I've watched this 4 times now, I think I'm ready to start tailoring some of my overly huge concert t-shirts now. My mom passed earlier this year and she created sewing and quilting crafts for decades. I've been teaching myself to sew to honor her life. I repaired a ripped patio umbrella with the sewing machine, and now I want to move onto tailoring my t-shirts!
Thank you for explaining everything as you were doing it!! I’m still very new to sewing so it’s really nice to have someone explain the little details like back stitching and stuff too.
4 years later, and im so thankful I found this video. I've never sewn or altered a single thing in my entire life, but im a 6'3, skinny guy, and im beyond fed up with all my clothes not fitting me. I have a closet full of tshirts I like, but most of them are too baggy on me, and I feel like baggy clothes are a bad look for my frame. I thought about taking my stuff into an alteration shop, but I'm not exactly working with a 6 figure income, so I decided to give it a shot. I've watched a few other videos, but yours is by far the best one, with the best technique, that I've found. Thank you!! You make it look so simple. Hopefully I won't completely wreck all the shirts in my closet 😂😂😂
Dang, this is much easier than doing it the way I found in another video where the sleeves were removed. Glad I found this one before I started. And, DANG I wish I had a sewing machine. My hand-stitching is getting more phenomenal, tho'. But, aaaaaarrrgh! _hand-stitching_
Thank you so so so much for this!!!! I thrifted some cool shirts the other day and was disappointed by how big they were on me, but this worked absolutely perfectly. Super easy and very manageable, despite my complete lack of basically any sewing experience😅😅
Thank you for this tutorial. So many "simple" t shirt tutorials require you to "have a shirt you already like the fit of" to make into a pattern. This will be MUCH easier than struggling to find a shirt that fits first and taking it apart.
Great process, since I don't have a dress form/buddy I'm going to lay it flat on my cutting table and place a t-shirt in the size I want on top of it and trace around it with 3/8" seam allowance and then serger it. Thank you, this is MUCH easier than I've done in the past with taking off the sleeves!
Thank you for this suggestion, I was desperately tryin gto figure out how AWKWARD it was going to be doing this alone, but you have just solved my biggest problem. :)
omg thank you for this because all the others videos the people were cutting the sleeve completely off and having to sew them back on which was to much work! your way is much better!🙌🏾❤️
Thanks!! Even though it seems so simple as a beginner sewist sometime it's hard to figure out how to do these tasks! I also didn't realize the hem zigzag should go on and off the shirt!
I just want to say, I've always been terrified of using a sewing machine because it looks so daunting but you made it look so simple and easy, thank you!

The best one of the T-Shirt Altering videos, and I have looked at many. Please do another one with a white t-shirt and contrasting thread for my old eyes! Thanks.
I’m a novice but this looks super easy! Thanks so much. My daughter bought me a T-shirt for Christmas, it has special logo for the cafe where she works but it’s massive on me, especially as I’ve been dieting! I felt anxious and was going to take it to a dressmaker but no need to now! I’m tall so won’t be taking it up - only in! ❤ Thanks again!

This was such a great video! Just thrifted some new shirts that are too big and gave myself the challenge of resizing them. Thanks for the detailed process, hopefully it won’t be that much of a challenge!
If your fabric is super stretchy you can use a very narrow zig zag to prevent it from popping but band t shirts usually have no stretch so you can use either. Ideally you want to serge the seam or use the lightening bolt stitch.
This was great and simple...my kind of video since I cannot sew yet. Would love to be a part of your sewing class should you decide to do one live on FB or yt.

To watch you go through the process was amazing. However, what do you suggest if my machine is not capable of sewing zigzags? I'm a novice and using my vintage Singer 201 that sews amazing straight stitches, but I don't have any attachments for zigzag.
Hummmm you could buy a serger! You can try it with a straight stitch but it’s probably going to pop apart at some point. You could try seeing it by hand with a whip stitch too!

