Rewilding Britain - hopes to rewild the common tree frog
In nature-depleted Britain, we’ve lost a wide array of native species. Carefully considered reintroduction of those now missing can play a key role in rewilding and help nature heal itself.
Frogs go through several stages in their life cycle. At each cycle, frogs play a crucial role in the food chain, both as predator and prey - they transfer energy from invertebrates to predators higher up the food chain. They are also bioindicators and help us understand the quality of an ecosystem.
Tree frogs have disappeared from the UK. but they are common across Europe. It is thought that the draining of wetlands, where the frogs breed is believed to have reduced numbers. We should have vast wetlands, but instead, the land has been used for farming, housing or another human purpose. The draining of the UK’s wetlands has been an ecological disaster. As reintroductions of species such as the beaver have increasingly gained ground in the UK, the habitats needed for tree frogs to thrive again are being created.
Conservationists would like to help restore the species to the trees, bushes and wetlands where they are missing. Derek Gow, has been involved with the successful effort to bring beavers back to England is among many people in the UK who keep and breed tree frogs, and hopes they can be reintroduced.
The 25 Year Environment Plan states it will provide opportunities for the reintroduction of formerly native species, but applications to reintroduce a formerly native species have to comprehensively demonstrate the benefits how any potential impacts would be managed.
Dereck Gow told the independent - it’s already happening, but it’s a case of whether you want to do it properly and for good ecological reasons. There already are colonies of tree frogs in the New Forest, Torquay and other locations which are doing well.

They aren't the only extinct native herptofauna, among others there's:
      The agile frog
      The moor frog
      The European pond turtle
      The Aesculapian snake
      The western green lizard

Shouldn't we be putting more effort into conserving our existing species before trying reintroduction ?

My thoughts exactly. Most of our SSSI sites are damaged and we are in danger of losing once common species such as curlew, spotted fly catcher, marsh fritillary butterfly and several orchid species. If we can't protect even the best sites, such as SSSI's, how can we even think of large scale reintroductions of species that have been absent for centuries to a degraded landscape that has mostly changed beyond recognition?

    What
Tree frog are extinct in UK
This country is really that Bad
moose, bison, Wolf, Bear at least i Can understand why they disapear
    But
Beaver, mink, lynx even boar, red squirrel, pine Martens and tree frog
Even USA cities are more natural and have more wildlife
    And you
struggle to save otter, eagle and wild cat
Even France have Bear, lynx and wolf and France is really Bad at ecology or animal ethic, or ethic and decency in general

I grew up in the UK and witnessed a decline from seeing insects everywhere and hearing birds all day to it becoming like a barren wasteland with little sign of life. It changed a lot in just 20 years. I live in Texas now and there is a plethora of wildlife here but there has been a dramatic decrease in insects too. You used to hear bugs hitting the window of the car constantly while driving in summer but that never happens anymore.
