  • Motorpsycho live at Rockefeller, Oslo, Norway - March 5th, 2011 -
    10/13: Hallucifuge (Hyperrealistically Speaking...)
Description: Many of my greatest concert experiences have come from watching Motorpsycho on this very stage, so this time around I decided to at least make a document to keep personally. I certainly didn't aim to make a great concert video of the band, as I simply don't have the equipment to do so (my camera has many limitations - including mono sound and no zoom), but having filmed The Black Angels at John Dee the same week (which turned out great), I made an attempt at capturing Motorpsycho as well, and shot the whole gig in 720p HD on my iPhone 4, with only one cut affecting the music (for 2-3 seconds in the middle of "Neanderthal"), and a few slight cuts in-between songs. All banter is intact.
It proved to be a hard task. Holding a small phone as still as possible for over 2 hours, and at the same time being spellbound by the music, doesn't always make for quality viewing, and after I'd skipped through the recording once, I was quite disappointed by my own work. But having given it a day, and re-watched some of the other MP-footage around, I've come to the conclusion that I might have been a bit hard on myself. I've treasured much worse quality videos than this before, and it is what it is; a good, but shaky little document from the gallery, with only a single head in the way of a completely clear view.
The sound could also have been worse for a mobile cam, and is even arguably more balanced than the sound captured downstairs by Wouter and andreutzac. Their two videos are much steadier than mine, though, and should definitely be seen. Great work there. Maybe kaizer shot some film as well? His stuff is always good, and I saw him down the front.
The filming got off to a rough start, when the people sitting in front of me at the gallery decided to stand up in the beginning of "Year Zero (A Damage Report)", so I had to move to another place. This affects the first two minutes or so of that track. The worst two filmed tracks in terms of shakiness are "Mountain" and "Nothing to Say", and if you can live with them without getting seasick, then you will most likely enjoy the rest of the set.
The gig itself got the worst response I've ever seen from an Oslo-crowd, and there have been complaints about the setlist, the sound and Snah's playing. I am in the setlist-camp myself, but as we all know - Motorpsycho-fans are only pleased either right there in the moment, or in hindsight with some historical perspective to go along with it. I guess we'll see in a few years time how this gig will rank in the big picture. At least we've got a complete video to analyse.
    Hope you enjoy it!
