I was an Australian kid who grew up in the 1980s / early 1990s. This has remained my favourite Australian show of all time. When I think back to my childhood, this show ALWAYS comes to mind. I especially like this opening because so many of my favourites are in it - Lorrae Desmond (Shirley was one of my favourites and I was devastated when her character died), Brian Wenzel, Shane Porteous, Josephine Mitchell (I loved her!), Joyce Jacobs, Gordon Piper and Syd Heylen (Bob and Cookie were awesome! They should not have left the show) and Joan Sydney (my favourite matron). Where is Fatso the wombat though? 😄
Great show. Me and me brudder used to watch it half an hour before leaving work in a shop. My favourite bits were Luke and Steve - the pretty girl from next door. I have a good bit of it on vhs but they are releasing it on dvd!
The outdoor scenes were all shot around the Hawkesbury, nw of Sydney. The opening shot is an old house across the road from Windsir court house. The shot at 0:55 is taken from Pitt Town looking down to Pitt Town Bottoms; and the hospital is an old house in Oakville, near Arndell High School.

This brings back memories! Used to watch this in the UK. All I can remember are three things: 1. This theme tune 2. Joyce Jacobs' character saying "You'll lose pounds!" and another character clunkily correcting her to "kilos" 3. There was a wombat
Apparently about 8 million people used to watch this when the population of Australia was only 15 million.That's pretty impressive. I must confess I've never watched a full episode of it.
