I've never seen Te Kanawa sing so powerfully! Her acting was so compelling! I hope she was proud of herself! She really gave herself to the character and let the music sing through her. And might I say, she sounds beautiful!

For years when I return I have to cry from her singing and playing and the music. What a drama and feeling she plays here. I think the best Manon also Domingo is great.
My favorite rendition of this piece! She is one of the few artists really strikes me and captivated me with her emotions, stage presence and voice!!! ❤️

I think this is the best interpretation of the role on DVD, i personally prefer it to the Met 1980 production. . Kanawa's singing and acting are out of this world and she also has a marvellous beauty.

A mio giudizio la interpretazione scenica più realistica che io abbia mai visto del 4° atto della Manon Lescaut, unita a una superba interpretazione vocale.

The last ackte was my body full of goose bumps. So sung emotionally and with smartness. Never seen better than this performance in London ... The first time I saw and heard Manon was in The Hague and became my favorite opera by Puccinni. I have never heard or seen a better version of Manon. Only Magda Olivero on old records .......

A magical interpretation. Where did she get that powerful subtext? I'm so grateful to have seen this. I always admired the sheer beauty of her sound, but this is a masterclass in what a mature singing actress can do. I feel compelled to say, Thank you, Dame Te Kanawa.

Read her book Opera for Lovers--she mentions that she was sick at the time and probably should not have done it. You can hear the voice cracks.

Here I am again . This week I saw La Boheme in Lock-douwn (television) but ... I keep finding Manon more dramatic. From this vidio it is also dramatic that the last gasp last notes of the oprea are abruptly cut off. THAT HURTS MY. Why not complete to the last gasp and musical note? You are completely absorbed in this aria.
Misschien de mooiste vertolking van Manon, door Kiri en Placido gezongen op vinyl. Ik hoorde het intermezzo vanmorgen op de radio en er kwam een onverwachte emotie van een tranen waterval. Toen ik voor de eerste keer Manon zag en hoorde in het circustheater in Scheveningen. Een productie van de Nederlandse opera uit de jaren 70. Waren alle andere opera's van Puccuni voor mij in in hartstocht (la Boheme ect.......) opera's minder spannend de smart en het einde is te horen van dit tweetal .

decepcionante. Atrasada en los tiempos.
Presenza scenica oscena, dizione lasciata nel camerino, fraseggio sconosciuto, clamoroso fuori tempo (RRRRORRR al posto di ORROR), recitare parlando quando il registro verso il basso non c'è (Ahimè, son sola), drammatica interruzione nel crescendo causa fiato corto (Oh sola, abbandonata, io la deserta...) e anche qui recitato per sopperire al registro basso che non c'è, su quel "No, non voglio morir" moriamo tutti per il mal di pancia, non si salva nemmeno quel "Tutto è dunque finito"spezzato dalla presa d'aria; "Terra di pace mi sembrava questa" con un bel raglio sulla parola "mi"; da lì in poi è degna di un circo, fino al conclusivo "Non voglio morir", in cui invece si sperava che morisse in scena. E il pubblico ha anche applaudito! Terribile.
Condivido tutto ciò che ha scritto... tranne per la presenza scenica, secondo me molto d'effetto.
È però terrificante tutto il resto... ed ancor più terribile è vedere quanta gente apprezzi!
È molto semplicemente troppo lento il tempo imposto da Sinopoli. È ovvio che la cantante debba prendere fiato impunti incongrui. La voce è bella, l'interprete è molto impegnata, ma ci sono dei limiti fisici!

As much as I love Dame Kiri I can see why she waited so long to sing this. Very good acting. Unfortunately she could not put it all together vocally. She does wonders with LYRIC SOPRANO roles. Her Tosca was also not very good etc. Arnold Bourbon Amaral

It's one of the few Puccini operas I'm not a huge fan of. Kiri never sung the other "Manon" from reading a book she wrote. I always found it odd, I thought she'd be perfect for Massenet's version.

Purtroppo si tende a dimenticare che l'Opera è prima di tutto Teatro. E questo, checché si voglia pontificare sul cavillo vocale, è un grande esempio di presenza scenica e buon gusto - rarità tra i cantanti lirici...

Giusto per chiarire, sono d'accordo che una buona presenza scenica migliori un'opera, ma senza una buona voce per me non si va da nessuna parte. Per questo dicevo che la voce è la cosa più importante: del resto un'opera rimane fruibile in forma di concerto (quindi senza recitazione), ma senza un buon cantare sarebbe ridicola!
Voce e musica sono presupposto fondamentale, e questo è innegabile. Ma il segno dell' Opera, l'ingrediente aggiunto, ciò che la distingue da ogni altra forma musicale, è il Teatro. Non comprendo lo stare in scena di certi cantanti, quasi tutto fosse loro dovuto fintantoché cantano... Kiri Te Kanawa m'è parsa in questo "onesta". Poi siamo d'accordo che vocalmente qui abbia degli acciacchi, anche se ascoltando altre sue versioni credo di poter dire che siano un caso isolato.

J'adore Maria Callas, elle a ouvert la voie à d'autres talentueuses soprano lyriques, et cette admiration que nous lui vouons, ne doit pas nous empêcher d'apprécier d'autres chanteuses lyriques, d'autant plus que nous ne possédons de la Divine que nos précieux coffrets vinyles et Cd, il existe si peu de vidéos d'elles et pas du tout du temps de sa splendeur vocale, alors prenons du plaisir à découvrir la nouvelle génération. Merci pour cette vidéo, Kiri Te Kanawa si elle ne possède pas le timbre unique de Maria Callas, chante tout de même avec ses tripes !

Dragan Vidic well, Kanawa's recording of Tosca, conducted by Solt,i is in my opinion remarkable, and it has been widely appreciated. She is a good Tosca, though maybe not a 'ultimate' Tosca (but I do not consider any recording as ultimate).

I agree with you Dragan Vidic, she goes a bit to far, breaking op the lines of the aria you should not do I think. I am not sure, maybe on stage it worked, for my taste it is a bit too grand guignol .
