Dan Mcmahon | Chinook Pilot in Vietnam

- Inspired by the technicalities and challenges of flight, Dan Mcmahon entered the Army as a helicopter pilot and quickly found himself on the frontlines of Vietnam. His missions involved what he calls, "just hauling lots of stuff." The CH-47 Chinook was a workhorse in the war transporting men, livestock, ammo, food, and other supplies. His missions became more daring as the war raged on. Aircraft recovery became commonplace, Dan hauled downed or disable aircraft such as the Cobra or Hueys in a daring effort. He recalls the weather and fuel levels being the primary concern, being shot at by the enemy was just another factor.
This is his American Warrior story.
I lived across the street from Hotel 3 on Tan Son Nhut AB 69/70! Saw every type of helicopter recovery effort arrive right over our barracks. Even the CH 54 Skycrane with a Ch47 along for the ride. A friend from Paducah, Ky was the only survivor of a Chinook crash! 25 others died. He listened for several days while the VC scavenged the wreckage and victims. Finally heard American troops talking. He crawled out from the brush where he was hiding and was evacuated to Japan for burn treatment. God bless you all!
This country is nothing without the service and sacrifices of so many men, women, and families. Thank you so much, Dan, for your service. We are indebted to you and many. God bless you and your loved ones.
I could listen to men/women like these all day long. Many thanks for all of your wonderful content!
I’m a US Army CH-47 Chinook Flight Engineer that served in both Gulf Wars and in Operation Just Cause in Panama. I salute the soldiers before me for their service, courage, dedication, and sacrifice! 🇺🇸
My dad was a CH47 pilot for the South Vietnamese Air Force.
We were among the fortunate ones who were able to fly out to the USS Midway after the fall of Saigon in 1975.
Hello there Mr McMahon,
I’m in England and I just watched this UA-cam video. May I add to your remarks about “duty”…..
I guess military duty is also about what you’ve been trained and told what you must do, but I also imagine that “duty” is what those guys on the ground are expecting from you. Otherwise, they may be history. I’m a paramedic in London but I don’t go on shift expecting that someone wants to kill me!
I salute you…top flight!
There really are not words to express how grateful we are for your service. Thank you! May God Bless you richly!
As I listen to the harrowing stories of men like you, thanking you seems so shallow.
I am grateful for you and glad that you have a better experience with other veterans.
