If they took the time to actually develop the characters instead of just trying to skip to the action it COULD be awesome. Instead they try and shortcut all that and I don't give a flying f**k when anyone dies because they didn't give the time and investment to these people for me to care. Including Stewart's character tbh. You can make the most awesome gfx and scares and what not, but if there is no investment in the story it's all for nothing.

This movie was so much better than I had expected. It didn't waste a MOMENT like other movies that go half an hour into boring shit nobody cares about. Every moment was used for something. And it fucked with your head. Imagine being underwater at the same time as this thing.
I thought this movie was very competently put together. A good screenplay, excellent special effects, and solidly in the horror genre with all the right techniques employed for a balanced and enjoyable ride through a creepy underwater environment. Highly recommended!
How is it a good screenplay? Maybe for ADHD sufferers who like life on fast play, but for the rest of us it doesn't work to skip over proper character introductions and what not. I literally didn't care when anyone died, because the screenplay didn't invest the time and energy into making me care. You need to start slow and then drop everyone in it - instead the screenplay tries to skip all the important setup. It's not like Alien spends the entire film doing this, but it does enough that I do care. It's a shame, because otherwise I can see that they put a lot of effort into making it look good.
Only thing really missing was a beginning segment that allowed us to get attached to the characters before killing them off. Otherwise it was a really good movie. I wasn't expecting it, but it was good.

Or is just monster that was simply named after the great old one since he have some similarities with the old god. I don't think that the average person is really going to get Lovecraft mythos - so they just went with the simplest version of Cthulhu to make it easier for the Pacific Rim and Godzilla crowd to enjoy. Hollywood is all about the lowest common denominator in the audience - something that Lovecraft will never fall under.

Went into this movie totally blind. So it did scare me. For one the thalassophobia is enough. Two, not knowing what the creatures were. And they kept getting bigger until OMG! Finally, not really knowing what it was until youtube videos like this a reading about it. Cthulhu was a big and nice surprise!

The only thing I didn't like bout this movie was it was so murky its a bit hard to make out the Cthulhu. But hey.. it IS called Underwater and its suppose to be murky. I would wish they would do a sequel with even bigger budget. But.. somehow I won't hold my breath (no pun intended). idk how well it did at box office. But like most of the comments here. An under-rated movie. I like the approach they made with this movie and didn't take more of The Meg path.

This flick was kinda campy but enjoyable. My main gripe is them walking on the ocean floor SEVEN miles down! C'mon man, that shit's just impossible owing to the enormous pressure overhead. Any suit worn would've weighed a ton owing to the metals required. 2nd gripe was the monster reveal could've been a lil better illuminated, so we could get a good idea of its size to scale later on. Overall a 7/10...IMO

The film has his moments but failed to convey the true feeling of a Lovecraftian story. There are to much action scenes and too few calm scenes in which the protagonists realise the utter horror they are facing. Nobody seems to care that there is a gigantic monster living under water for eons. Most people including me would immediately panic. The protagonists merely realise that this thing wants to kill them but don't think about the shocking consequences this could have for humanity. Moreover the film is way to short. Just at the moment when cthulhu appears the film is allready is finished.

it was a good movie, but that's not Cthulhu. If it were, everyone would be going mad, dreaming of sleeping gods and impossible geometry, long before actually laying eyes on mega Squidward

I really liked this movie. It definitely was well made. Also, Kristen Stewart was oddly hot with short hair.
The film has his moments but failed to convey the true feeling of a Lovecraftian story. There are to much action scenes and too few calm scenes in which the protagonists realise the utter horror they are facing. Nobody seems to care that there is a gigantic monster living under water for eons. Most people including me would immediately panic. The protagonists merely realise that this thing wants to kill them but don't think about the shocking consequences this could have for humanity. Moreover the film is way to short. Just at the moment when cthulhu appears the film is allready is finished.
