I’d like to add… The new wave is everyone selling a course; and most of these “teachers” are just aiming for their own financial goals and don’t care about you learning a thing.

It's a lot easier to make 250k a year by convincing people you make 250k/year, and then selling 1000 people a course for $250 to 'teach' them how they too, can learn how to make 250k a year.. Get ready. I'm 90% sure FStoppers is about to come out with another photobiz course in the next few months. :P

@@akincarlson6817 A year ago, I called out a guy for claiming he charges $8,000 for headshots, said he's doing so to build his rep to sell a tutorial. Years ago I turned my beloved photography into a business, which became a job, which became a disappointment when the economy tanked in 08. No one had money for photos and would screen cap my work - yes even with a watermark across the subjects face. I liquidated my company and went back to corporate America. You are so spot on about people chasing "likes" and "monetization". They sold the soul of their art to feed the algorithm. After a multiyear hiatus I am back. Making photographs of what I want and what I like. I am in love with photography again. It's soul has been restored. Without any "be sure to like and subscribe". Thanks for posting.

      same for me and videography.
I don’t even post most of my stuff anymore. I record and edit, color grade, and enjoy it a bit. Maybe share it with friends in a message. Then I let it go. The time spent shooting, editing, and fine tuning was the entire fun.
I can’t imagine doing it for work. Imagine having to make a video when you really just don’t want to that day.

I still remember the first darkroom print and how excited I was at the process of creating an image, and how I couldn't wait to make another and another. It was so hard to let the next batch of negatives dry before I viewed them, I just wanted to see how they turned out.
Photography is an amazing craft. You have a great message here in that it's not just about money. It's passion, striving to get better, and learning.

It's a consumer's market today where people are quick to join a popular trend for money. Eventually people will become annoyed with constantly being bombarded with ads to buy things they dont need and finally unplug again. Simple things like board games, puzzles, and gardening will reign supreme once more.

I agree. I have been into photography since I was in high school taking photos for the school yearbook back in 2003. I see so many of these new guys pop up that have no true passion for photography or any real skill but only do it as a content creator. They teach so many bogus ideas, like spray and pray, misuse of gear, etc…. They only pull views because they only take photos of half naked women. The platform is getting sad, so I had to filter out a bunch of the phonies.

  • @TheArachKing
    @TheArachKing 4 місяці тому

I can really resonate with this. I’ve always been into photography, and really want to do product photography as a side business. I have years of experience in loads of other stuff barring photography, mostly art, and understanding the difference between having skill and learning a craft to sell your stuff and learning the absolute bare minimum and expecting to make a living is what honestly destroys a lot of things.
We live in an era now unfortunately though where people think that because they can take mediocre snaps on a smartphone without thought and make it “look pretty” they can do a thing and it should be monetised.
Personally though, having years of experience learning composition, colour, value, how to tell a story in an image, and how to capture an audience with an image is the most important thing.
Picked up a canon Demi 28mm last week, it has major problems and no light seal but just getting off the phone and shooting with this really makes you think about your shots, your framing, your craft.
What we need are more photography docs and such, actually using photography as a medium to tell a story, and with a shift to that I genuinely believe that you are forced to learn your craft and not just sell a mediocre image taken on a camera that is way too expensive and feature rich for your level of skill

Hi Prince..Talking about the forgotten word CRAFT...maybe the camara technology has created this void in photography craft. For example take shutter speed, in my old Nikon D3 days there was no such thing as image stabilisation, so achieve an acceptable level of sharpness you need to know how to use the camera. I can remember taking to a fellow photographer who also had a D3 and a 70-200 2.8. she said I can't use this lens because I can never achieve sharpness. The reason was she did not realise that you had to wait for the focus point to settle down because of the primitive stabilisation employed in that particular lens. Its only when I chat to a beginner do I realise the huge amount go knowledge that I have gained over the post 15 years or so. It is my understanding and lime you commented, The craft has been forgotten about. Let alone talking about light. Great post bud :-)

