Lionel Ritchie wrote and produced this song for Diana Ross to sing in memory of Marvin Gaye just a few weeks after he was murdered by his father. Marvin and Diana were close like siblings. almost wish you had done the original video, it was a tribute to Marv. but this is cool too...
Oh my, I grew up listening to the Motown sound. Diana and the Supremes, Martha and the vandellas, the 4 Tops, the Temptations...and on and on....great music! So many great artists! ❤️❤️❤️
Has never gotten the credit she deserves. Just because she didn't sing like Aretha or Patti did not mean she was a "lightweight" or "sell-out." She's a powerhouse performer and just about the last great superstar still with us.
Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson never dated Although they never had a romantic relationship, the childhood friends remained close during Ross' teenage years. When she turned 16, she said that Robinson used his skills to get the Supremes a record deal with Motown.
Well, good Lord!! I'm crying!! That was one emotional duet right there! They have a history together......don't you think? There's definitely chemistry there. I never knew he was such an influence in her career! Thank you, Jamel!
Jamel, You should check out Diana Ross and her duet with Lionel Richie - " Endless Love" from 1981. That duet between Diana and Lionel sounds just as good as this one with Smokey Robinson if not better. " Endless Love" was used in the 1981 movie of the same name as the song starring teenage Brooke Shields in it. You can't miss out on " Endless Love" with Lionel Richie.
Oh my. I remember when Diana Ross sang this song right after the death of Marvin Gaye. She was singing as they showed pictures of Marvin on the big screen. I cried like a baby. I wonder if that performance is out here somewhere.
Back in the day, people could kiss the person that they've known for over 20+ yrs and respect for their fellow musicians and dear friends this was how it was!! Had nothing to do with being a love interest, nor anything sexual, just plain-o respect between artist back then. Our mindsets today seems to be nothing but being in the gutter!! People today have no clue that showing someone how much they may love and care about you without any smutful thoughts; really makes me think about how hard and cold our world is today!! I'm deeply saddened about how people's reactions are to showing affection for those they truly care about 😭. I'm still a person that has no problem whatsoever about showing them how much they mean to me. My ex-daughter-in-law, to whom I consider is just like my own daughter and she is one of my best friends. We have always embraced each other and she gives me a big ole kiss right on the lips without hesitation!! There is absolutely not one thing wrong with how much we love and care about one another!! I have another daughter-in-law now, and I love her to pieces, we embrace everytime we see each other, and I kiss her on her cheek. I love her just as much as my other daughter-in-law; however she was raised where there wasn't a whole lot of hugging between herself and her parents. Even when we hug I can feel her tense up, this is when I want to tell her that it's ok. I respect her space and feelings because this is how she is, and my love for her will never change!! I truly miss how our world was back in those days; what a real shame it is to not be able to show our true feelings towards the ones we love the most for fear of what other people might think...I hate it!!
Miss Ross has a certain femme fatale and have always had that kind of enfluence when singing duets with her male peers in the business like Marvin Gaye,Smokey Robinson,Lionel Richie,Julio Eglesias,Rod Stewart....She is considered the highest quality of the female entertainer and a global icon.
Oh Jamel, you are just too funny. There's many duets that you'd think had "something going on" only to find out there wasn't other than their friendship(s). Dolly and Kenny come to mind. I think it's because they sing from their hearts. But one thing I do know is they don't, in my opinion have singers/songs like this today.....Thanks for your reaction, Jamel (and boy did you react lol) Take care and be well. Peace.
William "Smokey" Robinson,,,,, song writer of the decade. Ms. Diana the other band that people wanted to reunite in the millions worldwide.......The Supremes
Diana was involved for several years with Motown CEO Berry Gordy. He fathered her first child Rhonda. Two months into the pregnancy she married music executive Robert Ellis Silberstein
Either Smokey was a great actor or he loved her every bit as much as these lyrics suggest. And what an huge unusually smooth voice for a male vocalist.
While this song is widely thought to be a tribute to Marvin Gaye, that is only partly true. It has been stated many times, that Florence Ballard (The Supremes) and Paul Williams (The Temptations) were also inspirations.
ICONIC VOICES OF THE 6O'S WHAT A GREAT DUET DIANA & SMOKEY OR TAMMI & MARVIN THOSE MARKED MUSIC FOREVER THANKS FOR SHARING JAMEL_AKA_JAMAL ✌🏼& LO💚E MY BROTHER
I remember this song, especially the video. I didn't know what it was about until years later when I googled it.After that, every time I listen to it I think of Mr Marvin Gaye.
When she was performing live, she'd performed it with Smokey Robinson, her childhood friend, however, when she was doing it in video, she was performing it with Lionel Richie. Smokey is the man, like Lionel Richie, yet, Diana Ross is still the boss!
I saw Smokey Robinson at the Apollo Theater(!) in the late 90s/early 00s, and it's tied for the best show I've seen in my life. ALL of the panties in the room were off by the end, lol!! Someone spilled a drink on me and I didn't even care.
You mentioned looking at someone eye to eye talking to them and that singing to someone is another ball game. I know what you mean. I sang to my wife at our wedding I stayed composed while she cried. Thanks for posting this video.
This is awesome! The only argument in my house is whose version of Ain't No Mountain high Enough is the best...im partial to Diana over Marvin Gaye and Tammy Tyrell! Love her voice!
I thought you never reacted to one of the greatest Blues guitarists, the „Master of the Telecaster“, „The Iceman“, Mr. Albert Collins. You know George Thorogood. There is a really, really great live Performance from „Live Aid 1985“.It‘s Thorogood featering Albert Collins - „Madison Blues“.There are much more great stuff from Collins, such as „Black Cat Bone“, „Master Charge“, „Travelin‘ South“ and, and, and. When you really love Blues, you can‘t ignore Mr. Collins.(R.I.P.)
Another amazing duet is "With You I'm Born Again" by Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright. Stunningly gorgeous and intensely romantic. (ua-cam.com/video/3a0A-UZoHnk/v-deo.html) Billy Preston is another underappreciated artist.

