That air traffic software incident is actually shocking. Backup systems do indeed have their own backups, and corrupted data is something that shouldn't exist on that level of service. Even small and medium companies follow the basic rules of system backups, and those include a bare minimum of security for data preservation and data integrity that should be imperative on something as complex as software used by airlines. This is an infrastructure problem, likely already present for many years, but it should alert people to the fact that this needs some proper funding to fix.
I wonder what will happen if the root cause is "underfunded and understaffed."

There really should be a sign-in, sign-out system for classified documents. It reminds me of an episode of "The West Wing" where Charlie notices that copies of the president's private schedule keep getting leaked so he has to "crack down" by making people sign for every copy they receive. It's such a simple solution that I'm not at all surprised we don't do it.