It takes some deep searching to get to be a part of the Indy Mogul generation I was once a part of. It's no longer 2008-2014, so to get a start on those things from the eyes of a new filmmaker/photographer may be a bit complicated. I believe it may be a bit more difficult now in 2024 to get to where someone like me is at on their own now. Young people go into this getting bullied out of it for wanting to make their dream horror film with their politically minded teachers believing they have ulterior motives. Essentially the internet was once the trickle down of the film industry, and 2005-2015 was like had it been a water source of valuable information, but now people are more focused on selling rather than helping for free. A lot of resources that would indeed save someone a lot of hassle has shut down and is no longer available. My last point is that communities are a lot more harsher than they used to be to newcomers vouching more for gatekeeping than helping amateurs. It disappoints me in how the internet has changed from being a library to now a bookstore. The educational tool of using books and the internet now has been kind of overly saturated now with gear reviews.

I agree with your view on this topic. Economic conditions, especially during inflation, are driving people towards seemingly easier ways to earn money.
My aim has always been to inspire passion in photography by simplifying concepts like ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. i've noticed a trend where novices skip these fundamentals and jump directly into professional work like portrait sessions. This approach, while practically challenging, isn't inherently negative, but it does create a dilemma. They often approach me for advice on pricing, prioritizing earnings over artistic development. This underscores how economic pressures are influencing people to view photography as a quick income source rather than an art form. Also, the narrative on platforms like TikTok, which suggests that success in photography only requires a camera, Instagram, and an LLC, further dilutes the essence of the art.

    • @PrinceMeyson
      @PrinceMeyson  4 місяці тому

You said it right, photography just feels like a cash grab for a lot of people right now. The soul of the art seems to have left the younger photographers coming in. We can thank the low barrier to entry for this problem.

I saw a guy claiming he made some high number of dollars from landscape photography in a video where he shows how long it took him to get there and how. Well as you watch the video and see his financial break down you realize he did not in fact make that money from photography. Only a tiny percentage came from actually selling prints or photography services to clients. And all those sales were for sure only due to the youtube channel. The vast majority of his income came from his youtoube AD and sponsorship revenue and distant the second biggest source was his "workshops" which again only had traction because of the the you tube channel. He wasn't a pro photographer at all but a pro youtuber who's topic happened to be landscape photography. When I made a comment pointing this out, it was deleted and my comments stopped showing up for anyone but me on his channel. I think in his mind he really was a pro landscape photographer and simply couldn't face the truth despite the numbers being right in front of him. The truth is was/is successful because he was/is a good you tube personality not because of his photography. His photography wasn't bad. It was good. But the truth is no matter how good you are, there is almost no real market for landscape photos now thanks to the internet. To make a title and video saying Lanscape photography can get you all that money, I forget the exact amount but it was enough for good upper middle class living in the U.S., is disingenuous when it all came from your youtube channel.

I agree with everything you're saying. Before clicking on the video I had a hunch on what Prince was going to be discussing. I've been doing photography for about 4-5 years professionally now and I can agree with the fact that there is a disconnect in the learning community as well as content creation from previous years to now.
Also at 5:10-5:40 Prince ain't miss a beat. Joined a webinar on photography and a photographer gave like 2 nuggets of wisdom in the midst of a 2 hour webinar just to pitch a $1000+ course and homey had some mid pictures. Nah bro I'm sorry. There's a disconnect because your not genuine to be honest. Granted, everyone does need to pay bills and eat so I understand to a degree.

I automatically was offended, but then I realized you’re absolutely correct. Most of these Contin creators no longer do photography. We’re never really dead. They are not working photographers. And the ones that shoot. The ladies are shooting them for free also so they’re not really working photographers either. I actually work as a photographer and I would say it sucks. But I’m not a scam!

I blame especially those who sell those courses. They push people who are lost to grab a camera and learn how to market. Question is what are you marketing ? Whats the actual skill? This has caused a serious issue where photographers cant be trusted anymore because the client in the past had horrible experience with someone who did an amazing job marketing themselves but couldn't deliver. My take

I don't think it has ruined photography, people who really love it will do it.
I guess people might have also run out of video ideas, what to teach, there is just so much you can teach. But not much new lenses released, not much new gear now.
But if people got gear that is not the norm, why not review it.