OMG Diana and Smokey, I mean they're legends, this is how you sing live with emotion and love!!
SMOKIN' HOT!! He never once took his eyes off of her!!! Brought tears to my eyes!!!
I Love this song! I was fortunate enough to see Diana Ross in concert in the mid 80's, she is Magnificent!

Smokey Robinson: One of the greatest men to ever grace the music world.
just an incredible voice!

The "pinnacle of chemistry" ...absolutely
She performed at the Queen's Platinum Celebration on Saturday. She was fantastic.
She lip synced very well to her credit. Even spoke as she was singing ,a remarkable feat.
Has never gotten the credit she deserves. Just because she didn't sing like Aretha or Patti did not mean she was a "lightweight" or "sell-out." She's a powerhouse performer and just about the last great superstar still with us.
to keep it 100, i never heard anyone in my entire lifetime refer to her as a "lightweight" or "sell-out" except for right now in this comment.

Just two soul mates singing sweet melodies 🎶together again for old time sakes . And they haven't changed abit......💛
Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson never dated

Lol she literally said he was her first love on arsenio show and in her book. I wish one of them would do a movie about their lives.
THEIR PERFORMANCE MAKES ME SMILE!🙂🙂 SUCH LOVE AND DEEP RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER! ❤❤THEY ARE THE BEST OF FRIENDS! 🤗🤗
She was my absolute favorite singer growing up. Love her voice 🥰
Love Diana Ross❤
My top two favorite Motown artists, hands down. Miss Ross was my first childhood crush in the sixties.
I love this song, my favorite Diana Ross. Seeing them together is fire.
OMG I probably saw this in the 80s! Love both of them! I had the great privilege of seeing the great Diana Ross in concert about 10 years ago.
Smokey Robinson and Diana Ross……does it get any better than this??! ❤️
Well, good Lord!! I'm crying!! That was one emotional duet right there! They have a history together......don't you think? There's definitely chemistry there. I never knew he was such an influence in her career! Thank you, Jamel!
Agree! The respect to these two apparently accepting separate ways after experiencing love/attraction ❤️❤️❤️
They are magic together. ❤

