It's a shame he faced Magnus at his best cuz to me he deserves to play in the candidates, but maybe if Anish qualifies via the Gran Swiss (or even he does obviousy)
He was probably the best player for this last period and he still might raise his elo even higher and maybe claim the elo spot if Naka drops a bit or qualifies with the Gran Swiss

Great interviewer allowing him to speak and at the same time specific and interesting questions. The one thing I'd be really curious to know (and I'm not sure if Magnus has said this in other interviews either) is when Magnus says that he's not a fan of the World Championship (or the candidates) in it's "current format" -- what does he mean by that? you sense the Magnus era is coming to an end - it started with his choice not to overtake Kasparov for years as World Champion - his motivation is waning and this World Cup win is likely to accelerate that sense of accomplishment being fulfilled - it is likely he will soon sit at the table one of these days and simply lose his will to win - the burden of having to uphold the standard of being "Magnus Carlsen" every time he plays is HEAVY - he is expected to win every tournament he enters - news that he won is met mostly with indifference - certainly not surprise - it is only when he loses that the media becomes attentive - 2nd place is seen as a failure - think about that - you can ONLY be considered to have had a good tournament if you win each and every time - but who does that? - most players can at least be satisfied with playing well and coming in 2nd or 3rd - you can almost sense his passion for chess is dissipating within him - I would not be too surprised at all if he simply stops playing in the middle of a game - sits up - smiles - stands - shakes hands with his opponent and walks out of the room having played his last move ... it happens like that

I think he has the intention to retire as a world champion since he didn't confirm that he will not play for the title again. He'll get a break for a couple of years in streaming and not classical chess, then he will make a last dance by qualifying to the candidates, winning it, and take the title back in style. Or that's what i hope..

Every time I see him play a match against another GM I always get the same conclusion: the level of accuracy in Magnus is just too good, compared to what the rest have. His moves are also very fast for how accurate they are. Even Caruana, Hikaru or Pragg, they all tend to blunder in a match at some point...to see that with Magnus is just almost impossible. Not to mention that this guy was sick with food poisoning... What else can I say? As much as I wanted Pragg to win, this guy is the GOAT.
