- Have you been searching for basement rec room ideas? I'm excited to share my game room I created as a surprise for my kids this Christmas. I transformed an underutilized basement storage room into a rec room to hold a ping pong table, dart board and foam axe throwing game. The best part is, the ping pong table can easily be folded up and stored to use the floor space for indoor soccer training, roller blading, exercise and more when needed. I hope you enjoy these basement rec room ideas on a budget, which was completed in a week!

Thank you for posting, I think that many people will be helped and inspired. We have a home too small to have a space like this, but being armed with this inexpensive way to transform is still great! I appreciate the reality of not pre measuring.. that unedited piece! Great reminder there, haven’t we all had a moment like that! Our new project is our guest bedroom. Seven years in the house, and it’s needing painting again and an upgrade from a full-size bed to a queen. Also a gallery wall displaying our nine grandchildren.😀

We don't have kids at home, so we transformed our open basement area into half family room - half extra entertaining space. When the whole family gets together (20 of us) - we put up folding tables - cover them with linens and decorate for the occasion. At one end of the room, we found a bank of lower kitchen cabinets on Marketplace, moved our old refrigerator and an area for a trash can and it looks like it was made for this purpose. The cabinets hold our games and serving pieces and my husband put a power strip along the countertop so we can plug in slow cookers, etc. It works GREAT! Now when we have holiday meals, we have a place to all eat together, we can play games, the guys can watch whatever sporting event is on TV in the family room area, etc.

I totally agree with you, I too looked at Pinterest for ideas for my family room/game room and saw these lavish spaces No MAM! my space does not look like that lol😂our space is a pretty decent size and we made it our own and we love it and spend most of our time there. I’ve been wanting to fix up our basement for a couple of years, but our house is 100 years old and the basement looks very bit of those 100 years 😂 Plus I have been using it to store clothes for our 4 daughters, as well as toys we rotate, and of course seasonal decor. It also isn’t huge as it matches the floor plan of the original house. But I am inspired! Our kids are 3 months, almost 3 years, 6, and 8. I’d love a more physical play area for them- like an indoor playground!
Yes! A basement is such a great space for them to get some energy out. We’ve had unfinished basements in all our homes and they are perfect for roller blading, scooters and kicking balls around! No fear of damaging anything 😉
Love everything you do, but this was my favorite video! When our kids were in high school, we did a similar thing in our basement with a ping pong table, couches and tv. (And it wasn’t perfect!)And what we found, as I hope you do too, is that it became the hang out for our kids and all their friends. They had great times there and we didn’t have to worry about where they were all the time! (Their friends’ parents were grateful too!) God bless!

We had an area in our old home that I redid for a game / roller blade room. It wasn't big either but my kids loved that I did that for them and that to me is all that matters.

The way you wiped the paint off your fingers and onto the floor and your clothes is exactly what I do too. 😂 I kind of love having “painting clothes” that I just feel free to use to wipe paint on as I go. Much less hassle than carrying around a paper towel or rag for my hands, I never have to worry about ruining clothes I care about, plus I fondly look back at all the colors and remember all the projects I’ve worked on!❤️
It works so much better! 😆 otherwise I’d constantly be walking around trying to find my rag.

Yes, our finished basement is the room that all our unwanted furniture go to die. We play videogames there but not much else. We would love to make it a theatre/game room but theatre chairs are outrageously priced. Need to make it a room that we use and enjoy.

Once we get our kitchen remodel done. I want to clean up and declutter half of the basement space(only have a half basement due to garage being down there also) and help my hubby create his wood shop

Thank you for sharing Sarah! I love your message. Small projects are just as important as big ones. My husband and I bought our first home in 2020 and have been slowly remodeling and renovating it. It's not where we want it to be yet but with small changes and improvements, it looks nice until we have the funds and make it exactly the way we want it. I have to remind myself 'Rome wasn't built in one day.' It takes time to make a home. ❤️

I think it is fantastic use of the space! It works, kids love it, what more is there? To have one of those over the top rooms, I would be worried about things getting broken or whatever! Any kids or adults would love this to hang out in for sure! You did a great job!!

My daughter has an older home with a basement. 4 kids age 7, 6, 4 and 1 1/2. This was a great motivation to help her get started on renovating an area for the kids.