When "Missing You" was recorded by Diana Ross, it was about the loss of Marvin Gaye.
Yes that’s what I remember reading.
Keep in mind msRoss and mr Robinson lived in the same neighborhood and she's known him since she was 13 years old
Miss Ross has a certain femme fatale and have always had that kind of enfluence when singing duets with her male peers in the business like Marvin Gaye,Smokey Robinson,Lionel Richie,Julio Eglesias,Rod Stewart....She is considered the highest quality of the female entertainer and a global icon.

Smokey and Diana were neighbors growing up in Detroit!
Yes indeed! This is going to be awesome.
Thanks Connie🙏🏾
You better believe it!
OMG these are two of my favorites and it looks like they shared more than music together!!!! Lol
Two as one...
Top ... of the top good music.
Been watching you for two years now. Love how you keep it coming!! Thank you for all you do Jamel!
Too of the greatest and still alive 🙌.

It definitely looks that they have a romantic connection
Smokey is currently on tour. Perhaps you’ll get a chance to see him.
I'd have that look on my face too if Smokey was singing to me like that!
COME ON NOW...LIONEL RICHIE & DIANA ROSS..."ENDLESS LOVE"!!...COME ON WITH IT, JAMEL!!💛
Love you Jamel..great reaction..like always..💓💓🙏
The song was written about Marvin Gaye, he was killed just a few years earlier by his Father.
Nothing like classic american music beautiful
This song was written for Marvin Gaye...post mortem. beautiful
I had forgotten this song. That’s for the memory Jamel. 🫶🏼
I saw Smokey Robinson at the Apollo Theater(!) in the late 90s/early 00s, and it's tied for the best show I've seen in my life. ALL of the panties in the room were off by the end, lol!! Someone spilled a drink on me and I didn't even care.
“They better go get a room!” 😂🤣😂
You mentioned looking at someone eye to eye talking to them and that singing to someone is another ball game. I know what you mean. I sang to my wife at our wedding I stayed composed while she cried. Thanks for posting this video.
Don't recall them being together. Love me some Smokey ! 🙏💙
This is actually about another Mowtown giant- the one and only Marvin Gaye after his death in 1984.
Well they went from 2 mics to sharing one mic pretty quickly. 😍 Although I don't think they were ever romantic, they clearly loved each other.
Angel’s voice.
If I'm not mistaken she wrote the song about Marvin Gaye. What an incredible duet. Both great artists in their own right.
Have you seen Smokey and Aretha on Soul Train doing an ad lib "Ooh Baby Baby"? A must see.
No clue if they were involved but they appear to have the chemistry for it.
Jamel_AKA_Jamal your imitation of them was so funny and cute! 😙💕
That was rather steamy 😅
Had no idea Smokey sang on this!!!

Excellence!
Lionel Ritchie Dancing on the Ceiling
Did you see Smokey on Daryls House...the whole episode is great!
This video is true to form, since Smokey not too long admitted they had an affair.
Sweet stuff Big J!! Your getting closer to the Iconic Anita Baker!
Diana is still Hot. They were great together.
Check out Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye My Mistake (audio only) though they recorded a whole album.
This is awesome! The only argument in my house is whose version of Ain't No Mountain high Enough is the best...im partial to Diana over Marvin Gaye and Tammy Tyrell! Love her voice!
I've got to say it's a tie. Tammy Terrell had a hell of a voice.
So you are off the hook. 👍 💋

Great duet. But Diana wrote this song to say how much she missed Marvin Gaye. He was killed trying to break up a fight between his parents.
👍❤❤
I think you need some “don’t take away my Heaven” -Aaron Neville
written for the late Marvin Gaye.
