Almost every statistic or “fact” presented in this video is just correlation not causation, for example, people that have higher levels of stress and anxiety are naturally the people that stay inside more because they’re mostly the introverts, they’re not stressed because they’re binge watching, they’re binge watching because they’re stressed
As a person with binge watching/eating/reading problems, I promise you stress and bingeing build on each other. I feel overwhelmed or distressed, so I spend hours and hours doing nothing but reading and eating. This can go on for days. At the end of it I feel tired, stiff, ill, ashamed, demotivated and hideously depressed. Meanwhile my life has fallen apart around me while I was distracted, so stress keeps ratcheting up - and the vicious cycle continues.
In the current corona virus panic, they're already starting to see mental health issues from people listening to news all day long talk about nothing but doom and gloom from the virus. Of course it matters what you ingest on a much-too-regular basis. Imagine if you're a little off to begin with....this current over-panic is enough to make anyone ill.
He does mention that the statistics are correlated though so he's not trying to claim otherwise. He probably just thinks that them being correlated is good enough evidence to avoid binge watching.

Statistics major perspective: The studies mentioned in the first half showing a strong positive correlation between heart disease/death and binge watching should be discounted for 2 reasons. Reason 1: There are clear confounding variables. This is an observational study; those that engage in binge-watching are also less likely to engage in physical activity, which has a more direct relationship to heart disease. Reason 2: Correlation is not causation! We should never take the results of the study to mean that an additional hour of binge-watching CAUSES a decrease in 22 minutes of life expectancy.
Most of what we eat, what we drink, working too hard, not having work and many other things we do decrease our lifespan. That's why we all die. And I'm no statisticus (statistician statist..?) But I can tell you, those who are binge watching at home have a 99.99 pct chance to not die in a car accident for the time they are watching. The 0.01 pct is for the case when a runaway truck hits your house. They also have a much lesser chance to drawn, or to die in a working accident.
I don’t really binge watch as much as I occasionally check Disney+ and Netflix, and binge watch a series if I find something good, I watch a few episodes, and when I’m done I get off to go do something else I need to do, my only real thoughts during it are about what I’m watching or “just one more, then im done with this” And I’m almost always eating popcorn
Correlation does not = causation. But obviously sitting in front of the tv every single day isn’t going to lengthen your life, however I don’t think you can say, for example “women who sit in front of the tv have a 23% higher chance of being obese”. That only shows that lots of obese people watch tv, but also people who aren’t obese. These people are most likely obese due to other factors like maybe they don’t have easy access to areas to excercise, maybe an eating disorder so since they are unable to fill their day with healthier activities they have to fill their time with tv. Obese people are more likely to have to watch tv, not necessarily obese because of tv. I enjoy your videos though
If you sit, doing nothing I would agree. If you exercise (weights, cycling, treadmill etc.) while your watch the same amount if TV, I would think it would be less likely to cut your life expectancy.
Those weren't his words, those were the actual professionals and scientists and what not. They're not scientists in charge of conducting these studies because we, the average Joe's, are smarter than them and can destroy their findings in one quick youtube comment.
@@jeremy5602 yes and these scientists know that correlation does not equal causation that's why they have a discussion section in their study to point out possible flaws and limitations in the conducted study. Usually they never even imply causation in studies like these but only correlation . But that doesn't matter because studies are often misportrayed to be causal by many media.

