Thoughts on the Game Boy Advance version of the classic Super Mario Bros! #nintendo #supermario #supermariobros #retrogaming #nes #snes #famicom #retrogames #sega #genesis #shorts #fyp
I think distorted sprites is way better than screen crunch. Not only do you get to actually see what's going on, but you get some funny faces too. Edit: Guys, I'm not comparing SMBDX and NES Classics: SMB, I'm comparing distorted sprites to screen crunch. In my opinion, SMBDX is better because of all the other stuff that's in it, but I think them squishing the sprites to make them fit would've been a better compromise than to make you blind to most things coming up ahead.
@@Kabosu_Doge It is though. I've literally pulled it up in a hex editor and I'm looking at the NES ROM file inside the GBA ROM right now. And what do you mean the GBA doesn't have a Famicom emulator? If someone writes a Famicom/NES emulator for the GBA, then the GBA has a Famicom/NES emulator. Edit: I read the original comment again. No, the GBA doesn't have a Famicom emulator builtin, however, the SMB version of NES classic series is still emulated.
This version was how I first played the game as a kid. I got it around my 5th birthday. I used to play it a ton on my SP to the point the cartridge doesn't work anymore
The second wave of GBA NES Classics had some tweaks that made the sprites look a lot better. Zelda II looks REALLY good; sprites had logical lines removed to make them look "right" without being squished.
You can also play this by downloading it from Animal Crossing if you have the game in your town, but the problem is, you can only play Single Player and if you turn off the GBA, you lose Super Mario Bros. until you download it from AC again.
Super Mario Bros. is that one game in Animal Crossing you CANNOT get without hacks. The password for it was in a Japanese magazine, and nobody remembers the code, so…yeah.
@@siyahseeker I know, a UA-camr named Hunter R. created custom e-Reader Cards that allow you to get Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. He basically did what Nintendo originally intended to do but never went through with it.
The issue of sprites being squiched like that happens because of 2 characteristics of the GBA itself: 1. It has a 3:2 aspect ratio, while the NES has a 4:3 aspect ratio 2. It has a lower resolution compared to a NES (240×160 vs 256x240)
I always found the GBA's aspect ratio an interesting "in between" of full screen and wide screen. Released in 2001, it was leaving the 4:3 era of the 90's but not quite yet in the 16:9 era of the 2000's. Thus it was 3:2.
I owned the classic NES series ports of The Legend of Zelda and Zelda 2 the Adventure of Link. The classic NES GBA SP was cool. Its authenticity was sweet.
Ugh.. I wonder if this is where it began. The copy/paste $50 price tag routine. At least the SMB advanced made up for the series, but at least if they're going to do that, port SMB deluxe instead.
What are you talking about, these were budget titles. The nes GBA games retailed for $20, brand new in stores at the time. That wasn't terrible for the time, especially since this predates virtual console
Super Mario Bros. 1 (based on SMAS version, Part of SMA5) never ported to GBA, NES version instead, SMB1 on GBA with NES Emulation is part of Classic NES Series.
If you're asking asking me Super Mario Bros (1985) and Super Mario Bros The Lost Levels released releasing on the Gameboy Advance seems kinda pointless because you can play Super Mario Bros Deluxe on the Gameboy Advance and that game has so much more content
Funny how the Gameboy Color version of the original Super Mario Bros, a game on a much less powerful system, is almost a direct upgrade from the GBA port.
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (Hebrews 9:27) The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9) And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:15) And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (Hebrews 9:27)
Why is it that kirby's adventure got improved graphics and subgames when it got ported to the gba as nightmare in dreamland but smb 1 needed to have distorted sprite?
I think distorted sprites is way better than screen crunch. Not only do you get to actually see what's going on, but you get some funny faces too.

It's a much better compromise fr
Ye but the gb color version wqs maded from the ground up and have a lot of new features
@1trie since that was playable on GBA, you simply can just choose which one you prefer, Which is nice
deluxe has way more charm in my opinion and the screen crunch kinda adds to it its own weird way
@@GruffyXP I don't see how exactly the screen crunch could make the game better in any way, but I respect your opinion.
Of note is that certain glitched worlds on this version are different from the original ones :)
I recently got into that, what's the differences?
Nice!
@@martianidot Oh for Christs sake I wrote an elaborate comment and UA-cam nuked it. Do you have Discord by any chance?
@Jeansowaty Yeah, I do actually have Discord, it probably would be a lot easier to communicate there anyway

Small Mario looks like a hunchback haha
Small Mario crouching in Super Mario Bros.?!?!
It later officially happened in Mario Maker.
@@siyahseekerMario maker 2 to be specific
I present to you... Small fire Mario.
This is not a port.
Is a modified NES ROM that runs on the GBA. The GBA was designed with a built in Famicom emulator.
No. This IS a port, and the GBA, nor the GBA SP or GBA Micro have a Famicom emulator. I can understand why you would think this.

