This is simply one of the best songs ever written. The recorded version on "Taproot" has David Crosby & Graham Nash singing vocals as well. Everytime . . . everytime I hear that song, it makes the hair on my arms stand up. Not many songs do that. I wish I had one tenth the talent he had.
You beloveds are always with us. Always and forever. Thank you dearest Michael and dear e.e. Cummings for this forever blessing for our dear little hearts which keep going despite odds. I love you so always 💙💚🐦🙏 Lisa/Mummy xoxo
No autotune. No playing to a clicktrack. No compressor destroying dynamics. Beautiful tempo and dynamic changes. This is musical perfection. You are so sorely missed, Mr Hedges.
One of my favorite ever songs; I recorded this song for a friend whose son committed suicide years ago; it was the most deep and touching and passionate tributes I could think of to send her a comforting love
It's a shame such a fantastic musician had to pass. He is, and will be for ever, an inspiration and an influence. The poem is beautiful. We carry your heart Michael.
Yes we do, thank you friend, peace. Forever grateful for him and for those who keep these videos free for public. Free for free ,he would approve. Thank you
I lived in Palo Alto in the mid '80's. Hedges and other WH players were all over the town, playing in various bars and venues. He used to regularly be the "dinner enterntainment" at the outdoor dining area at the New Varsity (sadly, long gone). A really great artist, best appreciated live, a great performer. He also used to be seen at Gryphon Stringed Instruments, playing their fine guitars while we'd watch.
I was just looking at the ratings box above. What idiots gave this a thumbs down??? You just cannot thumbs down anything that this man has ever done. He's a frickin' higher level genius that had something very very very special inside him.
I agree, he was an extraordinary bright and beautiful soul.... with a mind before his time. I often listen to him in Palo Alto on a cinema/cafe' there, many years ago. I will never forget his utstrålning (swedish). Yes, Michael. We carry You in our hearts. 💕 KRISTINA MC CULLOCH HJO, SWEDEN
i grew up in OK, near MH's home town. he was older than me, but i worked with one of his former teacher/band directors and he told me that MH was a quirky genius, even as a young guy. i have listened to Taproot start to finish at least 1000 times. this is one of the most beautiful poems and songs ever written. i saw him play live twice, and no video or audio recording could ever capture the atmosphere and mystical air that he pulled into a venue. he's one of my musical heroes, and would be even if i didn't play guitar.
I had the privilege of seeing him in a small venue concert twice before he died, and there is no way of describing the way his music could well up emotions inside you that you never knew you had. He was the epitome of man = music and a big reason why I love music to this day.
I saw Michael Hedges live several times. I was always amazed by his performance. I never saw such a diversified audience for music and never saw so many exstatic faces following a concert.
I saw him seven times. First time he was opening for Jorma Kaukonen in Baltimore in a movie theater early 1982...I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. The last time at the Bottom Line 1992. Have seen him play in a loft. Always brilliant, always magical. We're coming up on him being gone 20 years.
it is a HONOR for cunnings that so many people try to make music out of his poems, it always was. in our times whenever you take something beautiful and make it your owns it's called stealing but it is just appreciating beautiful things and taking them to even more people. so it's even GOOD for cunnings that so many people use it
@saimusicmandy Michael was hugely popular with guitarists and people who liked instrumental "new" age music. I hesitate to use that term because it implies some things that don't apply to Michael. You haven't heard of him because, well, you are in University. Michael sadly passed away a number of years ago in a car accident. This is my favorite, it was my choice in my wedding.
I CARRY YOUR HEART 💕 lyrics i carry your heart with me i carry it in my heart i’m never without it wherever you go - i go - my Dear and whatever is done by only me is your doing my Darling i fear no fate for you are my Fate, my Sweet i want no world for Beautiful - you are my World - my True and it's you are whatever the moon has always mean and whatever the sun will always sing - is you and here is the deepest secret nobody knows here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and a sky of a sky of a tree called life which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart i carry your heart i carry it in my heart i carry your heart i carry it in my heart i carry your heart 🖌poem by e.e.cummings music~michael hedge
This version is great but I prefer the CD one. I remember reading somewhere that Michael absolutely didn't like David Crosby and Graham Nash's back vocals... Incredible!? I think they're just perfect for the song.
Actually Hedges's music resists being fit into categories other than "acoustic guitar," and Hedges continually joked about this, calling his genre of music "heavy mental" and "upper primate spike collar guitar," for example. John Fahey and, more recently, John Hasbrouck are prime examples of American Primitive, and these are quite different from Hedges, right?
Michael I believe helped to define the progressive nature of Windham Hill, classifying his music as a whole has proven very difficult ( compare this to anything on the "Double Planet").
Can anyone help me? The guitar riff at around 3 minutes sounds very similar to another song, but I cannot figure out what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Some people make the world seem empty when you realise they've gone.
It's just so beautiful. A connection of man and music in such a way that can't be replicated.
the mad guitarist had a beautiful voice. he is still deeply missed.
Great performance.Thank you Michael for sharing your music with the world.Rest in Peace.
please show respect. this is the guitar at it's zenith, played by a human who is beyond human.
RIP Mr Hedges.
Gets me every time. Such a deep and beautiful song. Michael is still dearly missed.
Like a comet so blazing, but too soon gone...yet we carry him in OUR hearts.
Look deeply within yourself the talent is therein anyone willing to climb the mountain.

