I really enjoyed this no BS well made video Shane. Great commentary and clear instructions with no dead time. I like your feel on the slide too. Well done man.SUBED & LIKED
Hey, Shane: you've given hope to hopeless shits like me who gave up on 6-strings. While I'm not enamored of the tone of a 3 string cigar box...knowing you can create one with a regular guitar has given me hope that my 2020 New Year's resolution to start learning guitar somehow...is DEFINITELY reachable. God bless you.
Thanks Shane! I have been inspired to cut strings 1,2 and 6 off of my Firefly electric. It is modeled after the Gibson ES 335. Set the action high for use with my new stubby slide! Totally Awesome!
My 4 String Cigar Box Guitar is essentially a 4 String Version of the "Trance Wonder" which I call the "Trance Wonder 4" & it's tuned to Open D Baritone tuning (D2, A2, D3, F#3) because I ran out of Ultra-Light Strings & all I had left was Baritone Guitar Strings. That lower tuning allowed me to sing in a lower key.
I started on the three string! Went on to a four string! Now I’m on a regular six string, but I tune open G with the Low E also tuned To G. It’s an excellent way to start playing guitar! Excellent video Shane! Play blues guitar today, don’t wait!
Actually you can have the Low E tuned to D for something a bit more fullers. Hi Ben Logan, yeah you finally updated to 6 Strings in a Breeze. I have my 6 String CBG in Open Gb which is Open G down a half step because I'm having trouble singing some of the higher notes.
This is awesome. I think it was about 3 yrs ago I found seasick Steve and cigar box guitars on UA-cam the same weekend.changed my outlook on guitar and music in general and that lead me to finding you. I will be doing this soon. Thank you so much.
Yeah Open G but you take the 3 D Strings right off the instrument in order achieve that sound. You could re-string a Martin LXM Tres (or Cuban) with the 2nd, 3rd, & 5th Pairs of Strings from a 12 String set to make a 6 String Version with 3 pairs of Strings called the "Trance Wonder 6, or Double Course Wonder".
Hello Shane, Love the Seasick Steve lessons. Also, I am really digging my new stubby slides. The "Mutha" and the "Runt" are both great, having a blast using them, they are well worth the money. I appreciate the extras too, cool stuff man!
When I updated from this to a 6 String Guitar in Eb standard I played Silent Night arranged by Darmon Meader on it. It's voiced a little low the 1st note in the Altos (or in this case Guitar 2) is supposed to be a C not an Ab.
What else can you play on that setup. If you are a total newbie like me, would it be better to have the guitar GDG? with the strings setup the way you have it can you still make chords all the way down the neck by baring all the strings? Can you show a video on learning notes/chords for that setup for a total newbie? Id love to play seasick steves stuff but would also like to play other regular songs too.
The interesting thing about you comparado to other teacher. You are honest your heart is on your sleve I love your style very much I wish we were friends. Ps I need the tabs for the star spangel banderas you gave some away but then you said figure out the rest with our ears lol I am 70 I need the tabs I am a vet I want to play it bad
Awesome Shane, been wanting to do a Trance Wonder for ages, now I know what I need to do. Gotta get me a hollow body for it. For your next Seasick Steve lesson, can you do "Burning Up", been wanting to learn that one for ages, but can't find tabs for it.
I was thinking that would be something funny to see you do live onstage... start talking about seasick steve, and announce you're going to do a couple, pick up the guitar and say something like "but first I have to make one." :)
I used to do it all the time. I'd be playing a 5-string cigar box guitar for a bit. Then I'd announce that it had way too many strings and would rip off the high string...and then play my 4 string songs on it.
@@ShaneSpeal BTW I made a 4 String version of this Guitar once, then a 5 and finally a 6 String Version. The 6 String Version reminds me of Silent Night arranged by Darmon Meader and it's voiced a little low. The downbeat it the alto part should be a C not an Ab.
Hey,i have an old classical guitar where one string is missing (third from above).Could i remove the strings you did and tune it to g and the strings to gdg?Sorry for my noob question,i have no idea about guitars.I just wanna play it like a 3 string cigar box guitar.I saw another video where gdg tuning is used on a cigar box and i liked it so i wanna use my old guitar like that cigar box guitar.Thx
Hey Shane ! Just stumbled upon your channel, awesome content thank you so much (subscribed on the spot!). I'm right in the middle of building myself a 4 string cigar box guitar : do you think it would work if I bought and tuned 3 out of 4 strings like you did in the vid ? I'm not a musician so I wouldn't know the first thing about that stuff when it'll come to it. Is it important for the Seasick playstyle to have the strings arranged that way, or can I attach them the 4-string standard way and tune only 3 to play ? :) sorry if this is a stupid question haha, this is completely alien business to me. Anyway keep up the good stuff !
It's not important to have strings spaced like Steve's. I just created the same exact spacing in order to explain his technique. TRY ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. You'll eventually find something that sounds good and is easy for you to play
Good to know ! Gonna piece up my CBG today, then buy A, G, D and B strings to cover most of your lessons. I also got my eye on those stubby slides, I find regular ones to be cumbersome. Thanks for the insight and response, your youtube energy is what got me into making my own CBG !
I really enjoyed this no BS well made video Shane. Great commentary and clear instructions with no dead time. I like your feel on the slide too. Well done man.SUBED & LIKED