@@GameboygeniusOh. I'm dumb :)
Looks like Nintendo used some emulator like PocketNES
@@Gameboygenius Probably the emulator is in the GBA ROM instead of the GBA itself
I don't know, I just think it's funny.
Look, it's either that or _screen crunch_

The second wave of GBA NES Classics had some tweaks that made the sprites look a lot better. Zelda II looks REALLY good; sprites had logical lines removed to make them look "right" without being squished.
Are these NES classics any good in the GBA? I did play some of them, they not so bad.
hell yea they are good

@@UA-camPizzer The aspect ratio does matter, as some screens will force it to a certain ratio instead of keeping the original, like 4:3 or 16:9

Mario bros deluxe: I'm a joke to you?
That’s for the Game Boy color
@@Brainstormer99But the GBA is backwards compatible and can play GB and GBC games.
@@thedarkenigma3834 yeah but technically a GBC Game is not a GBA Game for some reason they just made one for the GBA Because less screen cramp

At least it’s better than Sonic Genesis
Oh throw that thing in the deepest locations in hell...
Surprised classic nes series went wrong here, but can just go backwards compatibility with gbc smb
The GBC SMB has a very annoying way of moving the screen around that makes it kind of unpleasant. At least they added some new play modes though.
@SmallSpoonBrigade ack, haven't played in a while. I did like game boy printer with it. Thanks for the info
The GBC also has lower resolution of 160×144 compared to the GBA resolution of 240×160 and NES resolution of 256×240
@@jhgvvetyjj6589 thanks, kinda reminds me of how the 2ds/3ds xl help make chrono trigger fonts way bigger than regular 3ds/ds.
It looks like Mario's shrugging when he starts the level
Mario got negative jaw
Perfect for Marios with no necks!
Mario now looks like a goomba 😂
Fun fact: The resolution of Nes is larger than Gba.
I grew up with this version, as well as the gba port of smb3 and the gba port of SMW
Is it just me or does small Mario look like he has a mullet?
Are we gonna talk about what Mario did to that Bully Bill?
Damn bro wtf happened to mario's neck??!?!
I honestly never noticed the squished ratio at the time, more noticeable on a bigger screen
I like to think Nintendo got their crouching sprites for small Mario in the SMB style of Super Mario Maker 2 from this game. Look, they’re similar!
I owned the classic NES series ports of The Legend of Zelda and Zelda 2 the Adventure of Link. The classic NES GBA SP was cool. Its authenticity was sweet.
MARIO FIX YOUR POSTURE BRO
The big mario screen crunch sprite is actually kinda better
The 256×240 video image of NES is cropped to 240×213, then vertically is 75% scaled to 240×160, as tiles are scaled from 8×8 to 8×6
YOU KNOW, THIS WOULD BE BETTER IF SUPER MARIO ADVANCE 5: SUPER MARIO BROS. WAS ON THE GBA, BUT OF COURSE, THAT SHIP HAS SAILED!!!
I don't know, but the one I've tried pans up and down every time Mario jumps and gives me motion sickness unlike the original.
Mario lost his mewing streak
The GBAdvance port looks worse than the GBColor port. Hmm.
Kirby Red Diamond looking ahh

Super Mario advance 5 : super Mario Bros 1
Super Mario advance 6 : super Mario 64
Ethier mario doesn't have a nech or he has a hunch back when he's short Mario.
Why was this worse than deluxe for the gbc?
IDK, it looks like the chibi version of the 8 bit Mario
Do super Mario bros deluxe for game boy next!
Super Mario Bros. 1 (based on SMAS version, Part of SMA5) never ported to GBA,
NES version instead, SMB1 on GBA with NES Emulation is part of Classic NES Series.
Or you could... Just play SMB Deluxe
The Japan-exclusive lost levels rerelease fixed the messed up Mario sprites. They’re still squished but they aren’t as messed up.
Poor super mario just dosent have a chin 😭
Ew! Wtf bro? They couldn’t redo his sprite just a bit?
That's the hot mario bros port
the nolstalga i had hearing ther gba boot up was a rush. it actually made me remember playing super mairo bros 3 on it
i love lil hunchback mario
whats up with bros head at the start 💀💀💀
Super Mario Scrunched Bros.

Why is it that kirby's adventure got improved graphics and subgames when it got ported to the gba as nightmare in dreamland but smb 1 needed to have distorted sprite?
"Where is Super Mario Advance 5?"
Super Mario Advance 5:
I play the GBA version, it's amazing honestly
And i like the ability to save and load in it...
tried to do the Minus world glitch on the gba emulator after seeing this.
Is this the same game as super Mario bros Deluxe on Gameboy Color?
For me the port is not very good because the Mario sprites and the goombas, koopas, peach, Bowser etc.
So, This Was Basically Super Mario Advance 0.
No. The GBA version level designs were a little different after the initial stages. I remember playing it and seeing subtle differences.
The sprites are strange but people like hard-core gamers from Japan will get used to it.
I played that, but I never had a gameboy advanced so I just played it on my DS
I prefer the NES version better;
especially on emulator.
The gba emulated the nes games? Impossibure 🤣. Where's my nes emu on gba? 🤣
does mario bros deluxe have minus world? i was trying it and isk if its my skill or if its js impossible
And if you press the left and right back buttons at the same time it opens an cheat engine or something
Is that why we never got Super Mario Advance 5?
No way they got that! We got a bad Sonic 1 remake on the GBA.
I had this game
The screen crunch makes it look like Mario's taking a crapper
I don't think Super Mario Bros is on the fridge yet
That's why smb deluxe is better
I think super Mario bros deluxe is fine.
Mario look like he got friendzone from Peach.
Why is the audio of these ports so crunchy also on the switch?
They removed small Mario's neck
I still play it
Mini Mario without 4 neck columns
it's pretty much a original game.
Super Mario deluxe is my preferred version
Small Mario: WHERE MY NECK
Short mario have no neck, tall mario have no chin
Mario no longer has a neck
Mario looks like he doesn't have a neck.
What do You mean emulated? It is not
Super neckless mario bros
Someone needs to fix this game😊
cool
Mario dont have neck lol
