      Frank Lopez the cost of rent doesn’t stay the same, it goes up every person or animal you put in the home. It could start at 1500 per month but then add a dog kids or family and all of a sudden your at 2000$ a month.

      That is pretty smart, but I guess you have to do it on the down-low. Once someone found out you would probably get run off pretty quickly. It is like at Walmart. You do it stealthily you can do it for quite a while. But you get these knuckleheads that pull out there awnings, set up their lawn furniture and grill and sit out there all day with their kids running crazy in the parking lot, or in the store etc.

Doesn't even make any sense! Except that she just wanted to get interviewed for this program...I'm pretty sure she's a total fake besides, back when she started "living in her car", which was so fake (watch her earlier videos and you'll see why since she always looked like she just jumped into her car to do the video, and she is a film maker, soooo....)

    • @cornbreadthedog
      @cornbreadthedog 6 років тому +7

      I lived out of my car for 3 years and I would say this: To save money and to cut down on living expenses, stay at home if you can and help your parents. Paying your parents 300-400 bucks in rent is way better than paying over a thousand bucks or more for a small apartment somewhere. Also, if you have single girlfriends or family members who are working or have some sort of reliable income, look into being roommates and split the cost of living in half. Save your money. Cut down your overhead and spending. Get rid of all credit card debt as soon as you can. You seem really cool. Choose your paths..... wisely. All the best. Peace.

    As someone who has personally lived in a car for months (not by choice) I know the TWO biggest down falls...Its HOT as HELL or COLD as HELL. That would be why I wouldn't or couldn't. I applaud someone who can commit to a journey like this, but as she said its not for everyone. Personally, I think a traditional tiny home makes more sense in many ways...you can still keep a minimalist lifestyle while still having the ability to actually have another person over like a boyfriend/friend/etc, for the cost she has put into the van she is very close if not able to have had a traditional tiny house. The gas the van would eat up with the extra weight is going to get expensive, not to mention when your HOUSE/VAN breaks down....UGH!!! I would see it much easier to have a tiny home with the option to have a small car, scooter, bike etc for regular transportation. Obviously this is one of the cases of extreme tiny living - but I don't think long term for anyone this can be comfortable, at some point that is looking worse then a prison cell.

    • @Mastemine498
      @Mastemine498 7 років тому +2

      LoveAlways Makeup some townships and cities don't allow for tiny houses actually and surprisingly many don't, and some do and charge a lot for the property tax even though it's a small house, and there are some areas that allow it though but maybe not near her job location. She said she is a photographer as well, so she can easily travel this way and stay for extended periods without paying lots in rent and still having to worry about bills back at home.

      LoveAlways Makeup I've been living in my van for a year and a half in Sweden and the key to keeping warm is insulation and a webasto diesel heater. I've had nights of -15 C and had it 20 C in my van or wherever I want to set the thermostat. People that say living in a van sucks just don't know how to innovate and be resourceful. Better for those people to get a job and a small apartment in a neighborhood that they hate working for a boss that they can't stand.

    People used to live in the boxes, or on their horses back then. Now everyone has this ego that people should only live in a stationary bigger box where you pay taxes, mortgages etc. This woman is actually very intelligent, living off grid and any money she makes is profit. Been there. Done that.
    Hyundai Elantra GT hatchback
    Chevy conversion van
    Astro passenger minvan
    And now a high top Chevy conversion van.
    Start off sleeping in your car while you still have housing.
    See if that's doable.
    Pack & live for a week in your driveway.
    Only then can you shop according to what you NEED not want.
    Need = $Available
    Want = $someday
    Factor gas mileage if you plan to go from place to place
    Consider stealth options... conversion van says I'M IN HERE.
    But a mini van or Astro says I MIGHT BE A LOCAL RESIDENT WITH KIDS WHO PLAY SOCCER AND IM NOT A THREAT.
    What do you need?
    Park sleep up and go.
    What do you want?
    Park, open, cook, music, lawn chairs, sleep.
    The second one will have cops visiting quickly.
    Essentially
    Park, sleep, up and go (at least repark so your vehicle is a ghost)
    Shower?
    Gym membership, Marinas, aquatic center, community pool ($5 visit worth it), truck stops ($12! Ouch)
    Food?
    Plug in Coleman cooler runs off battery - not for long term parkers.
    $20 cooler with ice every other day from hotels, grocery store self serve beverage center.
    Shop for today + 1 day.
    Don't buy a week's worth of fridge stuff.
    Cooking?
    Coleman portable propane burner in a park or public campsite park.
    Cook, end, repack. Don't be THAT GUY.
    Dog?
    Yes, more friendly but also have barking at noises and morning walk ritual. But have a buddy and some to bike with.
    Get a job.
    Volunteer or get a toss-away job to keep you busy sane and financially stable/even.
    Temp agencies - local events need ppl.
    Don't linger.
    Don't casue a mess.
    Don't be loud.
    Basically, BE A GHOST 👻
    The less they remember you, the less they have a problem with you.

