Affordable HF Ham Radio - uSDX SSB/CW With Android Phone Control Head (Easy Cool and Cheap Mods)

- In recent years a bunch of affordable small sound card/software driven HF ham radios have become available. The uSDX is one of them and it stems from an open source radio project from a couple of very smart and kind radio operators.
The uSDX rigs (there are several variants) get real close to being pretty good but then need a little help to make them even more fun to use. In this video I take a uSDX Plus that was around $125 and use an app on the Google Play Store (along with a few little components) to make a control head for many of the functions of the radio. The app is a work in progress and hopefully in the future more features will become available.
It's a fun project to tinker with and at a fraction of the cost of many of the mainstream HF radios on the market.
Thanks for taking a look!
I have that app and I use it to listen to the hf bands since I don’t have a radio with ssb recording capabilities. I love it too because I can be on the bus going to my competitors for special Olympics and still be able to tune the bands. Albeit via a websdr server that is.
That’s very cool, thanks for sharing!
Thanks. Yep. Fun stuff!
Very nice! Exactly the thing I'm hoping for to emerge in the Ham world: an inexpensive all mode HF phone dongle! Not everyone likes or needs that kind of stuff, but for occasional field setup it would be great. And I think it can be made very small and cheap, as no screen or knobs would be needed.
It's a fun app and set up to play with. Thanks for your comments.
tnx dude! It's very good idea for my USDX!!! ) See u on band! Best regards from RA9YOU! )
It is really beautiful buddy, this is exactly what i am looking for. Please what is the name of this app on google play, and is the dongle should I buy for this? cheers from Brazil
Great review of your set up. I was curious though if you can get the waterfall and specrum display working with the Kenwood cat control?
Thanks
Thanks. It was a fun project. I haven’t tried to get a waterfall display set up but it has crossed my mind. Perhaps when the fall and winter seasons return I’ll get back to working on it.
I just found this chap who used an imaginative way to add a waterfall and spectrum display to these transceivers... You may enjoy his approach...

Great video! I just picked up one of these USDX+ radios and thanks to your video I got all the pieces to have CAT control, etc. I was wondering what antenna are you using? Thanks!
I've had this app for a while. Just for listening. Mine has a waterfall display
Hi dreez. Can you show us on Amazon what part to buy to make the CAT cable? When you get a chance. I looked them up but found too many and was not sure which to buy.
hi there could you tell me what you used to get cat controll to work on the usdx radio and what software did you use on android
Would love to see the detail on the phone stand and a link to that headphone amp. Thanks! I have the "HT" oriented version of that radio with the BNC on top.
The stand is pretty simple and was just cobbled together using some scrap plywood for the backing and two scraps of 3/4" 3.5" wide pine boards cut at 45 degree angles. Behind the phone is some black foam from some scrap lock together flooring mats. The handles on the the front are drawer pulls left over from another project and available at any hardware store. The back pine angled cuts are spaced just enough to hold the little amplifier. Then I hit it with a couple layers of flat black spray paint. It actually came together pretty well. www.amazon.com/Headphone-Amplifier-Two-Stage-Portable-MobilePhone/dp/B0B65G7TZM/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?keywords=headphone+amplifier+3.5mm&qid=1679354964&sprefix=headphone+ampl%2Caps%2C107&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExWjg4R1FDVzVXTlhFJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMTk4ODE4MTEyNkpHV1I3VkNDQyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNjg5MzEyMUhTV1M3VjNVQTc2NSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
Where did you buy the CAT cable or did you make?
I thougt the uSDX had a ptt_out on the CAT cable.
Cant you just connect that to the PA?
Hi, im waiting for my usdx v2 right now, i just wonder what type of cable do i need to use the app on the rigg? 73 from Norway.
Your creativity and ingenuity are appreciated Sir! Very inspiring! 72 - KF6IF
Thanks. Fun stuff.
Interesting! Can this kind of setup work with a Xiego G90? The screen on the G90 is on the small side. Thanks!
It's supposed to work with the G90. I did see a set up configuration for the G90.
What brand and model is that amp you're using sir? Appreciate it.
I wonder if its possible to remotely log into the phone and control the rig that way
make sure yr phone has OTG otherwise is not working..nice vid
I wonder if anyone could answer one very simple question! I recently purchased RTL-SDR Version 3 for monitoring world band radio stations and HAM HF bands. I have listened to many tutorials on the subject, but so far, no one has been clear and specific about a direct and easy-to-understand question: What is the name, brand, or model number of the best software for PC and/or Mac computers. Any specific answer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Sdr # , sdr++, sdr console have a look at then all
can you list your cables and sources to purchase
Dear sir I uave usdx 5watt version which I purchase to ebay 135 usd
Ple provide list of equipment so I can connect to my mobile
Salve volevo cortesemente sapere se questo abbinamento telefono sdr è possibile anche con sdr Red corner
Grazie
where is this software ?
waterfall working?
Can you show how to replicate it?
The last image in the video shows the connections for the CAT pin. The video on the app walks through all of the set up. It's a fun thing to play with!
Rx and tx must be soldered inverted like in your image? Tx pin to rxd and rx to txd on the ttl adapter?
Why use a pirated uSDX when you could use a licensed (tr)USDX at the same price?