@@samusaran7317 While TV didn't create billions of geniuses, it still helped spreading actually useful information, for example I once heard from an italian that in the 60s, the goverment sponsored various "TV-Lessons" where illiterate people could learn to write and learn. I disagree with Inklers on the fact that binge watching will kill millions, but I agree that atleast tv (sometimes) offered stuff better than the random reality shows you can find nowadays on streaming services.
Exactly.. whenever i feel down i watch something or go play videogames or read a book.. not because i’m addicted but because i know it’s a way for me to keep my mind off of what is bothering me
I imagine it goes both ways to some degree. If you stay cooped up too long binge watching you aren't gonna get out and meet people and get over your depression as easily.
The fatigue of having far too much choice on Netflix is what destroys my life - not binging. I spend more time stressing about what to watch next than I do actually watching things.
Yup....trying to find something to watch on Netflix is the ultimate FOMO... " That looks interesting, but, so does that....what if this sucks and I just wasted two hours while I could have been watching something better" The struggle is REAL!!!
Exactly! I’ll spend an hour watching trailers and adding to my watch list yet turn off my tv because I’m done 😂 but didn’t get to actually watch anything
The irony is that youtube's algorithm has probably flagged your videos as "binge-able" and is why I was able to find it randomly on my feed. Not that I'm upset by this at all. This is great stuff!
I am more a moderate binge-watcher, I can and have gone months without doing such for example. But I do find it messes with my sleep because I actually feel LESS sleepy if I binge into the night. I think it has to do with the dopamine yes but also tied to riveting attention onto the bright screen (relative to surroundings or after night time.) So I think it messes with your circadian rhythm & melatonin production. I haven't found it effects my eating because I don't like to eat and watch, I like to JUST watch.
I see it as information overload. Since I was a kid I've always been hungry for knowledge and information. So even while I'm doing other things I'll binge listen to any number of random sometimes pointless topics.
It's impossible for me to binge watch series straight. I would fall asleep second episode or got bored too easily. Miraculously I can listen to podcast for hours lol.
11:12 Study: "42% of people surveyed admitted to pretending they had seen a program when they really hadn't" Thoughty2: "We're all guilty of it" I'm going to go on a limb and say around 42% of people are guilty of it
A possible tip to stop a binge session, is to stop watching an episode somewhere in the mid third of an episode. The idea is that you stop after a scene has concluded that doesn't immediately make you want to see the next scene. Episodes often end up on "semi cliffhangers", especially the latter ones in a season. So be mindful how many episodes are left in a season as well, so you don't end up on the 2-3 last episodes in season, depending on how many episodes each season has (if it's over 22 episodes a season, it might be the last 3-4 episodes , whereas 8-10 is the last 1-2 episodes for example). Yeah, and also; avoid reading the titles on episodes you haven't seen! Both for not spoiling your viewing, and/or increasing anticipation and/or other feelings that can compel you to do more binge watching. I don't know if this works or not, because I don't have a huge problem with binge watching (well, at least not anymore?). But I definitively feel it is easier to stop with the tips I've explained, and I do recognize partly the phenomena of "just one more". My wife has a binge watching problem, and stopping mid episode after a scene has concluded, makes for less "fuss" from her than trying to do it after an episode is over! Also, spacing out episodes over a longer time, especially with more quality shows with for example a high production quality, makes for a more positive viewing experience overall. Who wants to wait the better part of a year for the next season for example? Perhaps that is okay for people who watch a lot of shows, but I don't watch that many right now. Taking the chance that an episode doesn't compel you to watch another episode, is too big of a gamble, especially when you are tired and its either close or past your normal bed time!

Maybe they had healthier livestyles when they were younger. They might also not engage in all the other bad habits connected with a sedetary lifestyle, like overeating.
They watched Television later in life. Not their teens and twenties. Also, they watched whatever the TV show. TV doesn't show back-to-back episodes of everything. You can only watch what is currently on.
Something I've observed with my own behavior is that watching TV can be a form of escapism. when having a bad day or feeling stressed, anxious, or depressed, or sometimes all 3, I'll turn to the television to escape my problems, and focus on whatever's on the screen, and dump a lot of dopamine into it. I think lots of people to do this and I feel like this can be an unhealthy way of dealing with your problems.
Videos like these make me appreciate my mental state. I have never justified to myself about binge watching a show, I can happily stop watching if I need to do something or go bed, hell I even stop on cliffhangers sometimes just so I can spend a bit of time not knowing the outcome and lastly, I have never ever pretended to have seen a show or movie. Like if you're the same.
I like to bing watch netflix after I get done with dinner after I get home from work. I usually have about 2 hours. Since what I normally watch last between 22 and 30 minutes long, I give my dinner 1 episode to settle. After that, at each half way point in the episode and at the end of each episode, I do some exercises. My, "snack?" A small protein shake. The exercise gives me another dose of dopamine, which does help relax the body. After the last episode, I do some more exercise and give myself about 30 minutes with no screen to help wind down. Doing those things to try to counteract the bad of binging, has helped me wake up feeling more alert and focused. It has even helped with my mental health.
And this... is go to go even FURTHER BEYOND, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
In our house, we limit ourselves to two, maximum of three, episodes of a series a day. If we've got other things we want to do, we'll stop at one. Snacks are limited to one small packet of crisps for the entire evening - quite a change from the days when we were catching up on 4-and-a-half seasons of _Babylon 5_ and were spending entire days doing nothing but watching back-to-back episodes... Of course, it still means that we breeze through a series fairly quickly and we're stuck waiting the better part of a year for the next season to come out.