I was there at this show. This song wrenches my soul!!!
Me too! I saw him every time he played at The Bottom Line. Amazing musician. RIP Michael.

Michael Hedges is using his custom Takamine Guitar, with his name on the headstock. It was gifted to him while on tour in Japan, 1989.
This song has carried my heart through a lot of bad times though out my life... And, today is a very, very bad day.
Great song! this was my wedding song for what it's worth!
I played it for my daughter at her wedding too bro
A brilliant talent ...Lost to us too soon.......I used this for my wedding song.....you were fucking amazing!.. love you still...
My favorite song ever...

Given his formidable guitar skills, it was easy to overlook the fact that the guy was a pretty damn good singer.
Indeed
Thank you so much for sharing this. He was a beautiful soul who is missed here.
"Taproot" is such an amazing album. This was the closing song, and was perfect.
I had the privilege of seeing him in a small venue concert twice before he died, and there is no way of describing the way his music could well up emotions inside you that you never knew you had. He was the epitome of man = music and a big reason why I love music to this day.
I was lucky enough 2 c him live. Luv this song, especially on the CD with the harmonies !!
I saw Michael Hedges live several times. I was always amazed by his performance. I never saw such a diversified audience for music and never saw so many exstatic faces following a concert.
This is the rawest I have heard him play this song. Very cool recording and performance. Miss Michael.

From my favorite of his records.
I love the music Michael set to the poem as much as his intepretation ! and I obviously adore Cummings' verses !
Thanks for sharing this video !!!!!!!
Michael Hedges singing this song.......takes my breath away.....:-)
Rawkin' in a different way... brilliant and wonderful
I saw him live about 15 years ago.....and this is STILL so GODAMN BADASSS!!!!!
The album version with Graham Nash (and even David Crosby, I think) doing harmonies borders on the sublime. Absolutely gorgeous.
Yes, David Crosby, as well! Michael opened for CSN acoustic tour in 1992, and UN benefit in 1989.
Great song, I like it. Thanks Michael
done so honestly raw and emotional. rip miss his pressece on Earth.
beautiful xx
This is a wonderful story! Makes me wish I was there too! Thanks for sharing it with us!
e.e.cummings...my favorite poem
So so amazing❤❤❤💋

Priceless!
I CARRY YOUR HEART 💕 lyrics
i carry your heart with me
i carry it in my heart
i’m never without it
wherever you go - i go - my Dear
and whatever is done by only me
is your doing my Darling
i fear no fate
for you are my Fate, my Sweet
i want no world
for Beautiful - you are my World - my True
and it's you are whatever the moon has always mean
and whatever the sun will always sing - is you
and here is the deepest secret nobody knows
here is the root of the root
and the bud of the bud
and a sky of a sky
of a tree called life
which grows higher than soul can hope
or mind can hide
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart
i carry it in my heart
i carry your heart
i carry it in my heart
i carry your heart

@saimusicmandy

So would you say that this aggressive perspective is what you mean by American Primitive? What do you mean by aggressive?
and who ever gave u a thumb down honestly know nothing about poems...:S
Can anyone help me? The guitar riff at around 3 minutes sounds very similar to another song, but I cannot figure out what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cole Nelson while My guitar gently weeps?
beautiful song but i prefer the studio version
One of my favorite tunes he does. Robert Frost poem, right?
E.E. Cummings.
An ex girlfriend is a fan of Michael. I get it. And so did she. Beverly treated me badly, but at least she had good taste in music.
Helpless?
I completelyyyy agree with uu!!! omggg!!! :S

No one cares what you think.