I don't do that anymore.
Learning 6 String Guitar is now easy with electric
the tone is up to the pickups and scale / string gauges. doesn't matter if it's a cigar box or a Stratocaster body or whatever

Know nothing about guitars but that was fun, thanks Shane!
Just what I needed to know thanks Shane. Gonna play some slide while my left hand is crippled!

Fantastic, I just did this , before I saw this, but I did GDG
Thanks Shane, My Strat copy now has 3 strings
You just improved a Stratocaster.
Quick fix wonder, i like it!
Great video!! I'm an instant fan.

Seasick Steve is in Open G but I drop that tuning down a half step to Open Gb because it's easier for me to sing.
Thanks !
Careful Shane! I understand that some of those old Harmony gits are worth come $$
Can this work with a 12 string? Cutting down to 6 strings?
i did that with an old electric GDG though
Does the neck get affected? Id love to mod my junker
Nah. In fact it has less tension now
I just knew you were going to grab wire cutters and go at it on the video! Awesome!
"The Shane Lutherie Method"

@@ShaneSpeal Well for a 5 String CBG play some Keith Richards.

DO IT! Because you have nylon strings on that classical, it shouldn't be that much tension to worry about. See if it works. :)
Will the three strings cause the neck to warp?
No, it’s a lot less tension than 6 strings
Do a video how to play "That's All" by Seasick Steve.
Hey Shane, thank you for this - would you recommend raising the nut height from standard?
Can I do this and tune it GDG?
OF COURSE! Make your own rules!!!

Dude I have a kay tulip that looks way similar to the second guitar before it lost a few extra strings haha.
Strings are traditionally counted from the treble side. So remove the 1, 4, and 6 - or high, 4, and low.
thankyou, i thought it looked like that but i was guessing i was just crazy.
Hello from Russia! Really like Seasick Steve and this kind of blues at all. Can you make a lessons about some new songs?)
Илья Лещенко I’m ashamed to say that I haven’t purchased his latest album. I’ll have to get it and learn his new stuff.
G-G-B? Why not G-D-G?
I was wondering the same. I assume GGB is the tuning SeaSick Steve uses. I do not see why you couldn't do open G.
4:16 I mean Gently take those strings off the instrument you're working with cause you never know when you want it to go back the way it was
4:16 Actually gently loosen those Strings & take them off the Guitar instead cause you'll never know when you'll want it back the way it was.
Shane Speal I don't do that anymore, I've updated it back into a 6 String.
Sweeet
Those p-ups sound horrible
crap!!!!
letterli exactly! No pansy-ass smooth blues around here...