I feel like that an increase in suicide SEARCHES being correlated with an interest in COMMITTING suicide is a disingenuous presentation of information. Media with a focus on suicide could make people more curious about it, what drives people to it, the warning signs, etc. Those searches may have had as much to do with realizing "oh crap, I have a real problem" and "I don't want to miss the signs in people around me" as it would with looking into committing it yourself. The actual increase in suicides is more concerning but I think it's less a problem with the show existing and more a problem with what's going on and left unexplained about mental health, having to confront problems, and that there are always options before "kill yourself." Especially in young people because without a wider frame of reference "get rid of the problem" is the most basic instinct a person feels when something is overwhelming and when you are the problem itself, it's a conclusion anyone can come to without anyone telling them it's an option. Marking these things as taboo and inappropriate to teach about even in a controlled setting is what does more harm than these pieces of media that are scapegoated as the sole cause.
Lend down the Social Media more to live more and Do a job. Don't leave Social Media completely, Limit it to a safe time and you'll Master life. Love you Amigo.
My cousin committed suicide at 13 in 2002 I wonder if we had more access to the internet and social media if he'd still be alive. He had a rough life at home and school 1 teacher in particular told him he'd amount to nothing in life and none of the faculty believed him but I did. There was nothing we could do and nowhere to have our voices heard.
Yeah. I got the feeling that this entire video wasnt that well researched. All those supposed health problems from binge watching can and most likely habe other causes f.e. sleep deprivation. I am pretty sure the studies he mentioned ignored a lot of factors to determine why people who binge-watch tend to be less healthy like how many hours they work, how much free time the person actually has, how happy that person is with his life, what, if any, health problems they have etc. For example: A person with a 40+ hour work week and very limited free time will get more health problems from binge watching than a person with no job and almost unlimited free time. The reason? The working person binge-watches a show INSTEAD of sleeping while the person without a job gets enough sleep and is less stressed in general than a working person. Work is the thing that messes with our brains and makes us feel mentally ill, not technology

Thank you!!! That was my thought all the way through and I'm sooo glad someone else found that too.

@@sungibatman1996 your spitting straight facts right there
Truth; good or bad it's naturally and publicly "destroying" our lives all the time..conclusion I do what I want period.
I don’t really binge watch as much as I occasionally check Disney+ and Netflix, and binge watch a series if I find something good, I watch a few episodes, and when I’m done I get off to go do something else I need to do, my only real thoughts during it are about what I’m watching or “just one more, then im done with this”
And I’m almost always eating popcorn
The moral of the video is don't sit on your ass all day lmao
You're projectingggg 😋
If you sit, doing nothing I would agree. If you exercise (weights, cycling, treadmill etc.) while your watch the same amount if TV, I would think it would be less likely to cut your life expectancy.

@@jeremy5602 yes and these scientists know that correlation does not equal causation that's why they have a discussion section in their study to point out possible flaws and limitations in the conducted study. I am more a moderate binge-watcher, I can and have gone months without doing such for example.
But I do find it messes with my sleep because I actually feel LESS sleepy if I binge into the night. I think it has to do with the dopamine yes but also tied to riveting attention onto the bright screen (relative to surroundings or after night time.)
So I think it messes with your circadian rhythm & melatonin production.
I haven't found it effects my eating because I don't like to eat and watch, I like to JUST watch.
Try to lower your screen luminosity and you will feel much sleepier!

scary to think how magnified this problem is since we're all stuck at home
I just spend 5 hours watching the final season of my favorite show and I feel called out.
You were.. everyone is waiting for you.
9 min in and I'm like: And THIS folks is why it's a good idea to do a dopemine detox

Yeah I binge watch but I can stop watching the show whenever I want or need to.
