    I'm going to be extremely pedantic: technically the 2nd law is `F ∝Δp / Δt`, or `F = k * Δp / Δt`. In words, 'the force is proportional to the change in momentum over the change in time'. k is defined as 1 (i.e. a change in momentum of 1 kg ms^-1 over 1 second requires 1 newton of force), so `F = Δp / Δt`. From this, `F = ma` can be derived: p = mv, so Δp = `mv₂ - mv₁ = m(v₂ - v₁)`. This means `F = m(v₂ - v₁) / Δt = ma`.
    (My excuse for being pedantic is practise for my physics A-level paper 1 in 3 days :P.)