Big difference. us homeowners or renters buy into the fact that we need cat litter and such giving our money away. With the minimalist lifestyle it uses the environment for free. And it’s healthier. No funny smells inside the vehicle. 🤗💐🌲🐾

    I thought this was illegal.. I have lived in a van before with my mom and a few other people, and the cops stopped us every single day, telling us we weren't aloud to sleep in a vehicle, we were always on the move and forced to spend gas money and had to insist we were on a road trip.We could only park on private properties, and always had cops banging on the windows at night, the way they saw it living in a vehicle is the same as being homeless, and apparently its illegal to be homeless.. The stigma of sleeping in a vehicle is intense. Does this lady not experience that? Is she actually allowed to do what she's doing? I wonder if it's a rich vs poor thing? Maybe if you have money but choose to sleep in a van to be eccentric or innovative it's ok, but if you're forced to live in a vehicle out of poverty it's not ok.

    • @NymphetaminexXxGrrrl
      @NymphetaminexXxGrrrl 7 років тому

      We weren't parking in front of houses, or being rowdy. We often parked in the middle of nowhere. It was the cops who said we had to be on private property so we could only sleep in a van in the driveway of someone who let us stay there, but we didn't know many people. We would never have parked in a nice neighborhood or in front of some random persons houses. No one was near enough to complain, cops just stop whenever they see a vehicle that isn't moving.

      and finding nice safe comfortable places to park more and more they wont allow camper vans rvs etc to park overnight on the streets (tho they allow regular cars, go figure)also if it breaks down and needs servicing then your homeless for sure, i would opt for a small travel trailor or truck camper (if you have a truck)that way you can still live in it whilethe truck gets serviced. and many state parks and many campsites aer not that expensive if your dry camping.

    Unfortunately many large cities are pricing out “undesirables”. Meaning anyone who is low/lower income can’t afford the cost of living plus rent unless they are employed by 2-3 jobs. 2-3 jobs and you still can hardly get ahead plus can’t enjoy life at all, as you’re basically working round the clock just to survive. This is the reason people have roommates, sublet or rent out rooms in larger cities. They can’t afford to live on the high cost of rent without help. I’m not a millennial, but they’ve inherited a bad deal after others generations have benefited from greed. So many more will end up off the grid in tiny houses, van life, & other alternative living means as the future progresses. She’s ahead of her time, but frowned upon by conventional society. Not everyone wants to pay rent and be stuck to a mortgage for their entire lives.

      YellowGold Goddesss untrue. If you have full coverage they must repair the vehicle back to conditions it had before, like if a truck that carries refrigerated foods gets destroyed they have to repair the AC in the back and any insulation and such. If you only have liability insurance they don't. But full coverage protects you and everyone and everything inside that is part of the vehicle.

    • @yellowgoldgoddess
      @yellowgoldgoddess 7 років тому +19

      The bed and furniture isn't typically in any vehicle so those things aren't covered at all. When's last time you seen an actual full size bed and dresser drawer inside a van ? They're not going to cover items that have nothing to do with the vehicle itself the van did not come with a bed and a dresser and the other miscellaneous things she has inside the vehicle.

