That's why you target the squishy wizard/rogue, they won't know what's coming. Generally, flexing this spell for the first time is best to do when the party has revival recourses on hand, so that they can see how terrifying it is without having to lose a party member instantly. - Jake
My friends Sorceress in my last campaign killed our final boss with that spell after our monk stunned it our barbarian(me) got 2 back to back nat 20s our palladian used a 5th level divine smite and also crit and finally our rogue had like 78 damage on their sneak attack. Like this was the first round and the only spell the bbeg let loose was meteor storm😂 our Cleric just sat back and watched because she knew we had the fight.
It's a very powerful spell if you know how to use it, that's for bloody sure. Also, that DM must have been pretty disappointed in their final fight to end so quick. Might make a video in the future about how to make a worthwhile boss fight that lasts, since I've experienced that problem too. - Jake
@@MagicalTeaParty yeah they were super sad clearly but they tried to make it work narratively by letting the sorceress describe the way the bbeg died and made it not an instant kill more like he had a few final words as he died looking into the sorceress' eyes
"It's 9th level, which is the highest level." Wizard corrects you derisively, "*Ahem* the rest of that statement is "...that *mortals* can achieve." He scowls, "No, cherry picking!" That's something he and the sorcerer can agree on.
You can use the combination of polymorph and then Power Word Kill to take out large creatures. Turn them into a hamster and then zap them with PWK. And no, they should not just change back to their original form because the spell does not do damage - it simply and directly kills it instantly! You just have a dead hamster!
I think the way that it's worded makes it vague enough for DM interpretation. I personally would ignore any temporary hit points, since it isn't something that does damage, but to each their own. - Jake
i would use it only as a last resort if we almost wiped and we been getting good hits in and if I'm last one standing and he looks way more roughed up then at the start I'd cast it.
OK so my DM put that on an enemy and that spell was supercharged by God is there anyway a paladin can bring someone back from that We have a few magical items and 2 healers
A Cleric learns revivify at 5th level, and Paladins learn it at 9th. Additionally, Raise dead can be taken at 9th level for a cleric and 17th level for a Paladin. - Jake
*For the TL;DR crowd:* Don't let your players push you around as a DM, otherwise you'll have someone with Power Word Kill and Mass Suggestion as a single spell combination. I took advantage of a DM once. He was newer, but I'm the type that'll learn someone the harsher way. He kinda let things go and let his players walk all over him and basically become level 5 gods. So, at level 10, I asked if he'd allow for a combination spell to be made, something really cool. I emphasized I'd be really upset if it couldn't be done. I told him the idea in notes. He wanted to say no, but not wanting to upset any player, he would allow it. If I rolled high enough on a couple dice rolls, just basically steps during the process. The cost of failure was death, no resurrection. Just straight character death. I agreed. I succeeded. I combined Mass Suggestion and Power Word Kill. I could kill up to 20 targets as long as they are within 30 feet, with a single word. Nothing else needed, just speak the word. However it would take up a spell slot and I could only cast it once per in game week. Needless to say, I pretty much game overed his entire campaign right then and there. It was his third time DMing, and he needed some help. I really did enjoy his campaign ideas, and I'd later help him DM. Basically help him out growing a spine and not letting people walk all over him. A couple other players have also helped him out, among some other DM's that helped him way more than us players could and now he's a really good DM that makes some challenging, but rewarding adventures.
This spell has to be the absolute worst kind of game design. How is instant death that you can do absolutely nothing about any kind of fun? Its just a giant fuck you to the player you use it on.
Power Word Kill! Insta Killed our Paladin and he was not a happy chappy! How has Power Word Kill affected your game?
I would use it for intimidation, not combat. Imagine being an npc in a bar and some adventurer goes “avadakedavra” and your buddy just drops.
Hahahahaha yes please do this
I made a character that has this spell.
His highest skill is intimidation
That spell still gives me chills, But I have a spell of my own, called divine smite :D
Revenant Ser Albert for the WIN!!!
By the time my enemies have this I forget my players are beefy enough for it not to affect them

Ahhh an encounter to remember 😭
It sure is! We're more prepared for next time now though!!

Was the paladin out of 4th level spell slots? Because that's about the only reason you'd ever use a 5th level slot for divine smite.

Power word kill is fun when you read the monster manual whilst playing :D
Ok, what about temporary HP? Does it count towards the 100HP threshold?

Insta death 101
Cillit BANG! and the dirt is gone
Do circle of death
I'll definitely discuss that in a future episode, it's a pretty neat spell to be fair. Thanks for the suggestion!

Supercharged by God? You'll have to explain that to me.
