I bought an old drawknife a few months back and have been wanting to tune it up, but haven't had the courage to touch it in case I ruined it. Thanks for this, very much appreciated. Looking forward to part 2 also.
Great video. I bought a draw knife at a flea market some time ago and it has rust and pits on it too that I couldn't remove with my water stones. Looking forward to getting rid of them using the grinding wheel method and further polish up the blade!
I picked up my first knife recently and looked it up.. Turns out it was made in the 1830's and is very well built! I do want to touch up the blade even though it's pretty sharp.
You can save yourself a lot of sandpaper by using WD-40 and a Brillo pad or angle grinder with a wire cup brush to take off corrosion before sharpening. Having a hollow grind It's a nice touch but not necessary unless you are a serious wood carver. The grind is more for preventing substrate from sticking kind of like flute grinds in the side of your chef knife. But that little wooden guide is a new trick for me which I'm going to try out personally. Thanks for that!

I found a barton knife at a fleamarket paid $7.00. Th problem is it will not sharpen. I have used files, stones, papers, honing oil etc. I'm afraid to use my bench grinder because i dont have a tool mount and don't want to ruin it. have you ever had this problem?
For a drawknife that has a slight curve to it from handle to handle like the 3rd one you showed in the beginning, would you go at that on the grinder to “flatten” the back as well? This has confused me because the back can never truly be flat with the curve that the drawknife was made with, and I’ve spent a lot of time just using the tool in a sub-optimal state because I’ve been unsure of the best way to regrind it. There’s more info out there on restoring straight drawknives than the curved ones, which makes sense because they’re probably more common. This one’s a nice Greenlee, otherwise in great shape but I’ve been hesitant to really be aggressive with its restoration because I want to do it right, with the curve it has.
belt sander :-) , grinder works great for folks that have done it 2000 times , us clumsy people start her off with 120 grit , and slowly move up to 600/1000 :-) , you can shave with the thing , and best of all its very forgiving if you have a ..."whoops" :-D
Please, please, please, I think you are very good but your accent and speech are not good. Most of the time you are just mumbling. This is especially bad on video No 2

yes, you do it the same way. You only flatten it from front to back not side to side