    So here's the thing...I understand people doing this in like uber expensive California or if they are an extreme sport person who crisscrosses the country for sport, but I'm from Ohio and lived in Columbus for 20 yrs. There are VERY reasonable places to rent or even buy condos in good safe neighborhoods...she is either too picky or was living in the wrong areas...or would not compromise. I mean she is going to be in to that van for a good 20k...that's 20% down on a 100k condo which is still doeable in the Columbus metro area. She is also very handy...she could buy a fixer upper and renovate it and build equity quick. There are also many places to rent for $800 or so a month in nice areas...or there are TONS of advertisements by other young women looking to share a house or nice apt. She had other options. I feel there is more than economics behind this decision...just doesn't add up.

      She could just be sick of paying rent. I know I am. You can sign a lease for a reasonable apartment but things can happen. You might lose a job and find one that doesn't pay as much. Then you struggle. Then you can't even save money to move. I'm just sick of paying out so much.

    • @benfranklin3638
      @benfranklin3638 5 років тому

      @Don P "Fact" and "probably" really don't belong in the same argument....I'm just pointing out that there were certainly other options. And yes I heard what she said about the student loans and I don't buy it...she either had a small balance left or there is more to the story. 42k over 12 months is $3,500/mo...no way. And by the way to give you an example of alternatives. I DID pay off 85k in student loans quickly...in fact my last payment was a 67k check to the bank. I bought a 4 unit apartment building...lived in one unit and rented out the others for a few years, fixed the units up as people moved out, and sold for a nice profit 4 years later - 67k check...and I did not live in a van...Like I said there are other options.

    Her idea of minimalism is to put 15 grand into a van on top of what the van cost. One could minimize more than that... this is a pretty ritzy setup compared to what I've seen.

    A friend of mines parents sold their house when they were 50. They were able to pay cash for a brand new dually truck AND a 36' long fifth wheel camper home. Their main "home" was at a KOA where they built a porch and their rent was$200/mth For that, they got water/sewer/ electricity and cable. The home had a full shower, full kitchen, a huge master, a full size bed over the fifth wheel, a nice living area AND they could come and go as they pleased. Traveling up north during summer and South during winter.

      I’m guessing she can’t afford to buy a piece of land to put it on. There’s an episode of Last Week Tonight about mobile homes that I recommend watching here on UA-cam. Long story short, mobile homes are a terrible investment, and the owners of such homes can end up in really dire financial straits. They get stuck paying outrageous rents to live in trailer parks because moving causes significant structural damage to the so-called “mobile” home. ua-cam.com/video/jCC8fPQOaxU/v-deo.html

    • @jilliand6591

      There is no right or wrong way to live your life. There is a whole community of vehicle dwellers and as long as you can meet all your basic needs then there is no reason this would be more of an unhealthy lifestyle.personally I think having to live paycheck to paycheck and barely able to pay for rent, food and all your other bills is way more unhealthy with all the stress that comes with it. Instead of paying rent I can use that money to pay activities and things that actually make me happy. Living in a vehicle give me freedom. I can spend my money however I wish, I can move wherever I want nor am I tied to a job or location.

    The problem with making a van a house is eventually that van won't hold up over the years. Without a proper roof, foundation etc... things rust, rot wear and tear. The amount of time and money to keep something 15 years old on the road that you use 24/7 as a home could be costly. There's just so many pro's and con's because a cabin off grid would be much more sound than a van home but then you're sacrificing socializing and traveling and convenience for food, internet and other services. But you know what's crazy...right now there are thousands of people living in chineese cities who pay like 200 bucks a month rent to living in a cage not even big enough to stretch out in. It's scary that society can be pushed that far for the general populace to be subdued into that kind of a living condition.

      @uppermostking02 6 років тому +7

      Well that's an easy answer because not a lot of people are selling already converted vans. Even if there were people that were doing this it would cost way more because you have to think about the labor that they put in to make that converted van so it's that price on top of the actual vehicle price it just wouldn't make any sense.

    Delinquent student loans cosigned by parents which cannot be discharged in bankruptcy.