Gear reviews generate views which generate dollars. The market is over saturated & then you have the vlogers who make vids because they got a couple of correctly exposed photos & think they are creative enough to do so. Not just photography & not just video. I see some other subjects popular (were) &writing articles & you can tell they don't have the experience & most likely read a book on it & then wrote an article. And it is obvious the editor hasn't a clue or nothing better & has a deadline to meet. These mags are going out of bizz or are gone as the original talent that made them are retired or passed on. It is not just the digital thing. You Tube is a marketing tool & probably will be well into the future.
PS; I stopped watching at 2:20 while reading some of the comments while listening & based my comment on that. Happy shooting!

Thank you for the comment. I really appreciate you taking your time to write one. UA-cam is definitely a marketing tool and I also use it as that to be honest. The market is also saturated but I can’t really blame these guys because that’s what’s selling at the moment.

I kinda fell off from photography videos. Blogs imply that the audience cares that we dropped our subway sandwich, gear reviews take too long to get to the point (with no proof of concept), bts is usually an underproducted 15min of a model giggling, and educational videos have been saying the same thing for 20 years (since the core of photography hasnt really change much). But if all these categories merge into one 10min video, "Priceless"🙌🏾 The problem is it would be too hard to keep up with a posting schedule with so many dynamics in one video.

    • @PrinceMeyson

@PrinceMeyson also I think the community needs more head to head competition videos of photographers with different styles/gear shooting the same model. Or maybe natural light or theme based challenges that viewers and creators can join in on.

Content creators ruined IG. Photographers and videographers suffered. As long as you put out entertaining and trendy videos, you get views. Try to show off your work, you get nothing.
A LOT of content creators have little to no talent with photography or videography. They just have good gear.

You see that’s my problem. I’ve actually paid for courses from professionals and I learnt a thing or two which is great! But if you do not have anything to show and you are only selling get rich quick courses then it’s really sad. And like you said, a lot of them aren’t talented but hey…

Photography is a not a scam. But using social media to promote products which are bypassing the standards which people have learned through the years by replacing it with AI/computational autonomy and calling it the future. AI generative images are cool but it is killing the real photography. Me personally I just want to do it as a hobby and only the financial gain will be only to cover any necessary expenses.
Product reviews are sometimes necessary for people to evaluate new technology or software advantages however you shouldn't be looking to use a highly advanced camera if your core skills are using a Samsung or iPhone. At least try to learn the basics and practice what you can before making large leaps. So whilst the world has a small proportion of Hasselblad/Leica/Phase One users it is curiousity which drives people to watch these videos.
I think for the moment, Fujifilm and Sony cameras are more accessible than the above makes. Canon and Nikon too.

Sorry I have to disagree with this view. I remember when I started photography all I did was learn learn and learn, everyday. I would go outdoors shoot for hours together and since then to date I have been extremely passionate about it. Even today when I see someone's work inspiring me, I keep thinking and experimenting on how to achieve that. Simply put I love photography and have been doing it for almost 14 years now. But unfortunately though I am pretty decent at my craft, I am struggling to make money. I was in one or the other jobs as a photographer until few years ago, but since I started freelancing it's been a very challenging ride, to the extent that now I dont know if I will ever make it. So I really envy those who can make money out of it which is what is more important than the art itself. What is the point if you are really good at something and cant make money? I think thats why this trend started where people talk about how to make money which is totally justified. I would rather make good amount of money than wasting time perfecting the craft. If you can make money without being quote and quote great at your craft, then why not?

Shiiiiii….i feel you on that. Except for me, it was cinematography. That’s why I stopped making how to light and how to shoot indie films. I haven’t posted in over a year. I thought I was the only one that noticed it. Then the iPhone came and no one cares now how to light. Just buy a cell phone gimbal, and you’re a cinematographer . 🙄 Everyone is just looking for that get rich quick scheme. I agree with you 100%. Now, I just focus on making my indie films. 🤷🏾‍♂️ F wasting my time trying to teach people that don’t care about the craft.
