    Almost done making the body of this bag. Made a couple modifications to use a pair of them as saddlebags on my motorcycle. Then tooling the top flap, stain to match, and get 'em on the bike!

    Fantastic tutorial!! For the pockets, what is the reasoning behind cutting a hole in the body of the bag and the side panel and then adding a backing piece on the inside?

    Wow, fantastic! But you make it look so easy! There is a lot of work and even more patience involved in such a pretty bag. Also the reason why such pieces of art cost much more. However, I think this one will last for 20 years, and can then be polished up for some more decades. And then its not really a bad choice... But, I am really interested in making my own - Just to have the hours of creation as an exit from all the daily stress. cheers

    Awesome method on attaching the side pockets. Just a caution to anyone out there sewing this type of thing - Tony pre-shapes the pocket seam a bit to make it easier to attach and stitch - he is doing it dry. If you wet the leather to help shape it, PLEASE let it dry completely before stitching it - sewing on damp leather is a disaster.

    2 questions, why are the inside walls of the pockets separate from the main body, making it a 3 layer attachment. And why are the sides of the body attached in a weaker manner than the pockets to the sides. i ask these things because i believe a key component to anything is durability, so would like to understand the reasoning.

    • @talexander7217
      @talexander7217 5 років тому +11

      @@komakon it depends on the quality of leather you can afford. I purchased a chrome tan water buffalo side from Tandy. It is a mid grade leather. Being a Gold member I paid $80 just for the leather. It was too thick for the inside panels of the pockets so I used a thinner oil tan for those pieces. Then there's the buckles at $3 a piece. And rivets. Probably just over $100 for materials. You could definitely do it for cheaper or a lot more expensive depending on how good you want it to look or how long you want it to last. I'm almost done with it and can tell this bag will outlast me even with rugged use. It's a great pattern.

    The flap that ties the handles together needs to be fastened to the back handle so it isn't lost and the laptop pocket on the back needs a flap not a zipper. A flap will help keep water out and the zipper can scratch the laptop.

    • @aliciaaustin8373

    Really nice project ... probably my next one :-)
    Just out of curiosity - in the gussets (side pieces) ... why do you cut out the "windows" (actually back of side pockets) just to replace them with extra (almost identical) pieces of leather (which have to be sewn into the litteraly the same place). If strenghtening of sides is the point, then two layers of leather would make a better job ... just my humble opinion (maybe I missed something)

    Cool, and definitely tempting to start making such a bag! But you take quite some leaps in that video: 1. does the pattern also contain the list of materials (both tools and metalwork for the bag)?2. you start with pale brown leather, and all of a sudden, as from the moment you're patching things together, the leather is coloured, with an extra tan on the edges. Please add this "how to" also in the video. Or a link to the "how to"?

    • @AlwaysBolttheBird
