you can sing great without standing or sitting up straight or sticking your belly out like a doof, and that those improvements are marginal at best. He is probably still using diaphragm heavy breathing, but you don't need to stick your belly out like a balloon to do that.
I’m a metal musician. Both drums and guitar. And have been recently looking towards learning vocals. Whether low screams, high screams, or even clean vocals, and all the places I have checked have said to focus of the diaphragm. This video helped a lot. Thank you
I have to admit, I've been looking at this video for quite a few months and never got the courage to click it (didn't want a certain someone to see I was struggling learning how to sing), but I'm glad I dd. After watching this and practicing a bit (four minutes, to be exact), I went back to sing a song that I always struggle on singing and actually did pretty well. Sure, I still can't hold a tune to save my life, but I didn't lose my breath in the middle of a verse, either. So, I thank you very much, EricArceneaux; When I get the breathing down pact, I'll be checking out your other videos and your website too. :)
....Really stoked about this. :) Just got through 2 songs with two sips of water instead of the whole bottle. Seriously, it's past 1 in the morning and I'm too hyped up to sleep now. Thanks again, because seriously...I'm happy enough to cry. People, if you haven't already, watch this and learn. Practice singing a song when you're done and I bet you can hear the improvement. :D
Thank you a lot for the creation of this short video and posted on you tube. I have aspergers syndrome with that comes a speech issue that I accidentally taught myself. From watching you're video I was able to fide the correct areas to breath through my diaphragm. Now I am able to breath a hole lot better, my voice sounds more clear. So, thank you once again.
This video has had a huge impact in me learning my vioce in the last 5 minutes than the past year of me teaching myself. This is very helpful.Music is expression of your soul and feeling. For me this is how I releave my emotions, so thank you EricArceneaux.
This lessons are such a big blessing to, i was so bad but over the time as am been following this videos from Eric has helped me a great deal.a million thanks
I actually got a really nice soothing sound and sang one line all in tune! (So happy cos it's a start) but.. I find that to achieve that I have to power through my diaphragm so much sometimes my voice just blows out and I get light headed after, anyone else got this?
you might be forcing your breathing too much.im not an expert but try to stay relaxed and practice breathing so when youre singing it will be like a reflex, dont keep air in or out for too long that worked for me i hope i helped in some way xx
Tatty_Eternal I have singing lessons now but yes its normal for beginners, but its not right, I was told personally I take in too much air cos I sing way too breathy so I've been working on reducing my air when I sing therefore I need less breath and don't get light headed :)
The video you made of your background and being so vulnerable, to share everything you went through in school to get to where you are now, is so inspiring!! Thank you, thank you, thank you so much!
At the Diaphragm-part at the beginning I also noticed a pain in the shoulders, when expanding the stomach. Isnt this crazy? How could ever expanding the stomach affect my shoulders? Did anyone experience that too?
I watched your video a couple of weeks ago (and subbed) but I couldn't find you and your videos and had to scan my full history again and found you! Of all the voice coaches on the internet your videos are the most helpful. Thanks for making them!
You have such a lovely voice. When I was younger and hadn't yet learnt about how to use my diaphragm. I'll sing a really long note full stop to the point I felt like I was going to pass out, and I almost hit a couple of times
Thank you so very much. I do know I don't sing from my diaphragm. God gave me a good voice, but I do need to learn how to utilize it. Thank you, and God bless you! I'm going to work on these until I'm able to do this fully and effectively.
When I was a kid every time I breathe my stomach expands so I got curious and looked at the others but theirs didn't so I changed my way of breathing. Now I'm gonna go back to that again smh
thanks for this. I'm not really a singer, my breathing just needs help and you explain the back and side breathing really well. I feel it helping greatly already
I just realised this week that breathing through the belly is actually breathing through the belly AND back. I found this out by myself earlier this week and never knew it because nobody has ever mentioned it to me. People always say breathe through your belly. So when I did that I often did that literally and when you do that you can sort of make your back stiffen which means that it won't expand much and that will mean your langs can't expand as much and you won't be able to breathe as deeply. I have often felt like I was not doing it right since teachers (like yoga teachers and singing teachers) are usually talking about breathing deeply through the belly and I often felt like I wasn't able to breathe that deeply this way. Sometimes I was able to breathe deeply this way and I know now that at those times I had not stiffened my back in some way and was therefore allowing both my belly and back to be able to expand and breathe better. It is mind boggling to me how I never noticed it and nobody ever mentioned it. Btw, grear tutorial!!!
how can I breath from back side and rip cage? they move just a little bit but I feel like I'm still breathing from my stomach. it is a little different from when I breath from my stomach but I don't know maybe I feel like this. but how can I understand I'm right or wrong?
Your videos are so helpful Eric!! I’ve always sung, but had no formal training, and bit by bit with your videos I am learning how to develop my voice further and care for it as well. So thank you so so so very much for all your help, it’s so appreciated ❤️❤️❤️

