  • CNM Technologies is a German high-tech company, which is specialised on the development, production, and marketing of Carbon nanomembranes (CNMs) based with research and development activities in Bielefeld, Germany.
Since 2011, CNM Technologies in Bielefeld has been working on making the world's thinnest "polymer films" usable for the pharmaceutical industry, medical technology, electronics, the energy industry and nanotechnology, among others. It finances this with equity and venture capital from various investors and numerous research projects. The NRW.Europa funding expert team was able to help ZENIT with the acquisition of a project for battery and fuel cell applications.
    NRW.Europa support in obtaining funding
Shortly after the start of the water project, Schnieders took advantage of an intensive consultation by ZENIT funding expert Tim Schüürmann on the "FET Innovation LaunchPad" funding programme. The aim of this programme is to bring research results from ongoing or recently completed EU projects to market maturity. For example, market observations or studies, the initiation of industrial contacts or the securing of patents are funded.
After the successful application, CNM Technologies was able to evaluate the potential of CNM composite membranes in battery and fuel cell applications for nine months under the project name CNergy. Among other things, they looked at where exactly the problems lie within the industry, experimented and drew up a feasibility study. Because CNMs have a high proton and lithium ion permeability and contribute to doubling the lifetime of symmetrical Li-metal cells, Schnieders sees enormous potential. "Indeed, if we combine these findings with our know-how in producing large-area CNM composite membranes, a completely new technology emerges: the use of ultra-thin CNMs as separator membranes in next-generation metal batteries or proton exchange membranes (PEM) in battery and fuel cell applications. Thinner membranes promise faster and more selective ion transport, leading to smaller, more powerful and more reliable energy storage devices. These are precisely the possibilities we explored in the EU-funded project," Schnieders summarises the project results.
"I am already looking forward to further NRW.Europa support and advice for follow-up project applications. For deep-tech companies like us, there are funding programmes that the team knows quite well, helping us to take the next steps and achieve our goal of becoming an important part of the value chain around carbon nanomembrane applications."
