It was essentially called the golden generation because of the U-20 World Championship victory over Brazil in the finals. USA 94 in the same group as Italy (tournament finalist). France 98 is in the same group as Germany. 02, several national teams were easily ahead of Portugal.
It was considered a golden generation by the Portuguese. And that was related to the group quality, youth World Cup titles and expectations, a lot of it based on a National feeling regarding this group of players. It had nothing to do with external views, regarding stats and what not. Just ask a portuguese or two about it and you will understand.
94 they were still too young, 98 was a failure yes but they had Germany to qualify, Rui Costa was sent off for “tekinf too long to walk off” as he was substituted. Semi final 2000, runners up 2004 and semi final of 2006. Not bad for a small country.
@Vera150607 USA were ahead of Portugal were they? They went 3-0 down to them and ultimately knocked out by them and likewise 2014 they got through again at Portugal's expense (I predicted the latter).

For our reality and such a small country this was a golden generation. At the time we only qualified to 2 major competition wc 66 and euro 84.

USA were ahead of Portugal were they? They went 3-0 down to them and ultimately knocked out by them and likewise 2014 they got through again at Portugal's expense (I predicted the latter).
A disaster for Barça. Too soft for the highest level
Too soft for the highest level ? That's why he won the 2004 CL with FC Porto !
With all my respect to a legendary club like Porto FC (btw Madjer is one of my idols), playing for Real Madrid, Man U, Bayern or Barça is a fifferent challenge. The pressure is in another level.
The same circunstances involve national teams like England or Brazil. Those shirts wheigh a loy
One more thing. The 2004 CL was not the hardest edition to win. Take a look at the round of 16
