This lovely story describes how a flock of sea-going gulls came to nest on the side of a building in Newcastle. It then follows Kitty from egg to adult describing her adventures along the way.
Kittiwakes are beautiful medium sized gulls with small yellow beaks and dark eyes. In the breeding season they can be found around coastal areas of the UK and in places such as Newcastle (as described in the story) and Scarborough, using window ledges as nesting sites.
Sadly like many other birds Kittiwakes are in decline. They are classed as a Red species on the UK conservation of concern list. This means that they are a part of the highest conservation priority list.
In the winter these delicate looking sea birds spend their time braving the elements and the storms in the Atlantic. They only return to shore for the breeding season.
