Who is this lovely intelligent woman? Excellent interviewer, her questions are spot on and she doesn’t interrupt the answers with her own stuff. Top notch!
@@ivanromero-martinez3793 , I think Massimo is more of a teacher and philosopher. Ryan Holiday uses Stoicism as a marketing tool. I don't really relate with that.
Stoicism must be learned since the beginning... at school. It´ll be a good way to discover alternatives, in order to handle daily situations in our lives.
I encountered stoicism about 2 years ago at the age of 29 and It definitely has changed my perspective on life. I was a christian for about 15 years of my life and to be honest stoic philosophy has helped me a lot more than religion ever has. I am not knockin on religion but yea stoicism is wisdom at its finest and has helped an ignorant man like myself see things clearer. I live here in Mexico and no one I know has any idea what it is and im like wtf why not lol
Christianism (speicifically the Bible) although can prepare you for a good and meanigful life, its not a manual. Through intense and deep learning (much more than typical sunday morning services ever go into) one can derive a complete understanding of life. But a cursory look into the Bible will provide cursory instruction only. 'should i get drink alcohol? the plain text says no problem, just dont get drunk, so you may think drinking constantly without ever getting drunk is ok. Deep understanding will show you that you were created for a purpose, being loved and prepared for all good works. Drinking can hinder that, some may think of you differently, some may not welcome you, some may struggle with their past demons. Likewise all is good in Moderation and pretty much all is bad in extremes or if you develop a dependency. Continuous drinking is alcoholism even if you never get drunk and its negative since it affects your will and readiness to affront life. Yet a stoic would write that drinking should be in moderation and that it should never be an end in itself, but only an enjoyable moment with others. So while the Bible contains the same wisdom, preachers (and you) may not actually go deep enough to actually get to that truth, but stoic philosophers are writing basically specifically manuals on how to live.
Its such a surprise to hear the crispness of the understanding of stoicism in so simple conversation i am thankful to hear again and again i play this video.

I like how at 14:50 Massimo is explaining how crazy these times we're living in are. Little did he know that in just two months from the release of this video we'd be in the beginning of a global pandemic that changes the direction of history
Stoicism, has such applications even today, although it's origins go back over 2,000 years. A philosophy that has us ask, how can we live a better life, how can we be better humans, seems just right for todays times. It also focuses on us, and what we can do personally, which is what we have complete control over, and yet the philosophy encourages us as global citizens, and that we are social animals who should be striving to improve not just for us, but for how all of society can benefit from our personal development. Bravo Massimo!
i've just finished watching this and started crying because what he says makes so much sense to me. i'm a highly emotional person who deeply seeks for tranquility and has tried many of the techniques Massimo talks about, like taking a look from a broad perspective or not categorizing people as bad. but something was missing, and that routine, journaling and help from people who were brave enough to write and help. thank you for this interview.
In my opinion, the mojo of Stoicism could be its simplicity to figuring complex things out with centuries of wisdom lessons, really an interesting and stunning topic that I will try to apply more in my daily life.
“I was not particularly overwhelmed by the death of my father, my divorce and a change o jobs”??? Man, you were already a stoic before you knew it. I’d be pretty devastated by such trilogy.
I suppose many of you have read some of his books... where should I start to read him? "How to Be a Stoic", "The Stoic Guide to a Happy Life", or "A Handbook for New Stoics" ?
I think I´ve been approaching life as an estoic "unconsciously", when I am dealing with something painful or passing through difficult moments I just look up to the sky and I remember that there is a universe outside with billions and billions of stars, planets, galaxies, etc, etc. then having that idea on my mind I just come to terms and accept that my problems are not of a big deal.
It's a great interview, excellent interviewer and interviewee. One thing I have a gripe about is the claim, which comes off as an attempt to legitimize stoicism (an attempt that is not needed), by claiming that since Aquinas did X then Christianity adopted it. Aquinas is a post schism erudite, so the fact that in Judaism and Orthodox Christianity (based on Judaism) these principles existed regardless of stoicism shoots this down.
Calma¡ , hay muchos más en español, seguro sera subtitulado pronto. aunque debemos hacer un esfuerzo adicional por entender el inglés. El resumido video introductorio si esta subtitulado.
I disagree with the fact that people who act badly is because they don't even realize what they're doing. What I think is that they just normalized their acts, removing the bad connotation of their actions.
That was the same thing the speaker said in other words. He does not talk about ignorance in a superficial way, he talks about a deep unwisdom about the right thing to do.
the problem with doing bad things is that most people don't want to see that they are wrong in their views because they are too invested in their views and/or they are zealots. Its wilfull ignorance, that is something that no ammount of education or dialogue can cure.
Because the BBVA bank and the journal El País sponsor this talks and interviews a certainty time ago, and built a community around this, both originally from Spain, later to the Hispanic talkers (sorry for the bad English)
I asked this question, would I still be watching this video if this day was the last day of my life? And the answer was yes. I guess I didn't understand the Stoic approach properly :/
I agree with all parts, except for the part of "human nature" like who get it first, as part indigenous, my humanity has been denied, and the definition of human nature was instrumental to exclude me and my people from humanity
Schopenhauer and Nietzsche did for me. I am totally ok with my death. Enjoys your love ones, talk to a good friend, enjoy the warmth of a woman’s body and live in the present. Deaths will arrive in due time. Welcome Death!

Un respeto para los q no podemos seguir toda la conversacion, soliais hacer una traduccion o unos subtitulos antes, esta vez cero asi q no puedo seguiros.😔😕😔😕😕
The first answer is completely wrong. If that's the basis of the conversation, there's no point in listening any further. An actual stoic embraces all things natural -- which includes ALL of the emotions in all of their beautiful colors. A stoic does not suppress some emotions and enhance others! To what end???? Wow that would be completely stupid!! A stoic understands that emotions are tools that are to be personally used, not mindlessly displayed to others. Stoics appreciate the opinion of others, but actually don't care what anyone thinks. You can't learn to be a stoic -- you either are or you aren't.
Who is this lovely intelligent woman? Excellent interviewer, her questions are spot on and she doesn’t interrupt the answers with her own stuff. Top notch!

Positive? Negative?
The goal of stoicism is to lead towards positive ones?