Hi! Do you have to alter the top of the shirt that you’re making smaller? Or does the shoulder/top of the shirt look normal after making the sides and sleeves smaller? Thank you!
@@bethjackson4402 It really e Depends on what you need altered on it. Sometimes you will want to take up the shoulders. If you do then check this video out -->How to Resize a T-shirt Including Sleeves The Easy Way | Sew Anastasia ua-cam.com/video/B00y9TFUH9s/v-deo.html
This is fantastic! About six months ago I bought seven nice, tee shirts with print. The good news is I lost weight since then. The bad news is they are now giant on me. This will save me money buying new ones. Question: can you just take a shirt that fits and lay it flat on the big one so you can trace the size?
Thank you so much for this video! I have to try that out asap. 😀 I'm short and the square shape of the men's band shirts don't look that good on me.^^ The only problem is that I have poor experience in sewing...
Thanks for the tutorial! I have to buy large shirts because my chest is big, but the waist and lower hip are always too big and frumpy because of it. I'm hopeful that this might help me look normal!
This won't work if your shirt is a men's shirt or much bigger than the size you want, because the shoulder will be too wide and make the arms look a lot longer with the stitch line falling much lower on the arm. That's why it's suggested to take off the sleeve (to match it to the new size of the arm hole). This is a good hack if you're not working with something much bigger, but I would warn viewers so they don't make that mistake with a beloved band tee or one with a lot of significance for them.
Try this video I made for shortening the shoulder. Happy sewing! How to Resize a T-shirt Including Sleeves The Easy Way | Sew Anastasia ua-cam.com/video/B00y9TFUH9s/v-deo.html
So... some of the shirts I wish to alter are active wear for the gym and court sports, etc. What is the best way to sew these to ensure a durable stitch that won't come apart? Also, polo shirts are sewn similarly on the sleeves and sides. Will this method work on polo/golf style shirts too? I've lost close to 40 pounds now but have a teunk that is longer than average so I would just be doing the sides and sleeves as shown in part one, no hems on most as the lengths work for me already. Normally I would just buy smaller sizes but your video has convinced me that I can do this. Plus I have some really nice shirts that I want to continue wearing as they are less than a few years old and in great shape.p
My only question is how will this hold up, without an overlock stitch? And is there any way to mimic the overlock stitch on a traditional sewing machine?
Knit jersey does not fray so it will hold up good. You can serge with a home sewing machine like this.... Watch this video...ua-cam.com/video/CUrIKH9U-xQ/v-deo.html
have you ever made another video with a lighter color shirt? this seems absolutely incredibly helpful, but i have poor vision and the black is hard to see the sleeve alterations on 💛 also...what kind of stitch setting did you use? thank you!!!
Do you need to have a special needle attached for stretch fabrics like t-shits? I’ve tried sewing these fabrics with regular needles and it ends up looking puckered (if that makes sense) and tends to curve the fabric in a particular direction. Thanks.

You can take in any top this way. Also for your pants you will need to remove the elastic, take in the sides and then put back in the casing and elastic. Hope that helps. Thank you for watching.
When zigzag stitching the hem up, you might want to use the zigzag stitch that also does a stitch in the middle of the zigag. This will make your hem more sturdy without adding any bulk to the hem. Sorry, but I can't think of the proper name for that stitch, but you will see it on your stitch selector if your machine has that stitch.
So, what if you don't wanna get rid of the excess? I want it to resizable back to it's original size so other's can just pull out the stitches where they need to? If that makes sense?
This is amazing. Not having to remove and reattach the sleeves takes out all the anxiety that resizing a tshirt was giving me. Thank you so much!

Awesome I’ll check it out. 🎀
So, what if you don't wanna get rid of the excess? I want it to resizable back to it's original size so other's can just pull out the stitches where they need to? If that makes sense?
Then I wouldn’t cut off the extra but I would not take in the sleeves. I would blend the stitch into the armhole so you do not get bunching.
Could I technically do this with a hoodie also?
