What nice running your three engines are! I'm green with envy. (Stuart Turner green, of course!
I'm restoring a P5M in Southern California. It originally served as the auxilliary engine in a 32' Cheoy Lee sloop built in 1960, and kept on San Francisco Bay in Northern California until decommissioned in the 1990s. It will go into my 14' Lawley yacht tender built in 1928. It should be a good match-up.

I'm looking to restore an R3M. Would you be able to give any advice or point us in the right direction for gathering some real info on them? I've noticed there are parts and instruction manuals available from new, I'm wondering if there's any other source.

Hi there, Thanks for getting in touch. I would say it’s worth getting a manual as it does give some useful advice and drawings. From there I’d get in touch with Stuart Turner Bits and Pieces- lots of parts available for a rebuild. What sort of condition is your engine in? You may find taking it apart and giving it a good clean is all it needs.

@@Carvel-ou7by Good afternoon, yes that sounds a plan. I'm yet to purchase one, I had someone bet me to one a fw days ago. And yes hopefully it's a case of just giving a good clean, understanding the engine and get it looking and running nice. I'm also in search of any other engine I think could fit in the back of an MX5😅

Hello Sir! What stunning engines you have, I have a turner p55m in a lovely boat I just purchased. Could you tell me if I can’t turn the engine with the crank is it seized??? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you very much! I’ve not had much experience with the twin cylinder engines, but if you can’t turn it over with the starting crank chances are it could be seized. If you try and turn the flywheel directly, is there any movement at all? This can be a clue as to where the seize is

@@Carvel-ou7by thanks for your kind reply and advice. I shall see if there is any movement in the fly wheel. Logic abandoned me today and I left it utterly deflated. I’m going to take it out and do a full restoration. It’s not like you can really break them is it? If you put it right it will run! Do you think pouring a little petrol/mix down the plugs might be worth a try? Many thanks again.

Absolutely, so long as the frost hasn’t got to them they’re pretty bullet proof! I can relate to your situation, the P5m in this video was totally seized when I got it, very frustrating as it prevents much progress being made! In my case it was the piston that had seized in the cylinder, so I poured diesel down it and left to soak for a few weeks. Heated it a bit, soaked a bit more and then a block of wood on the piston and gave it a hit and it was free. It’s well worth the fight, I’d suggest perhaps getting the cylinder head off so you can see what you’re up against!