Lord that helps a lot! Thank you for time stamps 😁☺️😊
Hi is he breathing through nose

Love it. Counter tenor beautiful range and rare in the Male vocal register I'm a baratone love tenor range.
Thank you for this comment.
Are lip trolls the same as lip rolls?
These exersises invoke yawning in me. Not boredom, but like a reflex.
It’s the same kind of muscles as yawning... it does that because when your breathing is more controlling the invokes that reacting

And ur yawning comment made me yawn..LoL

wow best breathing lesson I've ever had! Your aura is beautiful--gold and light crystalline blue. thank you so much
This was really helpful! I always have trouble with my breath while singing--I'm gonna practice this =)
I'm newly subscribed and I've only watched Part 1 so far.
Guys please thumbs up for daily vocal exercise!!!!!
4:03 Stomach Breathing
6:12 Back Breathing
8:52 Rib Expansion
Brilliant! Clear, concise, on point.
Enjoy your relaxed composure. Raw talent freely shared. Praised be...
The first 10 seconds is worth highlighting these points:
1) It shows Eric can actually sing, and I can trust his advice more than some other teachers that hardly every show themselves singing (e.g. Dr. Dan)
2) It shows him slouching shoulders forward, and NOT filling his belly up like a balloon, which is often exaggerated by singing lessons on diaphragms, including this lesson itself.
Damn, the Lord has really blessed you.
Best voice teacher..... ever. I've been following your videos for years, and you have no idea how far your videos have taken me. So.... THANK YOU
hi my lung has collapsed twice and now one lung has been glued to its mambreen does this have any impact on the breathing exersises?
This video has had a huge impact in me learning my vioce in the last 5 minutes than the past year of me teaching myself. This is very helpful.Music is expression of your soul and feeling. For me this is how I releave my emotions, so thank you EricArceneaux.
I got the stomach and rib breathing down, but I don't know how to move my back muscles. I guess I'll learn how to do it in time. :P
This lessons are such a big blessing to, i was so bad but over the time as am been following this videos from Eric has helped me a great deal.a million thanks
I feel relaxed.....alot.......😌
Bro I want to say that you are the best vocal coach in the world....
I actually got a really nice soothing sound and sang one line all in tune! (So happy cos it's a start) but.. I find that to achieve that I have to power through my diaphragm so much sometimes my voice just blows out and I get light headed after, anyone else got this?
yeah I do!
you might be forcing your breathing too much.im not an expert but try to stay relaxed and practice breathing so when youre singing it will be like a reflex, dont keep air in or out for too long that worked for me
i hope i helped in some way xx
I did! Is getting light headed by breathing through the diaphragm normal?
Tatty_Eternal I have singing lessons now but yes its normal for beginners, but its not right, I was told personally I take in too much air cos I sing way too breathy so I've been working on reducing my air when I sing therefore I need less breath and don't get light headed :)
You will at first, but if you keep practicing, it'll feel completely natural :)
The video you made of your background and being so vulnerable, to share everything you went through in school to get to where you are now, is so inspiring!! Thank you, thank you, thank you so much!
What if you get light-headed a bit?
Rez i got light-headed as well
Don't overdo it just relax and you'll be fine
Thanks Eric, . God bless you, you are such a great teacher. I have been trying this exercise for so long and you just got me on it .
If I can only be half the singer you are I would be amazing :)
This is another great lesson. Thank you for helping me grow!

You have such a lovely voice. When I was younger and hadn't yet learnt about how to use my diaphragm. I'll sing a really long note full stop to the point I felt like I was going to pass out, and I almost hit a couple of times
My back is as stiff as board, I just can't get it to breathe
hey same.
Me exactly doing this now regretting ma previous decision 😁
Yo just wanna say thank you. I learned a lot from your videos and I do sing a lot better than I used to be.
I watched this and I was like... Wait I do this naturally :D
thanks for this. I'm not really a singer, my breathing just needs help and you explain the back and side breathing really well. I feel it helping greatly already
made me FART when I tried to move my back through breathing.
lmfao
😂😂😂😂
hahaha lol
ya need to tone down on that burrito hun
this cracked me haha
This helped me a whole lot! Thank you so much!
When breathing in, should I be using my mouth or nose (dumb question but really curious) :)
