    Just installed a gmrs according to your instructions. I wrapped the end of the power cord with a small amount of electrical tape, and then sprayed with vegetable oil to reduce drag. It slid right in the hole😮😅😅. I really appreciate.

    Thanks for this how-to video. I installed a Yaesu FTM-400XDR today and your video made it simple to take on. The only thing I did different was use the grommet on the opposite side near the battery for the power cables.

    How’s the swr? Might want to check. Before I got a meter, I put the antenna on a corner (mag mount) and it was “ working” with my HT, thought I noticed my HT would warm up. I got an SWR meter and found that my SWR was near 2!! So some “fine tuning” on placement got me ack down to 1 (or near enough).

    The NMO cable in the link in the description is 16.75 ft. Is this the length you used? If so was it too long requiring you to coil some of it or was it about the correct length?

    There is another option on the passenger side that is fairly easy to access as well to pass the wires through the firewall. Looks same as on driver's side. Did not encounter foam on this path in my 2022 LT.

    Very useful; I just got a 2023 suburban, looking to figure out how best to do my install; I'm not sure if I'll do it all exactly the same as you did, but I suspect mostly the layout is close enough to the same that this will be super useful.
    I'm hoping you'll answer one of us about where you're pulling power from =] You didn't indicate that you pulled anything new through the firewall, so I'm wondering if you found something already there which is good enough or if you skipped something =]

      @@Hornman120well, kinda... I haven't figured out where inside to put it yet, but we're going on a trip soon and my two oldest boys (14yo and 12yo) just got their licenses, so I think it's time to finish =]
      What I've done so far is I installed the NMO mount and then I ran it actually through the hinge of the door -- there is just enough room in there that it closes without pinching anything and then I ran it through the trim and it's nearly invisible. I have it ending in a little pocket on the driver's side of the center console, I was thinking I could possibly slide a radio in there with a remote control head in a cup holder mount. I'm not sure I can still fit power through the same side through the trim, however.
      For pulling the power there is a bolt on the passenger side under the hood which has a huge cable from the - terminal of the battery -- I connected to that, then I opened the cover on top of the battery and attached the + to one of the terminals in there.

    How well is that mounting location working after 7 months? Repeaters and any Simpex? I'm very interested in going more stealth on my new truck, my old truck I mounted exactly like you but using a ~32" NMO diamond antenna.

    • @TheDadNerd
      @TheDadNerd  Рік тому

      It has been the best mounting option I have had in a long time. One added benefit is that it does not leave any mark on your hood as compared to a clip hood mount I had used on a previous vehicle. I would definitely recommend it. I will say that the antenna does not quite have the reach my prior larger antenna had but still has plenty of range for the repeaters in my area.

    Hey bud,I just purchased a 2022 Silverado 2500HD.
    Like your installation.
    My question is how did you snake the coax inside for the antenna?

    • @TheDadNerd
      @TheDadNerd  2 роки тому

      The coax I had allowed me to screw the outer part of the end off. So I was left with just the center conductor on the end of the coax. Punched a hole wit the metal rod and then was able to force the coax through just enough to grab it on the other side of the wall from inside the cab. Took a bit of playing but it worked. I was going to use electrician fish tape if I couldn’t reach it. Good luck!

    Hey NerdDad, how do you like that NEW Compactenna? I have heard alot of good things about it, but I would like to know your opinion about it. I was going to buy a Comet dual Band antenna which is much taller, but if this is a good as what I have read and seen in video's I may have to go this route. I too am installing into my new truck. Please let me know your honest review of that Compactenna please. Thank you. Love your video.

    • @TheDadNerd
      @TheDadNerd  Рік тому +1

      Hey Christian! I have really enjoyed this antenna. Biggest pros for me are the fact that I can pull in and out of my garage without it dragging along the top and its sleek look. As comparted to larger antennas it has a bit shorter range but that is to be expected and it is still more than enough to hit all repeaters in my area. The SWR is also great on multiple bands. If things like height and looks are important it is fantastic option. If those things are not important to you, you would get better performance out of a longer antenna. As with all ham antennas, it is all a compromise.

      @@TheDadNerd Still thinking on that antenna. However I now have a different question for you. I am thinking of now buying that TYT Quad band radio. I have seen alot of good and bad video's on you tube about it, but you as a user, how do you feel about it? How long have you had it, I have heard that they just stop working after a few months, THAT I am worried about, don't want to buy a radio that won't last. so I respect your opinion, so I am interested in what you have to say.
