I own and enjoy this retro radio/mp3-player. In addition to the wonderful lighted dial, the radio has a somewhat full-bodied sound for its size…a little like a vintage tube radio. Todderbert…How about a video on the top five/ten available to purchase radio/mp3-players and/or portable speakers that sound closest to a tube radio? I really like to listen to old time radio mp3 files with rounded tube-like characteristic sound.
I purchased one of these after watching this video. I saw it before but thought it looked like a toy so passed it up. Glad I saw Todderbert's vid. I'm listening to Orson Welles' 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast on it and it sound very appropriate on this speaker. Oh and I went for the red. It really looks sharp on my desk.
I have the red also. Agree about the volume knob. It seems to go from 0 to 25 or so with the slightest touch. I feel like it'll loosen over time however.

Prunus overall is a quality name in radio & electronics indeed! All bands including SW, FM, & AM offered adequate sensitivity & selectivity as it is good that the Prunus J-160 incorporates a DSP tuner! Overall I most likely would invest in the Prunus J-160!

I like the idea of using this as a player for my old time radio collection on an SD card. However there are too many folders and files (Thousands of episodes). This would be a nightmare to try an scroll though.
Gotta say i do like the red version too. I wish there was a version that would really look like wood. Is it even made of wood like the Prunus R818 or is the case 100% plastic fantastic? Yeah i'd totally love to get one too and mod it. Probably re-spraying it to a more wooden brown color or maybe all black. I do love the soundquality of that mighty speaker. Definitely a lot of sound for that price. And the amber colored dial light really adds to the flair. When i was a kid, this thing would have been the holy grail of radios for me. Incredible what you can get for so little money these days.

Quella rotta l'ho aperta a casa e ha un altoparlante bello prestante anche se ha soli 5W, molto elastico e ha anche una porta reflex che aiuta a scendere di frequenza sui bassi (cosa che tu hai coperto mettendo la radio poggiata sul tavolo con il retro). Per il resto è una radio completa di tutto e si fa sentire anche in grandissime stanze. Ottima la durata della batteria, a 3/4 di volume dura circa 4 ore; a volume basso anche 7/8 ore.
Hej Todderbert thanks for the review the Prunus J-160 looks very nice and also very interesting only have one Prunus radio but from what I have seen and heard, Prunus radio devices seem very good so it's time for another Prunus radio definitely. And very nice retrolook one this radio take care and have a very nice sunday or saturday night in Chicago.

just saw the video neat thing. I recently got a 70's Magnavox radio similar to the 89 one you did awhile ago but its not working. does anybody know where i could find a Manuel/circuit for the thing? PS this is my first vintage radio ever it was an impulsive buy and I hadn't even thought of fixing it.

I like the radio, it has a charm to it. I'm a dial guy, and this radio has a very appealing dial. Just my opinion, but I don't like digital radios. Too cold, functional. I had one of those CC Radio Plus with digital dial, the dial died the presets stopped working, and I really took care of it. Can't beat the look of a lighted dial.
Finally got one of these. Shame that after several years they're still not offering it with 10kHz, and that the volume knob still has most of its range in the first tiny bit of rotation. The Oncheer version (wood grain) is 522-1710 so not sure if it is. I could mod the volume knob, but changing 9 to 10kHz isn't usually easy (have to change out several resistors to specific values).
@@todderbert You ever open up your 160? The 3-band should be a much easier mod than the D-219's 10 or 12. Depends on the chip, whether they grind off the numbers. I may have one of every Xhdata. Probably missing at least one tho.

I was looking at the J-160 and that one came up as a comparison and I really thought it was cool looking because of the built in clock. If you have a review I couldn't find it. Thank you
Shouldnt you place it in upright position? There are holes at the back of the case. If I'm not mistaken, I think its meant to improve the sound. But I could be wrong.
hello @todd, how accessible is it if I want to replace the battery? Is it soldered or have its own compartment? How easy is it to disassemble without damaging the back? Pls update on this, ty!
I still have yet to open mine, expect it to be soldered in, and the back label will need to be cut where the screw holes are. If you can tell, then you may have to peel off the back label. Maybe a hairdryer to loosen it if you are trying to save the sticker.

An Excellent radio. Very high quality, and great reception. Well done Prunus! I would love a clock radio version, with an analogue clock. COOL!
I got myself one in red. Only slight downside is the minimum volume that's set a bit too loud.

When in a rush, I really like this dial. Turn around and see the waves
made in China. the quality is mediocre. The sound is very shrill. Better German or Japanese.

I keep about 30-50 new shows I haven't heard yet on mine, and once they are done, I delete them and add more.

Yeah, I tell Prunus this all the time, but they are only resellers, not the actual manufacturers.
XHDATA on the other hand makes theirs, and listens :)

The Greadio may sound better with its wooden enclosure. I don't own that model, but this is my best guess.
Is that made of bakelite plastic? If so it can be a worthwhile find.

Hey man pick up a cheap tecsun An-200 medium wave loop for enhancing the medium wave reception.
I own three passive loops, the radio is most likely set to 9kHz stepping.

Not yet, they look cool with the analog styled clock. The side light is out of place though.
