i grew up in east berlin. we've had a Datsche (small garden far away) were we spent so many joyful days together. my parents got divorced in 1991. now its 2017. i am old and preparing to sell this gardrn. only a small flame lights up this room. i'm sitting here in the dark, remembering these days, gone long time ago. and listening to this song...
Don't you worry, the world revolution is inevitable, sooner or later fairness and equality will prevail. The younger generation is studying and I have faith that by the time of my grandchildren, when i get old, it will get closer. Our struggle continues.
Goodbye lenin is one my favourite movies. This song makes me miss the love of my life. We broke up in 2012. Last spoke in 2017. Crazy but I still think about her.
This song reminds me of those summers in the past when I was a teenager... filled with depression, sadness, yet love and happiness all mixed together, feeling like time would never pass by. Now that I listen to it, I realize time has passed by too fast and it never stops. I feel so nostalgic whenever I listen to this song. Yann Tiersen is truly an amazing musician......
Even though it doesn't seem like it, life can be even more beautiful. Modern people are way too much into work. Just try to take your time, go to a forest and go on a walk. Not just for 30 minutes. Take your whole evening for it. Humans are made for nature, our dark and grey rooms aren't what we are programmed to like. Our whole existence is about appreciating life, nature, music, culture, happiness, sadness. I know life can be hard sometimes and make you think everything you do is meaningless, but try to put a meaning into everything. Do things you're passionate about, go out when it's dark and look at the night sky. There's so much to life, we just tend to forget about it. I hope you read this 10 years later and don't even need my assistance anymore. If you do need it, there you are. Life is beautiful, you just have to discover what life is
I watched the movie in 2004 in a cinema and was impressed very much by the script and the acting of the whole cast. Alex was a character whom everyone can develop empathy with. His endless love for his mother, his struggle to keep her alive for few months more, and his ideal and naive socialism in his mind which we see throughout and especially at the end of the movie, were admired by many people around the world. Then i visited Germany in 2007, i saw Berlin and Munich. I visited Karl Marx Allee, Die Mauer Museum, Checkpoint Charlie, TV Tower, and of course DDR Museum in east Berlin. During my whole visit, this music and various scenes from the movie came frequently into my mind. I felt myself as if i was a former east German citizen, looking into the memories of my past country, and i would never be able to return to those "tough, yet beautiful" days like Alex. This beautiful masterpiece and the movie are so powerful as art productions that they make someone who never visited Germany before felt like this. Congrats Mr. Brühl, Congrats Mr. Becker, and Congrats Mr. Tiersen.
I watched this film in German lesson and now I understand all emotions it gave to me. Now I can play this soundtrack and I try to reflect these emotions.
@@doitanywayz Sorry, I loved the film. In 1989/90 you could say everyday: "They write history now." And the idea, "what if you miss a full year of history is not dumb.
I first heard this live . Installing hardwood floors in a customers house . He decided to play us music so we can work peacefully . He played this . I stopped working because of how beautiful it sounded . Made me want to pay him for blessing my ears .. that was in 08’ I still listen to it all the time .
After a visit in Berlin, i started watching films concerning its history, and came across this wonderful film! Wow how peaceful this song makes me feel!! 😇
My friend and I saw this movie a few years ago, in the summer. My grandfather was alive and when I back to home I met him in our small garden,Everything was beautiful around. When I listen to this music I always remember my home, childhood and grandfather. What a beautiful time...
This film is special to me. It makes me feel so nostalgic. As a single mum I know how hard it is to raise a son and a daughter. I made mistakes but they know I love them. And they love me too. Watching this film over the years with them, I know that tears fall not only from my eyes when we hear this soulful music.
For all those people who helped me find this music, I give you a big thanks. I began the search in 2010 and the search ended today. I'm going to remember this day 'till the end of my life, 'cause today I found a masterpiece. cheers for all those people who makes songs like these rise.

the music compliments the film so well...his love of his mother and what he'd do for her happiness was so touching...i lost my mom a year ago...and even though she knew i loved her...i never really showed her...the look of love on his face in the old photo at the end of the film says it all...
one of the most uplifting if saddest films i've ever seen....right at the end...the look of love he gives his mother.......i felt tears...and its what i feel for my now dearly departed mother....
I love this song, I watched the film a long time ago. Now I watched a Chinese drama called "Somewhere only we know" on Netflix. In one Episode this song was discussed and that's what brought me back. Very happy about this.
I don't know why, but everytime I listen to this song I think of my uncle, whom I never met. He was born in East Germany and died there when he was only 9 years old. He never got to know a different world. It really fills my heart with sorrow.
So beautiful... This song reminds me of the best time of my life, playing outside with my friends, having pure fun and happiness, such joy.... The time when my first crush made my stomach hurt and the mixed feelings of hate and love, depression and happiness... My (then) two best buds, playing outside the whole day, not doing our homework, and playing till Sunday midnight just in time to do our homework... The days when my best girl-friend becomes my crush and then girlfriend...
Ah, good times. I remember, when i was in Moscow, i went to the record store and saw this soundtrack. "How much?" - "~15$" - "Whaaa~, ok, i'll take it". And than i listen it on loop whole evening. Just a masterpiece.
We watched this movie in my German class a few months ago. There were 5 of us in total, including the teacher. I especially think about the opening scene a lot and the poignant nostalgia it evokes. Even though the memory is fresh, I know I'll come back to this song years from now and remember all the evenings I spent in our little classroom, and who knows where I'll be by then? Very few songs have ever made me feel like this.
My family grew up In East Germany and their stories and those of their friends who lost their lives, often go unnoticed for some reason. I made a real connection with this movie.
I'm from Texas but my best friend is from Germany. His parents grew up in the DDR and I deeply treasure their stories, I even got to drive a Trabant last time I went
I discovered this today while working in a coffee on my next blog post, bit depressed so it just touched a nerve.. I love it!! Thank you for the inspiration
Summer of 98 for my generation.. being 15 again... Before anyone died. Before our dreams fade away. Ah the long long summer nights..where did you go? When did I grow up? Why did it have to be so fucking fast? When I die I will tell God to listen to this song so he can forgive us all, to show him how sad, short and hard our lives were.
This is music because you feel what you have to feel, what the composer wants you to feel, and if that happens, I think that you can call it music :) This is really wonderful !!
I'd forgotten this movie... my mom had us watch it as a "German Movie Night", funny that was when I was a little kid, and I think my german has deteriorated since then
I don't know what it was, but i remember this song from something. Never seen the movie, as far as I know. But this song just hits you in the right places.
i remember me sitting in school with my class and watching 'good bye lenin' when suddenly this song came and i jumped and shouted 'THAT'S YANN FUCKING TIERSEN' and nobody knew him and i was like 'shit what happened to this world man!'

The end of the film "Good Bye Lenin!", with this music, is sensational. But the next music, during the credits, spoils all the sense.
