Hermann was often beaten by the mighty Norwegians. Aamodt, Kjus, Svindal.

Devilfish6666 Uhm, that's not true. Norwegian Kjetil Andre Aamodt's combined career total of twenty World Championship and Olympic medals is an all-time best. Aamodt is the only alpine skier to win 8 Olympic medals, and has won 5 World Championship gold medals as well as 21 individual World Cup events. Hermann Maier was always beaten by some Norwegian, if it wasn't Kjetil Andre Aamodt it was Lasse Kjus:)

Devilfish6666 That is so wrong. First of all, the definition of a champion is if he wins championships. Look at the statistics, both Aamodt and Kjus surpasses Maier. You are trying to explain why Maier didn't win as many championship medals by saying he was derived from attending as many races, but thats a poor excuse. Look at the legendary Lasse Kjus, the only alpine skier to ever have medaled in all 5 events in the same World Championship event. He suffered from extreme respiratory problems and from that reason he was forced to abort so many WC races, he never reached his full potential cause of that. Kjus was actually spending more time with the doctors back home in Norway than in the slopes at times and he had to take long breaks from racing. He knew his career was going to be shortened by this so what did he do? He won medals in ALL events in the SAME world championship event. Now, that's what I call a true champ!
So, lets just take a look at the pure facts. Maier was NOT the greatest alpine skier in any means, he was good at Super-G and Downhill but Aamodt swept the podium in championships in all disciplines. For almost six years, Aamodt led the all-time Marathon World Cup ranking, with a total of 13,252 points earned from 1989 to 2006 - third in this ranking of male competitors is Maier (11,787, 1996-2009). So Herman had his chances! He just blew them. Aamodt was the most complete skier ever and his championship records will probably never be beaten - except perhaps by another great Norwegian, Aksel Lund Svindal. He has the potential, so lets just see.
      - Case closed -

Devilfish6666 The proof is in the numbers. Most winning in World Championships and most winning in the Olympics. Aamodt became the first male alpine skier to win four gold medals in the Olympics. Hard to beat that. Aamodt mastered the whole mountain, he is the greatest skier. And for Kjus to win medals in all the disciplines in the same championship is unique. Maier was not a complete skier, you said it yourself, he didn't master all disciplines so he can't really be defined as a true alpine skier cause he was a Super-G and Downhill specialist. He had much MORE time to refine his skills in the few discipline he competed in compared to Aamodt that had to train more in order to compete in every discipline, if that doesn't tell you something then you must be less gifted mentally. Everyone in the alpine skiing environment agrees on that. Maier even said that himself. Look it up, it's all there in the history books for all to read. Aamodt has far more trophies and that is what every athlete is competing for in any sport.
Man up and admit what is true, your just being hopelessly subjective. You should try to see this objectively and honor the best, instead of just defending an athlete that never became the greatest. Maier had some great seasons and he was good at times and I salute him for that - but the proof is right there in the numbers, Aamodt wins. You can't really discuss evidence. And with that I rest my case.

Devilfish6666 If your able to read the winning statistics are all there in the public. It clearly states who the best total skier was. How could you even consider a skier thats doesn't even master all disciplines. Aamodt won in ALL disciplines! Maier wasn't even close. Aamodt had to compete in all the WC races as well, Herman wasn't good enough so he only trained for two races. That's not a complete alpine skier. Both Aamodt, Kjus and Svindal is better than Maier in those terms.
      Aamodt race history:
      Olympics:
      Gold 1992 Albertville Super-G
Gold 2002 Salt Lake City Super-G
Gold 2002 Salt Lake City Combined
      Gold 2006 Turin Super-G
      Silver 1994 Lillehammer Downhill
      Silver 1994 Lillehammer Combined
      Bronze 1992 Albertville Giant slalom
      Bronze 1994 Lillehammer Super-G
      World Championships:
      Gold 1993 Morioka Giant slalom
      Gold 1993 Morioka Slalom
      Gold 1997 Sestriere Combined
      Gold 1999 Vail Combined
      Gold 2001 St. Anton Combined
      Silver 1991 Saalbach Super-G
      Silver 1993 Morioka Combined
Silver 2001 St. Anton Giant slalom
      Silver 2003 St. Moritz Downhill
      Bronze 1996 Sierra Nevada Super-G
      Bronze 1999 Vail Downhill
      Bronze 2003 St. Moritz Combined
      WC:
      21 wins (1 downhill, 5 super-G, 6 giant slalom, 1 slalom, 8 combined)
      64 podiums, 231 top tens!
Give it up, you are beginning to look like a huge fool.

Man, I appreciate Aamodt and Kjus, but Hermann Maier has won the Overall World Cup four times which is one time more than Kjus and Aamodt combined. You can ask every skier what's more difficult to win: Olympic Gold or the Overall World Cup and they will tell you it's the latter. By the way: Hermann Maier started at age 23 in the WC, while Kjus (19) and Aamodt (18) did much earlier. In addition, as far as I'm informed, none of them had such an extreme injury like Maier in 2001.
Fact is: Aamodt is the most successful Olympic alpine skier. Kjus won the most medals at one single World Championship. But overall they were both NOT better than Stenmark (!), Maier, Girardelli, Zurbriggen or Tomba.
PS: If you combine all victories Kjus has 22, Aamodt 30 and Maier 59. If you like statistics you should check out the following link, I think it sums it up quite smartly: www.ski-db.com/db/stats/M_super.asp
