German Bread Recipe | EU Politics Explained by Baking a Heavyweight Bread from Germany
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лип 2024
- Germany is well known for its love of bread and many different bread recipes. When abroad, Germans often miss their bread from home which is usually darker bread made from rye or whole grain flour. In this episode of “Baking Bread” DW’s EU correspondent Georg Matthes explains how to bake a rich and heavy “Graubrot” and what you can learn from it about EU politics.
Adapted from a recipe by Lutz Geißler, Germany‘s biggest bread blogger. Check out his recipes here: www.ploetzblog.de/

What type of bread is your favourite? Tell us in the comments!
I LOVE German breads! More videos on how to make German breads please!
Rogge- oder Dinkelbauernlab
I love rye bread with caraway seeds, pumpernickel, fresh baguettes, the bread rolls served for breakfast in Germany and Czechia, hearty high fiber bread, proper bagels (not the fluffy chain place kind, but the ones that are boiled before they're baked)... I guess I just love bread. I love this series!
Yes please!
Bauernkruste! Warm! Kieler Brötchen too!
Her triangle OF POWER😂😂😂😂
Thanks for making and sharing this wonderful recipe
Potato bread is still my favourite!
Great video, thank you :)
Can you please post a written recipe of Graubrot?
The measurements will be indeed helpful 4 me. Tschüss!
The politics part was epic😂😂😂🙌
And no added sugar. German bread is absolutely the best.
@Annihilate MAGA Cult Sweet bread is nice too. Don't forget Rosinenbrot!
Today I learned that honey isn't sugar.
some of the best bread I ever ate - and the beer's not too shabby either
Wow thanks for this video Idol. I will make this German Bread. My German fiancee born in berlin Germany. I'm. From Philippines.
Probably because people in my culture love euphemisms and use them quite often in various different media (helps to get away from political pressures and makes people ponder more deeply), I clicked on this video because of the title. I wonder how much of the Easter eggs within this one video I didn't quite catch. Great video!
where can we see the recipes for all the breads?
Hey Shawn Berlin, you can find most of the recipes here: www.dw.com/en/top-stories/baking-bread/s-47577851. This page will get updated with all the recipes in the coming months. Happy baking!
@@dweuromaxx Thank you!
Loving my German bread
hello! if I do not have leftover bread nor a meat grinder, can I use sourdough starter instead? Or what would you recommend?
@Rosie Burke That's all right to do, but make sure that before you bake your bread, remove some of the dough for a new sourdough starter and keep it in the fridge. Your own starter gets better and better over time - The dough gets more "character"! 😉
@@dweuromaxx Yepp, the village I grew up in had their communal sourdough from around the beginning of the 18th century. But unluckily the tradition of baking in the community oven failed in the late 1980's , so that killed that insanely tasty sourdough starter (literally). I cry for that ancient gem lost to us.

No problem 👍
Have you ever made Komißbrot before? Would be a very nice thing to see.
Ich habe meine Großmutters Kochbuch von 1890 und das reicht mir für Brot und alles anders der alten Deutsche Küche!

einfach Bauernbrot mit ein Glas Alpenmilch - Fruhstuck )
Kinda a shame that bread didn't go into a wood fired oven
For all those non Germans, this clip is Humerous and funny,
@Beaglefreilauf Kalkar Thanks for pointing this out..😉
You can do a great imitation of attenborough
I miss Germany for the bread
This video has some San Francisco vybes ,are you feeling me?
How long can you preserve it?
@Happy_Dutchman Since the bread has a firm crust, it will certainly be okay for a week. But make sure that it is stored in a not too humid place, best wrapped in a linen cloth or in a bread box.
@@dweuromaxx dankeschön
When you say "brown flour" do you mean wholemeal flour?
no , German bread is not only from white flour it is brown or dark we took Rye! ore same time Spelt. and do not exchange Sourdough (Sauerteig ua-cam.com/video/LFh5DfreaUM/v-deo.html) to Yeast it is the most imported because it gives you aroma and taste.
I am a German who has been baking her own bread for a couple of years and I have no clue either. Could be whole wheat oder rye flour but I've never heard the term brown flour before. 😅
I want that bread 🍞😍
@Vectoria h 👍 So, put on your baking apron and go for it! 🍞😉

Why fresh yeast and sourdough together?
@Edison Tian Good question! You need fresh yeast in order to ferment the starch and form carbon dioxide: it is needed as a leavening agent to loosen the bread. Without yeast the dough would not rise properly and would only form a solid lump. You also get a fresh yeasty taste next to the pleasant acidity of the sourdough.
I know it I am late to the party, but you do NOT need yeast for baking bread when you use an active and healthy sourdough starter. He will do all the work. However, if you are short on time you can always add yeast to speed up the process. With the help of yeast you will have bread in around 3 hours compared to the sourdough-only process lasting around two days.
Where can I get stamps made like that?
Looks like you can order them on a platform like Etsy :)
@@dweuromaxx thank you, I've been searching etsy I just cant find anything like them. Do they have a brand name?
Europese Unie elke dag nu lol! ''high brow'' als je het niet gebruikt verlies je het: hoog voorhoofd ik moet me verontschuldigen voor mijn arme Duitser, het is goed brood.
wha-?? i wanted to eat it
Brown bread FLOWER???
What is brown bread flour
@Education Georg used whole wheat flour for the starter dough.
@@dweuromaxx is whole wheat flour bread soft like normal bread ?
@@education4949 no
Brötchen!
yes, you indeed call this a "small bread" in germany. ;)
The recycling "method" is absolutely illegal in France, it produce an horrible taste bread. Interestingly, I am curious to see a German recipe integrating a very small amount of bread already cook from before.
Мне нужен переводчик и граммовки.
I know the video is over 3 years old, but I never saw what you did the the ground stale bread in the beginning part of your video...
1:48 Yea right... Germany only seems rich because the state is devouring the money of it's citizens, an average German has less financial savings then the average Greek has.
PS: But yea german Bread is amazing and incomparable in the world!
What Do U Say !! I love German Bread ..go Slow
Didn't know that the EU government communicates in English 🤔
@Jay Baruna Officially are actually 24 EU languages in use at the European Parliament. It is a fundamental democratic principle that every EU citizen can become a Member.
@@dweuromaxx Yes, I know. It is similar in India where we have 22 official languages including English for the same reason that EU uses English. However I didn't know that English remains an EU language.
How about completely veg bread. It's nice
😘
No Russian ingredient is allowed. Or it is not EU /German/ bread. We have EU emargo against the dictatirship 🤣
I do really don't undersrans the thing about german bread. It is not a good bread. At the best, it is regular, it isn't amazing.
Sorry. As soon as I saw the close-up of Merkel, I'm finished.
