I lived in Hamburg for six months in 1973 and so much has changed. I realize you can't talk about everything, but the Alster and the beautiful homes that surround it are a great place to stroll. More recently we went to Miniatur Wunderland (Miniature Wonderland) which is the largest model railway in the world, with over 50,000 meters of track in 1490 square meters. It is breath taking!
„Mein Hamburg, ich liebe Dich..." *sing* Thanks for that great video. It perfectly gets you a little view on what I really love about this most beautiful city in the world: although it is big and huge with lots of naval industrie around etc it is always calm in a special way. Lots of people around, but you still can relax and dwell in peace for a while. Whenever I am at the harbour such as at the Landungsbrücken or when walking trough the Volkspark it always gives me a feeling of coming home although I never lived there. And of course the people from Hamburg are great. They all know they have to be thankful to the people from all over the world that made Hamburg great and wealthy once and even today. This makes them very open minded and although lots of people from Hamburg have their roots in different places of the world they all are and allways stay Hamburg.
I think you should mention that Hamburg was a port of departure for not just German-American ancestors but also millions of German and Central and East European (Russian Empire, Austria-Hungary, Poland etc) Jews that came to America. I think a lot of Jews in the US might also not consider themselves German Americans even if their ancestors came from Germany itself.
welcome. he filmed episodes of Germany last year. He didnt and wont go to the cities you mentioned. For Season 9, he filmed Hamburg, Wittenberg, Erfurt, Bad Frankenhausen, Wuerzburg, Leizig ,Dresden and Frankfurt.

Marc C people in Hamburg use the bicycle a lot and it is easy to cycle there but I would say that Amsterdam is on a completely other level than any other city I have visited. The amount of bikes there is insane.

Hi there, this is Rick's assistant Evelynn. Yes, you will be able to watch the new episodes at www.ricksteves.com/tv. There will be one new episode posted each week. There are two Season 9 episodes up so far. Thanks for watching!
Rotterdam was bombed in a limited way for tactical reasons - the Dutch army made the city a battlefield, not the Germans. 884 people died. Hamburg was bombed as part of a systematic campaign to wipe German cities off the map which killed 42,600 according to the official (under)estimate. Over 1 million civilians died in the terror bombing of Germany.
When I was in Chicago, there were Igo rental cars in the parking lot. Register for the time you need and open the door with a special card waved over the windshield. Never needed a car with those around.
The vast majority of city-dwellers in Europe get by without cars, because of our modern and extensive public transport, and pedestrian- / bike-friendly streets. Travel more.

How is to cycle in and around Hamburg, compared to, say, Amsterdam? Thanks,

Make sure you go to St. Pauli if you are in Hamburg. You must see the graffiti and littered streets ! Its an experience. 😊
thanks allies to have bombard 80% of old town.... (like a lot of cities in europe) but hamburg make it a chance.
The biggest harbour city of Europe, Rotterdam, says thanks for the bombs as well. Only not to the allies...
not sure that people who lived in Rotterdam 70 years ago says thanks for the bombs....

thanks germany for starting ww2
A modern citizen without a car - oxymoron
When I was in Chicago, there were Igo rental cars in the parking lot. Register for the time you need and open the door with a special card waved over the windshield. Never needed a car with those around.

Yeah, in the endless planes of Kansas, that might be an oxymoron. Not in an urban center in Europe nor anywhere else around the world, really.
